Alexander's lift-off date could be Monday
Second-year forward Joe Alexander believes he is ready to play.

He has accompanied the Bucks on their western road swing and practiced regularly while awaiting a return to the active roster.

Bucks coach Scott Skiles hinted that time could come on Monday when the Bucks conclude their six-game trip in Houston. "He had a workout (Friday morning)," Skiles said. "So far nothing has happened. More than likely we'll get through (Saturday), work him again on Sunday, and then he will have had three, four or five days of contact. "If he gets through that OK, it will be about time then."

Weary Celtics are running on empty
Rivers said Garnett’s return is based on him being able to participate in practice. The Celtics will train today and tomorrow, and will likely have a session the day after the Dallas game. Garnett could prepare for the Portland game if the Celtics practice after visiting Detroit Wednesday night. If not, a more likely return could be Jan. 25 against the Clippers.

Bucks to sign Jerry Stackhouse
Jerry Stackhouse is 35 years old and hasn’t brought much to an NBA court over the last few seasons, but he’ll reportedly get a shot at helping the Milwaukee Bucks, who will be without Michael Redd for the rest of the season.

ESPN.com reports: The Milwaukee Bucks will sign veteran guard Jerry Stackhouse to a contract for the rest of the season, according to NBA front-office sources. Sources told ESPN.com that Stackhouse is expected to formally sign with the Bucks on Monday or possibly Tuesday after the Martin Luther King holiday. The former All-Star guard has been looking for a new team since the summer and was targeted by the Bucks — who began play Sunday two games out of the final playoff spot in the East — after Michael Redd suffered a season-ending knee injury last Sunday in Los Angeles against the Lakers.

Stack averaged 12.0 points per game for the Dallas Mavericks in 2006-07, 10.7 ppg on 40.5% shooting (and just 32.6% threes) in 2007-08, and last season played just 10 games for just 4.2 ppg on 26.7% shooting.

Warriors sign Anthony Tolliver to 10-day contract
The Golden State Warriors have signed forward Anthony Tolliver to a 10-day contract, the team announced today. Tolliver, 24, is a call-up from the NBA Development League’s Idaho Stampede, where he has appeared in 14 games this season, averaging 21.4 points, 11.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.29 steals and 1.21 blocks in 35.0 minutes per contest. Amongst D-League statistical leaders, he currently ranks eighth in scoring and third in rebounding. A 6-9, 240-pound forward, Tolliver was called-up earlier this season by the Portland Trail Blazers on December 17 and appeared briefly in two games before being waived on December 29.

Last season, Tolliver split time between the D-League and the San Antonio Spurs, for whom he played 19 games and averaged 2.7 points and 2.2 rebounds in 10.9 minutes per contest. A graduate of Creighton University, Tolliver went undrafted in the 2007 NBA Draft and began his professional career in 2007-08 with the D-League’s Iowa Energy.

Golden State’s roster now stands at 17 players. The Warriors are able to add Tolliver to the roster under the NBA’s hardship rules, which allow a team the ability to sign an additional player if that team already has 15 players on its Active and Inactive Lists and has four-or-more players unable to perform playing services due to injury or illness for an extended period of time. Golden State currently has two additional players on its roster under the NBA’s hardship rules, as the team has no fewer than five players out with injury for an extended period. Tolliver will wear uniform #44.

McDyess Day-to-Day With Pinched Nerve
The Spurs will face Memphis tonight short one big man, but it's not the one everybody expected.Tim Duncan is in. Antonio McDyess is out.

McDyess suffered a pinched nerve in his neck during Friday's loss at Charlotte. He will be listed as day-to-day after tonight's game.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich had originally planned to rest Duncan on the second night of the back-to-back. After a spirited pre-game workout, Duncan convinced Popovich to let him play.

Wallace Foresees Return Monday vs. Mavs
Rasheed Wallace was feeling well enough yesterday to declare himself ready to return to action. And his Celtics teammates were in an upbeat mood as coach Doc Rivers conducted a lighthearted practice, featuring a dunk contest (won by J.R. Giddens) and shooting contests (won by Eddie House).

Wallace plans to play against the Dallas Mavericks tomorrow after missing three games with a sprained foot.

“Just a little sprain,’’ Wallace said. “How I did it, I haven’t the slightest idea. I was playing on it for about two weeks, before, finally, the last few minutes in that Toronto game [last Sunday] sort of did it.’’

Joe Alexander May Get the Nod on Monday
Second-year forward Joe Alexander believes he is ready to play. He has accompanied the Bucks on their western road swing and practiced regularly while awaiting a return to the active roster.

Bucks coach Scott Skiles hinted that time could come on Monday when the Bucks conclude their six-game trip in Houston. "He had a workout (Friday morning)," Skiles said. "So far nothing has happened. The Bucks have taken a cautious approach with Alexander, who suffered a severe right hamstring strain in late September and aggravated the injury in October. He has not played yet this season and saw limited action in 59 games as a rookie.

