Just Curious About Celtics and Canada

Post#1 » by Crowley » Sun Jan 10, 2010 10:16 pm

I know there are a bunch of Lakers fans in Canada, but I'm wondering....

...Are there any Celtics fans over there in Canada? :D

Bandwagon fans exist in every country.
Seriously, their are some for sure, and a lot probably were fans before the Raptors existed. I think there are a few on Realgm as well. You should check the Celtics board.

I'm guessing on the East coast they have some fans.

They probably get a lot of the Boston networks out East so have access to a lot of games.

Just from my own limited experience the non-raptors canadian hardcore fans I've encountered have mostly been Pistons fans though they were mostly from southern ontario so I guess it might be different elsewhere. Celtics & Lakers seems to general be more a bandwagon thing with casual fans that "love Real Madrid, Man Utd, Boston Red Sox, Dallas Cowboys and Kobe Lakers etc".

Isn't "Celtsfansincebirth" from Winnipeg?

Most fans in the Toronto area hate the Celts. Secretly though, most fans here would love that team. They reflect the personality of sports fans here perfectly.

It's a hockey town & sports fans here love toughness.

There are still a lot of Celtics fans in Canada from the Bird days...and all over the world for that matter...

I'm dating myself here but I was a big Celtic fan pre-Raptors, but post-larry bird, or at least during twilight years. I'd say 90-97. While losing Reggie Lewis was one of the worst things that happened to that franchise, the way they handled Dino Radja set them back a big chunk.

A little back story...

The thing is that back before the Raptors showed up in Toronto, the only televised games most Torontonians got to watch were NBA on NBC, sunday afternoon triple headers, which essentially only showed the Jordan-era Bulls or the Magic-era Lakers every weekend... that was until the city's main cable provider expanded it's channels to provide TBS in Atlanta (which showed all the Hawks w/Stacy Augmon, Mookie Blaylock, Kevin Willis and an aging Nique) and they showed WBZ-TV, the local Boston channel, which showed Celtics games. Both the Hawks and Celtics sucked ass during that time and it would be strange for someone in Toronto to be a fan of either team, but it was an opportunity to watch the rest of the league, as there was no way an NBA fan would see the clippers on NBC. And with that you ended up watching every game either on (or both in my case) played, and ultimately got to become a fan. So ya, there are a few older fans that grew up as fan of the celtics and it wasn't because of Larry Legend and the Chief, but because of Todd Day, Alaa Abdelnaby, Rick Fox (the Canuck!) and my man, Dino Radja.

Celtics fan from before there was a Raptors or (Vancouver) Grizzlies fan. Currently living in New Brunswick, although I spent my first 30 years in Ontario. Bird era was when I started. Not a big BB following here on the East coast, but of those a fair group of Celtics fans. Boston is the closest NBA city, but still a pretty good haul, about 10 hour drive.

Bird/Magic holiday games were about all I could count on seeing on the tube when I started - I always loved having the NFL season over because it meant at least a chance of a Sunday afternoon game later in the season.

Thanks for the shoutout.

And yeah, there aren't too many Celts fans in Canada. Superdeluxe, a former mod here, used to reside in Winnipeg. Not sure where dude is now though.

Hi Guys,
Leper-con here. I'm a Celtics fan from vancouver BC. I've been one since around the Bird era. Loved that team. I used to own satellite TV which made it easy to follow the celtics. Now I follow them when they are on national TV NBC, RTV, TSN2, and rogers sports net. I see the games that I can.
cheers to all celtics fans, lets enjoy this team and hopefully Danny has n anti ageing potion, or he is able to add soem youth.

Toronto has a hockey team?

Is that in like the minor leagues or something?

This thread reminds me of the time when the Expos lost their franchise and when that happened, a month later, the Red Sox won the world series. About 90% of Expos fans all joined the Red Sox bandwagon. Ever since then on the Montreal news, they talk about how the Red Sox is Montreal's favourite team.

I don't think it has to do with a bandwagon mentality, at least for me. I was born a week after the 86 title. I started following basketball when I was around 7 or 8. The Raptors hadn't been created yet and I needed a team to follow. I chose the Celtics for two reasons. I loved watching the highlights of Bird's teams and my family is a really proud Irish bunch, so wearing the green clover appealed to me.

Unfortunately for me, I was born at the worst possible time for a Celtics fan. From 1993-2007, I would guess the Celtics had one of the worst winning percentages in the league. All that devotion finally paid off with the 2008 title.
