"I was sitting in church and my dad and Haiti popped into my head," Olden wondered aloud. "It was almost like I had a vision." Then everything went to a blur for Olden, just as it did for the rest of an estimated 850,000 Haitian immigrants in the United States, and more scattered elsewhere throughout the world, as word and eventually images of the devastation of their homeland spread. He called his father from his cell phone and got nothing. He sent his father a text and received no response. Over and over again he did both only to get the same agonizing and gut-wrenching result.Olden said he retreated to his bedroom and turned on the television. There he remained flipping the channels from one all-news network to another, from one news account to the next, just hoping to catch of glimpse of the man he called dad. He saw images of the Parliament turned to rubble. The tax office collapsed. Schools fallen. The main hospital in ruin. Church steeples toppled. He heard Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive say there were probably over 100,000 people dead. "I didn't know what to do," Olden said. "I was just stuck there, waiting to hear."

Ex-Piston Olden Polynice speaking to FanHouse's Kevin Blackistone about his father and other loved ones in his native country of Haiti. By now you've probably discovered many ways to help the disaster relief efforts, but SB Nation has compiled a few resources here.

Ticket return may be good for Jan. 22
It’s an extremely rough target, but coach Doc Rivers believes Kevin Garnett may return for a Jan. 22 home game against Portland

The Celtics [team stats] visit the Pistons two nights earlier in Auburn Hills, Mich. “We would have a practice day the day before (Jan. 22),” Rivers said prior to last night’s 96-83 loss to the Bulls. “I’m just glad that he’s running right now. We’ll have a couple of practices over the next week where he can get on the floor and work with us. “We’ll play him when he’s ready, and that’s it. But there’s an outside chance that Portland could be the return game for him."

Garnett, who’s recovering from a hyperextended right knee, was cleared earlier this week to resume workouts. He traveled with the team to Wednesday’s win at New Jersey.

The target for the return of Rasheed Wallace (sore left foot) remains on track, with Monday’s game against Dallas at the Garden a strong possibility

Portland center Greg Oden is targeting a return to action this season.
“I’m actually hoping, and saying my prayers, that I can come back before the end of this season,” says Oden, who underwent surgery on Dec. 7 to repair a fractured left patella.

What do the Blazers’ medical experts, including team doctor Don Roberts and trainer Jay Jensen, have to say about that? “They haven’t dismissed the idea,” Oden says.

General Manager Kevin Pritchard confirms Oden’s version. “It’s possible, but you know, we’ll play this by ear, and we’ll be very cautious,” Pritchard says. “We’re not going to push. We’ll let it happen naturally and follow what the doctor orders.”

Misfiring Pistons: Dumars might trades to fix team
Joe Dumars broke up the Detroit Pistons when he was convinced they were no longer an Eastern Conference power. Now that Detroit's record is among the worst in the league, the team's president of basketball operations sounds like he's ready to make more moves over the next month. ``We will not be averse to being active before the trading deadline,'' Dumars said Thursday in an interview with The Associated Press. ``But we're definitely not going to be active just to be active. At this stage, it has to make sense for us going forward. We're not looking for a short-term fix.'' One player could not cure all the Pistons' problems, even if he was a desperately needed point guard or a low-post scorer. ``We are not a finished product,'' Dumars said. ``We have some holes to fill and we will go about doing that.'' Detroit was expected to endure a rebuilding season after dealing Chauncey Billups last season, then losing Rasheed Wallace and Antonio McDyess in free agency during the summer. Few predicted the Pistons would be this bad. Detroit (12-25) has lost 13 of 14 and barely avoided a franchise-record losing streak earlier this week. Adding to the franchise's woes, it usually has thousands of empty seats for home games and those in the house for an uninspired loss last week did as much jeering as cheering. ``I would boo, too, the way we played,'' forward Charlie Villanueva said. ``I don't blame them.''

Not long ago, the Pistons' arena was regularly filled as the team advanced to the conference finals six straight years - the league's longest streak since the Los Angeles Lakers' run in the 1980s - and won the NBA title in 2004. Now, it takes a visit from Kobe Bryant to have a true sellout. The Pistons are announcing an average crowd of 18,523 this season - 3,000 fewer than last season - after boasting a sellout streak over four straight seasons. Motor City fans haven't been this disinterested in their NBA team since the Pistons averaged 14,813 fans during the 2000-01 season, back when Dumars was in his first season in charge after starring for the team in the Bad Boys era.``It's been a major challenge to get people to come out to watch our team in transition in this economy,'' Pistons CEO Tom Wilson said. ``People are looking for bargains, like our four-for-$44 promotion. Even if we get 15,000 warm bodies in the building, they're not paying what they did a couple years ago because the price they're willing to pay is reflective of our team being down.''The Pistons were upbeat during Thursday's practice, two days after winning at Washington and snapping their losing streak at 13 - one away from the franchise record. ``It's amazing what winning can do,'' Villanueva said. ``You could tell by the vibe with everybody that the pressure is off.''