Source: Stackhouse Lands in Milwaukee
The Milwaukee Bucks will sign veteran guard Jerry Stackhouse to a contract for the rest of the season, according to NBA front-office sources. Sources told ESPN.com that Stackhouse is expected to formally sign with the Bucks on Monday or possibly Tuesday after the Martin Luther King holiday.

The former All-Star guard has been looking for a new team since the summer and was targeted by the Bucks -- who began play Sunday two games out of the final playoff spot in the East -- after Michael Redd suffered a season-ending knee injury last Sunday in Los Angeles against the Lakers. Foot and knee problems limited Stackhouse to just 10 games last season with Dallas, but the 35-year-old has insisted for months that he is healthy and ready to return to the league.

After an audition for the New York Knicks in August, Stackhouse rejected an invitation to Houston Rockets training camp in October to replace the injured Rashad McCants when the Rockets told Stackhouse he'd have to win a roster spot in camp to stick.

Rivers hoping Pierce is fine
Boston Celtics captain Paul Pierce, still recovering from two procedures last month for a right knee infection, got tangled with teammate Shelden Williams at the end of Sunday's practice session and limped off the court in pain.

Pierce returned with ice on the knee at the end of practice, and coach Doc Rivers held out hope that it was nothing serious. "I hope [he's OK], he got kneed [by Williams] in the exact same spot [as the procedures]," said Rivers. "It's just amazing the luck right now with little things like that. That's why he was so upset. He said, 'Man, it's right on the spot.' It's starting to feel better, so I'm hoping he's fine."

Pierce missed five games at the end of December when he twice had his infected knee drained. The knee first swelled up after a 103-94 win over Indiana on Dec. 22. Pierce returned Jan. 6 against Miami. Williams was no worse for wear and didn't think the collision was that serious. "We got tangled up, that's it, nothing big," said Williams. "[Pierce] went out on a screen, I showed, we got tangled up in our legs. It hit more of my shin, so I'm not sure if it hit his knee or what."

Morrow may miss 2-4 weeks
Warriors guard Anthony Morrow could miss two to four weeks with a sprained MCL in his right knee, but the team said the results of Saturday's MRI exam won't be made available until today.

Morrow went down in the opening two minutes of Friday's 113-104 loss to Milwaukee when Andrew Bogut bowled over Corey Maggette and knocked him into Morrow's right leg. When Maggette's head smacked Morrow's lower leg, Morrow's foot was planted and his knee buckled from the outside.

The second-year player rode a stationary bike for about 10 minutes before returning for a painful 2:19 in the second quarter. Morrow said he couldn't go in the second half because his knee was sore and swollen.

Pistons-Knicks Preview
It's hard to believe the Detroit Pistons were mired in a 13-game losing streak less than a week ago the way they've played in their last three contests. The Pistons will try to win their fourth straight and complete a home-and-home sweep of the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden on Monday. Detroit (14-25) ended its lengthy skid with a 99-90 win at Washington on Tuesday before returning home to beat New Orleans and New York (16-24). The Pistons have led at halftime in all three wins, building a 51-37 advantage in Saturday's 94-90 victory over the Knicks. "We're playing harder, playing as a team, sharing the ball," Detroit guard Rodney Stuckey said. "That's pretty much it. I think that if we came out and share the ball, and help each other on defense we give ourselves a chance to win a basketball game."

Stuckey scored 20 points and Charlie Villanueva 19 against New York. Stuckey needed treatment for flulike symptoms and dehydration after he scored eight points in overtime in Friday's win over the Hornets, spending a long night in the hospital. "That young man showed some guts tonight," guard Chucky Atkins said. "He gave us 41 minutes after he was at the hospital at 3 a.m." New York cut a 17-point deficit entering the fourth quarter down to two, but was unable to complete the comeback in its fourth loss in five games. "We had a lack of energy, a lack of focus and a lack of urgency," coach Mike D'Antoni said. "We picked it up, obviously, at the start of the fourth quarter but it was too late. I don't think we came out with any kind of desire to win." Detroit avenged a 104-87 home loss to New York on Dec. 29, but hasn't been able to slow down David Lee. The Knicks leading scorer is averaging 28.0 points and 14.5 rebounds against the Pistons this season, and has five double-doubles in his last six meetings.

Danilo Gallinari scored a team-high 27 points and Lee added 26 in Saturday's loss. Gallinari and Nate Robinson combined for 20 fourth-quarter points. "With twelve minutes to go and guys out there that can shoot the ball like Nate Robinson or Danilo Gallinari, that's not really a big lead," Atkins said. The Knicks are 17-6 all-time on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, winning 102-98 at home over Chicago last season as they limited Ben Gordon to eight points on 3-of-15 shooting. Gordon, a Mount Vernon, New York native, hit a game-winning shot in his first game at MSG as a pro on Martin Luther King Jr. Day five years ago for the Bulls in an 88-86 victory. The first-year Pistons guard, though, has missed three straight games with a strained right groin.Detroit's Tayshaun Prince has missed the last four games due to a knee problem while Will Bynum has sat out nine in a row with an ankle injury.

