Atlanta is just a bad trade partner for us. Ray is a valuable trade asset to us, but a team that would want him would have to want him for the following reason: They'd want to be willing to trade a younger or better player on a slightly longer contract (no more than two years longer, when KG's contract expires) for the flexibility to have some more cap space in 2010 but they'll also want to be competing now and have the option to re-sign Ray next year to compete then as well.
That's how you maximize Ray's trade value and it's unlikely we move him because we're one of the few teams that that applies to (though we gain nothing if we let him expire). Maybe moving him to Phoenix would be appealing for someone like J Rich, but then it's debatable on who's the better player and if it's worth it to us now. We get six years younger and Phoenix gets to continue competing now while gaining some flexibility in an important 2010 offseason for them (potential loss of Amare).
Would you do Ray Allen and Perkins for Joe Johnson and Zaza?

Take a pill buddy. I just think that the salary cap doesn't matter if you want to build a title team.
Maybe we could trade Cfan79 to the Minny board for Gomes? The deal breaker would be if they tried to throw in Wolves2011 in the deal.

You know you love me Hem. Just admit it, you've been flirting with me for years.

cfan, do you know what the salary cap is?
What other posters have been saying is simply this: After this season, it's impossible for Boston to sign Joe Johnson. No matter if you care about championships or something else, it's impossible. Because Boston will NOT be under to cap to sign a player of Johnson's quality. Even though Allen's contract and others come off the book. Boston can only sign somebody with the MLE at most, and that's not something Johnson would accept.

O.K. I believe you guys. I just figured the owners didn't mind spending the extra money. I'm sure other vets like Joe Smith would sign for cheap to fill out the roster.

That's the thing though, no matter how much they are willing to spend, they can't spend more than the NBA allows

Toronto gets:
Ray Allen (an expiring)
Glen Big Baby Davis (A big bruiser to replace Bosh)
So Toronto almost breaks even by losing Bosh, who might not be able to resign, in exchange for Ray, who they have no reason to re-sign...
and for the privilege of that, they dump their recent lottery pick for Big Baby?

It's not that they wouldn't want to spend the extra money, it's that they aren't allowed to ...because of the salary cap...it's only been like that for 20 years or more...