Not quite. The Pistons are so focused on getting better for the future that they might part ways with standouts from the past, 31-year-old Richard Hamilton and 29-year-old Tayshaun Prince, if they can move either or both past-their-prime players. Hamilton insisted he will not follow the rumor mill before the Feb. 18 trade deadline and wonder if the eighth season in Detroit will be his last. ``The question I ask myself is, `Do I think we can win here?' and my answer is, `Yes,''' Hamilton said.``It's just been tough with all of the injuries. Once we get everyone on the floor playing together to find a rhythm, we'll be fine.'' The good news for the Pistons is that there are a lot of bad teams in the East. Detroit was just 4 1/2 games out of the final playoff spot on Thursday and eight of its last nine games this month are at home. ``Absolutely, this is definitely a chance for us to make a push,'' Villanueva said. The affable forward did not take that cue from first-year coach John Kuester. ``I'm just concerned with the next game,'' said Kuester, referring to Friday's home game against New Orleans. Even if Detroit fails to make the playoffs for the first time since 2001, don't expect one of Dumars' changes to involve Kuester after firing Michael Curry following only one season. ``I think John has done a good job, given all the adjustments he's had to make with an unprecedented amount of injuries,'' Dumars said. ``He's incorporated rookies and free agents in what we knew was going to be a transition year. ``We were so easily identifiable for so long, but that only after we built our core up at the beginning of the great run we just finished. When you're building, it's hard to have an identity.''

Doc’s encouraging report on Sheed, KG
Celtics coach Doc Rivers said he is ‘hopeful’ that Rasheed Wallace can return from a sore left forefoot next Monday when the team hosts Dallas at TD Garden. Entering Thursday’s game with Chicago, Wallace had missed the last two games and was able to work out before the game

Meanwhile, Rivers said there’s an ‘outside chance’ Kevin Garnett could return on Jan. 22 against Portland. Garnett has been out since Dec. 22 with a hyperextended right knee.

Rivers reiterated that guard Marquis Daniels won’t be ready until after the All-Star break following surgery on his left thumb. Glen Davis played Thursday night with a minor injury of his own as he banged his thumb in Wednesday’s blowout win over New Jersey. The thumb was swollen following the game but he treated it and was cleared to play in the game against the Bulls

Pistons Plan To be Active: Pistons' president Joe Dumars told reporters yesterday that while his club is mired in another disappointing season at 12-25, he would be active in looking for ways to improve his team at the trade deadline. The obvious players to move would be the remaining championship holderovers Tayshaun Prince - who has $5.46 million remaining on his $10.3 million contract this season with $11.14 million owed next season - and Richard Hamilton, who has roughly $6.15 remaining on his $11.62 million contract this year with three more seasons at $12.65 million each. Prince is clearly the easiest of the contracts to move, however he's played in just nine games this season after missing more than 26 games due to a ruptured disc in his back, and is now battling a sore left knee that's cost him the last two games.

It's hard to imagine a team gives up any quality assets for a player coming off a major back injury with a bad knee. Hamilton too has been battling injuries this season. He is finally back in the lineup and playing well, but given his recent injuries and contract duration the Pistons may not find a taker on Hamilton without some serious sweetener. There was talk that the Utah Jazz might have interest in a deal involving Carlos Boozer landing in Detroit, but they would want rookie Austin Daye included in any transaction and that seems to be a deal killer for Detroit.

Surprise rookie Jonas Jerebko is a name some teams have mentioned, but his $400,000 minimum salary wouldn't return nearly as much as he brings to the table. The Pistons have very few ending contracts: Kwame Brown's $4 million deal and Ben Wallace's $1.3 million veteran's minimum deal. Jason Maxiell might be a tradable asset, but he is owed $5 million per season over the next three, which makes him a cap killer for teams looking at free agency next summer. So while the Pistons have pledged to be active as the February 18th deadline approaches, they may not have anything they can or would want to trade despite how badly the season has gone.

LAKERS/CLIPPERS NOTEBOOK: Gasol says he will play tonight
Power forward/center Pau Gasol said he intends to play tonight against the Clippers, returning to the Lakers' starting lineup after sitting out for six consecutive games because of a strained left hamstring. "That's my plan," he said Thursday afternoon. "I'm ready to play."

Gasol went through a full practice with some of his teammates and reported no problems with his hamstring. He was injured before the Lakers' 35-point rout of the Dallas Mavericks on Jan. 3 and played only 7 minutes, 12 seconds.