Could the Detroit Pistons be for sale?
Could a new downtown arena house both the Red Wings and Pistons if Karen Davidson sells the team? The Wall Street Journal reported over the weekend that Pistons owner Karen Davidson put her Colorado vacation home on the market (asking price: $47 million, if you're interested), and according to Chris McCosky of the Detroit News, the Pistons and Palace Sports and Entertainment might not be far behind: In the meantime, Pistons owner Karen Davidson seriously is considering selling the Pistons and Palace Sports and Entertainment. She already has had a conversation with NBA commissioner David Stern on the process and protocol for attracting potential buyers. Once she sells, there would be nothing keeping the Pistons tethered to The Palace. There also has been a lot of chatter about the Ilitches making an offer to buy the Pistons and Palace Sports and Entertainment. They may have thought about it, but according to sources, Mike Ilitch is not a fan of the NBA. While he might be interested in The Palace, he has no interest in buying the Pistons.

I think among fans, there's always been a lot of support for the Pistons moving back downtown, although as McCosky points out, Bill Davidson was always against the idea. He also reports in the article that with the Red Wings in desperate need of a new facility, they have already discussed a lease agreement with the Palace while possible renovations are made at the Joe.

A big selling point for Palace Sports and Entertainment, regardless of who buys it, is the fact that the Palace itself is still one of the best facilities in the NBA, largely a result of Bill Davidson's commitment to putting a first-class team on the court. There are always wealthy people interested in owning sports franchises, but minus the arena, buying a team in Detroit, where the economy is worse than most other parts of the country, may pose more challenges than normal. Too bad Dan Gilbert owns the Cavs. I'm sure he would've been very interested in the Pistons if he hadn't bought the majority share in the Cavs in 2005. Regarless, whoever ultimately owns the team, it will be weird not having the Davidson name attached.

'Warrior' Ben Wallace impresses Pistons' John Kuester, teammates with weekend effort
Detroit Pistons center Ben Wallace is 35. He had 13 points and 21 rebounds -- both season-highs -- while playing 41 minutes Friday in an overtime win over the New Orleans Hornets. The next night, he chased New York Knicks center David Lee all over the court. Some would probably expect, 30 minutes after the Knicks game, an exhausted Wallace would have been in a chair in front of his locker, with his head hanging, huffing and puffing for air. That was hardly the case. "He played all those minutes," Pistons guard Chucky Atkins said, "and he's in the weight room right now."The message is clear: After struggling through a couple of injury-plagued seasons, Wallace is doing just fine.

Pistons coach John Kuester often cites Wallace's age when using Big Ben -- or "Body," as Wallace commonly is called by teammates -- as an example of how hard work can pay off. About 90 minutes prior to the Knicks game, Kuester said he would keep an eye on Wallace's minutes."I just talked to him a few minutes ago and asked him, 'How do you feel?' He said, 'I'm ready to go.' I said, 'All right. Just lie to your body. That's all you can do is lie to your body,'" Kuester said. "He had such a big game (Friday) night, and we have to be very cognizant of what's going on with those minutes." Wallace played 29 minutes Saturday night and finished with five points, seven rebounds, three assists and four blocked shots. All four of his blocked shots came in the second half, and three were against Lee. Two of his blocks came on consecutive shots by Lee that were 4 seconds apart in the third quarter.

Those 29 minutes were not easy ones, either. Lee is an athletic center who keeps defenders moving. He finished with 26 points, 17 rebounds and nine assists, but he had just 10 points after the first quarter. "Ben Wallace is a warrior, man," Atkins said. "He's been doing his thing for a lot of years. I think a lot of other people make more of the age thing than we do. This guy's a top athlete. He knows what his body can do and what he can't do. "I think coaches sometimes and the media make more of the age thing than us players do. The guy leaves it out there on the court every night for you, so what can you say?" Wallace certainly did that Friday against the Hornets in what might have been his best game of the season. "When you see him elevate for the rebounds he was getting tonight, he was head and shoulders over everybody," Kuester said after that game. "I was like, 'Whoa, Body's ready to play.'" It was an impressive performance. But it was no surprise to his teammates. "Nothing surprises me about that guy," Atkins said. "He's a rare breed."

Play it again
The Pistons expect the Knicks to be at their best Monday when the two teams have a rematch in New York, especially after the Knicks nearly rallied for a win Saturday. They trailed by 21 points in the second half and by 17 at the start of the fourth quarter. "The thing that's going to scare us is the fact that they had that big run in the fourth quarter," Atkins said. "Those guys are going to come out at home really confident. We've got to come out there and stick to our game plan."

The Knicks are 9-11 at home and 7-13 on the road this season. "They're a team that plays so much better at home. Everybody understands that," Kuester said. "We're going to have to come out and be focused."

Odds & ends
The 14 points and 10 rebounds for Chris Wilcox on Saturday were both season-highs. Former Pistons draft pick Darko Milicic was inactive for the Knicks on Saturday and has not played in a game since Nov. 13.
