Joe Johnson This Summer?

Post#1 » by ARB729 » Sat Jan 16, 2010 1:51 am

Not sure if this has been brought up on here before, but I feel like JJ is getting severely underrated in terms of the players available this summer. Rayray seems to be a shell of himself this year, and I don't think resigning him for big money is anywhere close to ideal. JJ would be a nice compliment, and may extend the window of a title shot a few years.

Fine, how do the Celtics get him?

Celtics don't have the cap space even if they don't resign Ray Allen.

i'll admit i don't know every in and out of the basketball cba as i do baseball, but ray comes off the books, and we have options on walker and giddens, which puts our total down to about 60 mill for next year .. if it's 83 this year you believe that joe will want 23 a year? someone who knows more can correct me if i'm wrong, but i think a 23/year contract for him would be excessive and that probably wouldn't be his max anyways

The salary cap is probably going to be around $54 million. The luxury tax will be somewhere around $65 million. The Celtics have to pay a dollar for dollar tax on everything over $65 million. If the Celtics wanted to offer Joe Johnson say $12 million a year then they would have to get their salaries down to $42 million (54-12=$42 million). The Celtics already have $63 million in salaries next year without resigning Ray Allen.

i did forget that the cap was going down next summer, but i think the owners have shown that they are willing to pony up a little for a winning team .. whatever just a thought i didn't mean for it to get into a salary cap discussion

Good thought just not realistically possible.

We should just see if we can swap Ray Allen and Garnett for Joe Johnson, Josh Smith, and Al Horford... 8-)

That's a better idea then the one that Azurewhatever came up with. He wanted to trade the 2nd best defensive center in the league, Ray and picks for Joe Johnson who is a free agent at a dime a dozen position and a backup center.

Probably won't go down, but the salary cap for this year was around 59 million. It won't go much beyond 60 next year. The Celtics have six players under contract for next year (including Pierce's player option) which total over 63 million. So the Celtics will be well over the cap and still need to sign multiple players to even field a team. They cannot sign anybody accept players to the Midlevel exception and vet min contracts (having used the bi-annual last summer).

Can everyone please understand the CBA before you make suggestions like this? We'd have to make a move, seeing as we're stuck with $63M in payroll next year and that's definitely not going to be under the cap.

Just losing Allen doesn't mean we can sign someone else for equivalent value. Unless you're under the cap, all that you're given to sign free agents with is the MLE of around $5-6M. Johnson will command a near max deal, so we'd have to be that much under the cap to sign him.

It would have to be a sign and trade to work. Ray going to ALT would make the most sense but someone else would have to go too because Ray wont be getting near as much as JJ. The problem is why on earth would the Hawks want to help us get better when they are comming up on us fast.

JJ is going to be a rich man this summer, when most of the bigger name FAs stay put. I could see him getting the max in NY when the Knicks strike out on everyone else.

He's already shown that he'll follow the money to a worse team, when he went from Phoenix to ATL.

The salary cap is NOT a soft cap which means you CANT pay someone more then your cap space unless it is an MLE deal. We have ZERO cap space this summer.
Next year's payroll:
KG - 18 Mill
Pierce - 21 Mill
Rondo - 9 Mill
Perk - 5 Mill
Sheed - 6 Mill
Baby - 2 Mill
Sum - 61 Mill which is above the salary cap (52-55 Mill)

So the answer is no. JoJo isnt coming. It is not possible...