He then sat out the next six games, including the Lakers' five-point win over the Mavericks on Wednesday in Dallas. The Lakers went 3-3 while he was sidelined. They were 8-3 while he was out because of a strained right hamstring to start the season. "No issues, no pain," he said. "I trust that I can be out there playing at my best right now without any danger (of a setback). There's no concern. I'mready to go out there to have some fun with my teammates. "I feel confident I can be out there with no risk, no danger."

Brandon in :
Hey I am a big magic fan, but this year they seem like a team full of whiners. Besides Dwight Howard and Matt Barnes all their players care about is shooting the basketball. Could you see the magic trading for more of a team player(Tayshaun Prince)

Anthony Macri:
Good question regarding the Magic. It may be something of a rut, but at the same time, they are ultra-competitive in terms of their record (though going through a little downturn right now). It's a long season - I wouldn't go crazy looking for a trade, but if they can add a guy like Tayshaun without disrupting their core, they would be silly not to (any team would be silly not to).

Virgil in :
Just curious on your thoughts on this one, given the first statement about the Magic and Tayshaun. Bass, Gortat, Pietrus for Prince (the 25% allowed difference in trade should cover Gortat's BYC). Pistons get front court help and go young.

Anthony Macri:
Sounds good at first blush. Not sure the Pistons would go for it, but I think it could work for the Magic.

Calderon in Toronto in Toronto:
I clearly have lost my spot in toronto - i will be traded and soon i bet - who are my takers (sacramento?, detroit?)

Chris Perkins:
Jose,
I hope you get traded. Sacramento would be nice. The Lakers would be ideal, but that won't happen.

Garnett, Wallace to Return Soon?
Finally, there could be a return date for Kevin Garnett. After two weeks of vagueness, Celtics coach Doc Rivers said last night that Garnett is targeted to play Jan. 22 against Portland. “There is an outside chance that that would be the return date,’’ Rivers said. “I am just glad that he’s running. “He has no pain. It’s good. We’ll have a couple of practices next week where he can get on the floor and practice with us, so that would be good, too. We’re going to play him when he’s ready.’’

Garnett has not played since a Dec. 28 loss to Golden State. In that game he was kicked in his surgically repaired right knee, causing a hyperextension. Team officials decided to shut Garnett down instead of risking further injury, however the All-Star forward has begun running and participating in light basketball activities. The Celtics are off until Monday’s home game with Dallas, which is followed by a game Wednesday in Detroit. If Garnett does return against the Trail Blazers, he will have missed 10 games and 24 days.

Rivers said he is targeting Monday as a return date for (Rasheed) Wallace, who has missed three games. “It was about five or six minutes left in the fourth quarter [of the Toronto game],’’ Wallace said. “It got real sore to where I still had to play on it, but after the game ice it down. “I am going to take a couple of days off, let the swelling go down. It comes with age. It’s a normal basketball injury, nothing out of the ordinary, joints flaring up, that’s all. Ain’t nothing real serious.’’

Deron Williams Injures Wrist vs. Cavs
Utah Jazz point guard Deron Williams injured his wrist during his team's 97-96 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday.

Williams picked up the injury after getting tangled up with a Cleveland player and had to leave the game with 11:23 remaining.

Rookie Sundiata Gaines, playing in just his fifth NBA game after signing a 10-day contract with the team, made a three-pointer as time expired to win the game.

Griffin Handles Knee Surgery With Class
With little emotion or inflection in his voice, Blake Griffin said the dreaded thought already had been in his head. One day after the Clippers said their rookie power forward would need knee surgery that would delay his NBA debut until next season, Griffin said Thursday that the decision was "the best choice" for his nascent career. "This has been a possibility in the back of my mind that it might have to happen, so it made it a little bit easier to process," he said.

In a nine-minute news conference at the Clippers' training facility in Playa Vista, Griffin said he was "obviously disappointed" but that "it's better to take care of it now and not have to deal with it in the future."

The NBA's No. 1 draft pick last June suffered a stress fracture in his left kneecap during the Clippers' final preseason game Oct. 23. He had hoped weeks of rehabilitation would fix the knee, enabling him to join the team in the second half of the season and provide an added lift to the Clippers' quest for the playoffs.

Pau Gasol Plans to Return Against Clippers
Pau Gasol already had practiced with the Lakers on Thursday, going hard with his teammates in a contact session in an attempt to test his strained left hamstring that kept him out of the last six games.

Then his teammates left, but Gasol stayed and took shots from the baseline, from the pinch-post and from the free-throw line. When he was done, Gasol said he plans to play tonight against the Clippers in the Lakers' home game at Staples Center.

Gasol's workout at the Lakers' practice facility Thursday and his workouts before games in San Antonio on Tuesday and in Dallas on Wednesday left him pain-free. "Obviously after a little tear, you feel scar tissue that is built there," Gasol said. "But other than that, there's no pain and I trust that I can be out there playing at my best right now without any danger."
