Re: 2010 Free Agents
I really disagree. I think the more targets the better since it's going to be a non cap free agency class, we'll need to make more targets to go for cuz the less likely the big names will sign with us.
Let's say this is our draft:
(1) Suh
(2) Patrick Robinson
(3) Corey Wooton
and this is our FA signings:
(DT) Elvis Dumervil
(DE) Johnny Jolly
(LT) Donald Penn
(CB) Dunta Robinson
We would become a very legit defense and have our young anchor LT to build the OLine around.
I could hold off on getting Washington and sticking with Aaron Brown and Maurice Morris for another year and have a praise that we can draft Mark Ingram Jr. in the 2011 draft. I'm not sold on Kevin Smith being our franchise back especially with this knee problem now.
In 2011 We would have one of the best young teams in the NFL if we can solidify our OLine.
Matt Stafford
Mark Ingram
Calvin Johnson
Donald Penn
Brandon Pettigrew
Ndamagungh Suh
Elvis Dumervil
Corey Wooton
Johnny Jolly
Patrick Robinson
Louis Delmas
Dunta Robinson
That is an amazing group of young guys (Not even mentioning our other 2011 draft picks)

Re: 2010 Free Agents
If we sign a couple DE's via free agency, there is no need to also draft Wooten (Northwestern) - Dumervil is a DE, not a DT.

You're right. For some reason, I thought he was a DT until I remembered he's ACTUALLY a LB moved to DE.

Corey Wooton is so good though lol He's that hidden gym type guy.
What about Marvin Austin? He's a DT that could slip to the 3rd round.

I know I'm prolly gonna get hated on for this one, but why not give a contract to Terrell Owens? If there is anyone that could take pressure off of Calvin, it's him. I think he would respect Calvin's ability to play football.

Re: 2010 Free Agents
You think Owens would last a week as some teams #2 WR??
In his mind, he needs to go somewhere to be the #1 guy....

Idk.. just a thought. I see him going to Carolina tbh. Steve Smith just said a couple weeks ago that he hates being the number one WR.

Re: 2010 Free Agents
Smith hates being double/triple teamed.....
Smith still wants to be a #1 guy, just wants Carolina to get him a legit #2 to help him out.

Re: 2010 Free Agents
His exact words were "I'm sick of being the number one wide receiver on this team". It's clear he don't like getting doubled and tripled, but I think that he wants another pro bowl WR on the other side of him.

TO drops everything in sight and is a diva who is no longer a superstar, not even a star. And he isnt exactly a spring chicken either.
I wouldnt take TO on for free, and im not kidding

Re: 2010 Free Agents
I talked to Bartender about this just a couple days ago, but I think players with bad attitudes and questionable decision making are not what this team needs right now. Mayhew/Schwartz have gone out of their way to get rid of the bad apples and bring in young talent with good heads on their shoulders who's only concern is winning. Getting guys like TO or Pacman Jones goes against that trend they are putting in place.
It's also why I'm not high on drafting guys like Carlos Dunlap. We passed on Rey Maualuga twice in the draft last year for the same reasons. We ended up with Pettigrew and Delmas instead. And Mayhew was right to pass over him for those players.

The Lions haven't rules out re-signing Culpepper or Stanton for next season. What a **** load of ****.

Re: 2010 Free Agents
Actually, in reading his quotes, it sounds more like he's expecting Stanton back, and is kind of luke warm about Daunte....
If I had to guess based off his quotes, Stanton comes back and Culpepper does not.

Re: 2010 Free Agents
Well that was a complete 180 from a few days ago. I hope it's true and Daunte isn't brought back. I think Mayhews mind was made up when he had to talk to him on Thanksgiving about his attitude problems.
I really wouldn't mind Drew being re-signed as a backup, but not on a big or long contract.

Re: 2010 Free Agents
Eh, if Daunte comes back, that means he knows his career is over and he like Stafford and wants to help develop him. That's my opinion. If Daunte can understand and accept the fact that he's not the starter and not the better QB in Detroit and wants to commit to the development of Stafford, I say what the hell... sign him. He'd be one of the better back ups in the league.

Re: 2010 Free Agents
No Daunte thinks he's still a starter in the league and wants to be someones #1 guy. He doesn't want to ride the pine. He doesn't want to play behind some kid. He's delusional at this point. Time to just cut him lose.

Martin Mayhew isn't going to just grab a bunch of guys on small contracts. He's going to go after a handful of quality players that can upgrade our talent right away. Price will be key, but he's looking for quality over quantity.
This is good news, especially considering that some people have stated that the Lions will only look to fill as many holes as cheaply as possible.
The Lions know the key to their future will come through the draft, but their first chance to acquire better players will start with free agency, tentatively scheduled to begin March 5.
General manager Martin Mayhew said this year's approach will be different than last year's. Instead of a scattershot method of bringing in the 15 free agents who made at least $1 million to plug holes, Mayhew expects to seek about five or six free agents to supplement key needs.
