Is Gomes the Wolf most likely to be traded at the deadline?

Post#1 » by Krapinsky » Fri Jan 15, 2010 4:07 am

I think so.

I think buying out Gomes is a dumb idea -- a waste of $2.75 million -- to buy out a decent player on a fair contract. I don't see how this is even a realistic possibility.

So what do people want to do? Do we want to keep Gomes as a player or as a future trade asset (at the expense of cap space)?

Or do we want to trade him for an expiring contract and try to pick up a late first?

Some possibilities --

Lakers - Morrison + 1st for Gomes + Pecherov?

Boston - Scalabrine + Walker + 1st for Gomes?

Portland - Outlaw + 1st for Gomes?

Interesting point. I guess the question is would a late first get us a player with better upside? I see someone like Brackens being a taller Gomes, who might be. So I'm 50/50. If it was someone like Outlaw who I view as a very good fit, then yes I would.

I'm more in the camp that signing a big FA is unlikely and would rather use Blount, Cardinal, etc. to acquire that and if we need to move Gomes based on the return fine.

I have always kind of disliked Gomes. Far too blah of a game for me. I want someone who jumps out of the gym, not a wanna-be combo forward who can't rebound. Let's take a risk and get some unknown commodity SG.

or something like:
NYK Trade:
Gillinari
Jeffries

Minny Trade:
Cardinal
Gomes

there is no possible chance of that trade happening. ever.

but. i think gomes will stick around. hes a decent rotation player. for the right price, id like to see him resigned. he can fit into a rotation, does everything solid, not particularly good at one thing, good lockerroom guy, good community guy.... hes just a guy with no real negatives, but hes probably not best suited as a starter on a playoff team... sadly.

i see him sticking around at least till the end of the season, and being re-signed @ a cheap price.. i just dont see an overwhelming desire for him anywhere.

I think he probably is. I've always liked him as a person and he knows how to play the game but he's far too inconsistent and shouldn't be a starter in this league. That being said if we can some value for him that being expiring contracts and/or a pick I'd be for it.

Do you really think we could get expirings and a 1st for Gomes?

I agree with JR Rider....while I would LOVE for that trade to happen (I think Gallinari would fit well in our offense), there is no way the Knicks would let him go that easily. I think we'd probably have to trade a guy like Kevin or Jonny to get Danilo.

Well those firsts are in the mid to late 20's and all those teams could use a player like Gomes off the bench. Boston and LA can't use their mid-level next year, so this allows them to add a decent role player on a cap friendly contract.

I like Gomes. Like JR said, "a guy with no real negatives." However, I only want to see him get real minutes as our stretch 4 off the bench. That being said, I'd rather have a taller/longer and more athletic stretch 4. I guess since I'm not of the "sign a high priced FA this summer" committee, I don't want to trade him for a late first and an expiring. I don't mind using him as part of a bigger deal.

flynn-sessions
turner-ellington
brewer
love-gomes
jefferson-pekovic-hollins

That lineup already looks a lot better than this year. We might have two more 1sts and sign a FA or two. Alright, I admit I have no idea what to do with Gomes. I hope Kahn does.

Late 1sts - yes. Remember for a win-now team, this pick turns into a player that they'll pay double over the lux, and won't get to play or develop because they want to win every game. Moreover, he uses up a roster spot that could go to vet min player that can actually help them.

Gomes has shown a flexible array of skills, and the ability to play as a starter or bench player, and an ability to accept either role and be a good teammate.

Wouldn't Gomes be a player they have to pay double over the lux? And at a higher salary than a late 1st rounder would receive? If the team were really so concerned about their lux situation, wouldn't they just let their expiring expire, sell their pick, then sign that vet min player that could actually help them?

I don't see Gomes as the kind of player that a contender would see as a good enough addition that they'd give up expirings and a 1st for him. If Kahn can get that, then more power to him. It isn't that hard to find players like Gomes. Of the teams Dr. Krapinsky named, the only one that doesn't already have a similar player on their roster is Boston. I guess Beantown's a possible destination when you combine that with how highly Ainge talked of Gomes after the trade. They're the only team I could see going for this type of proposal.
