OT: Jordan in past video games..

Post#1 » by supermario » Fri Jan 8, 2010 7:34 pm

I haven't posted here in a bit...

I was just thinking back to playing live when I was younger and Jordan never seemed to be in the game. Does anyone know why? He was in it one year I remember but other then that I never remember him in any games...Can someone clarify this for me?

Licensing reasons. In Total NBA 96, arguably the BEST game ever made, he was listed as "roster guard." And he was a white dude. Shaq and Barkley also weren't in that game, listed as Roster Center and Rostr Forward. One of Total NBA 98's key selling points was that it had Shaq in it. They wrote "NOW WITH SHAQ!" on the back cover and everything.

Licensing in older video games was really a shame. I'm glad they at least have that figured out in more recent years.

Yeah I always wondered about that. Same for Barry Bonds in past MLB games.

Yeah, I remember that. Total NBA 98 was also my first ever NBA game.

But to answer EaStSiDeSaProNo's question, I'm pretty sure Live 2000 had Jordan in their 90's roster.

You could unlock MJ in NBA Live 2000 by defeating him in the outdoor court tournament.

I played the SNES version (for the 1st time) a few weeks ago. The graphics were surprisingly good.

It felt good playing video games where the Bulls were elite.

Bulls vs Lakers
Bulls vs Blazers
Bulls vs Suns (not that popular)
NBA Showtime
NBA Live 1996
NBA Live 1997
NBA Live 1998

Wow that brings back memories.. I used to just waive Roster Gaurd in the rosters and create a more realistic, less white Michael Jordan with the same stats and add him to the Bulls.

The PA announcers in that game were hilarious..

It's because of a deal with the player's association. Bonds didn't sign with the MLBPA before 2003 so he had to sign off before any game used his likeness. He never did. I'd assume MJ was the same way.

AKA Jon Dowd in MVP Baseball 2004. Same deal as Jordan; Barry wasn't part of the MLBPA (not sure if there were others?). I wish 2K never bought the rights to make MLB games. MVP Baseball was the best and I can only imagine how awesome MVP would be now.

Oh he ruled faces in Street 2. I might have written off Chaos in the Windy City because I was so disgusted with Shaq Fu, being the 6th grade video game critic I was or thought I was.

What I don't get is why MJ isn't in NBA 2K10... The jumpman logo is all over the game but no sign of MJ.
