Detroit Pistons (14-25) at New York Knicks (16-24), 1 p.m.
The Detroit Pistons have pulled a 180 after their season- long 13-game losing streak and will aim for a fourth consecutive win against the New York Knicks on Martin Luther King Day at Madison Square Garden. Detroit is averaging 101 points per game during the win streak and opened a home-and-home series versus the Knicks with Saturday's 94-90 triumph at The Palace of Auburn Hills. Rodney Stuckey netted 20 points and Charlie Villanueva notched 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Pistons, who got 14 points and 10 boards from Chris Wilcox. "We got to understand that this is the NBA and the game can change really quickly on you," said Pistons guard Chucky Atkins, who had 10 points off the bench. "Teams like New York will be knocking down threes. They can score so fast that 17 or 18 points, that lead really is not big enough lead with 12 minutes to go in the game. We have to continue to play and get the game to four, five minutes and then be with a 19-point lead, then you will feel little more safe."
Richard Hamilton scored 15 in the win. In injury news for Detroit, forward Tayshaun Prince (knee) has missed four straight games and is questionable for Monday's game. Guard Ben Gordon (groin) is also listed as questionable and has been sidelined three straight games. After today's game the Pistons, who are 4-16 on the road, will kick off a six- game homestand versus Boston, Indiana, Portland, Memphis, Miami and Orlando. The Knicks are commencing a five-game homestand this afternoon and will entertain the Pistons, Lakers, Mavericks, Timberwolves and Raptors at MSG.
In the recent setback to Detroit, David Lee checked in with 26 points, 17 rebounds and nine assists for New York, which has lost two straight and four of its last five games. Danilo Gallinari had 27 points in defeat. "Lack of energy, lack of focus and lack of urgency," said Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni. "I don't think the main guys that were playing came out with any kind of desire to win. It's too bad. We picked it up, obviously in the second half, start of the fourth quarter. We got good minutes from Jordan (Hill), which was good. We'll go from there and we'll see if we can get it done." New York owns a 9-11 ledger in the Big Apple this season. The 2009-10 season series between Detroit and New York is tied at a game apiece, while the Knicks have won three of the past five matchups between the teams.

Again and again! From this angle and that angle! Det @ NY
Detroit Pistons at New York Knicks, Jan 18, 2010 12:00 PM CST
Game tips at 1:00 pm ET
Detroit Pistons: 14-25 (4-16 road, -4.9 margin)
New York Knicks: 16-24 (9-11 home, -1.5 margin)
Oppo Research
Because the NBA likes to pretend that people don't have to work on Martin Luther King Day, it schedules games as early as possible to take advantage of the fact that most people enjoy lunchtime basketball. If you don't like noon tip-offs, you don't like civil rights. But yeah, we saw this team on Saturday, and got all the opposition research we could handle. I don't think there's any way the Pistons can let David Lee and Danilo Gallinari go off for 53 points and still win on the road. Other than that, the game plan should be the same. Force the Knicks to become a jump-shooting team, and you win.
Pistons Retro Moment
Let's see Rodney Stuckey do this.
Keys for Detroit
Keep Lee quiet - We've seen this movie before. The guy has been destroying us.
Keep Charlie V. close to the basket - It was the tale of two Charlies on Saturday, as he went off for 19 and 10 in spite of wasting his time shooting three pointers.
Get Rip going -Hey, I'll take 16 points in the first 94 seconds.
Question of the Game
Can the Pistons do it again? This is a good step toward putting a potential eight-seed contender in the rear-view mirror.

Pistons, Palace may be for sale
It is possible, perhaps even likely, that within this decade the Red Wings and Pistons will partner to build and share a sports arena in downtown Detroit, sources told The Detroit News.

Source: Pistons not for sale, but could be soon
The Detroit Pistons, one of the NBA’s most valuable franchises, are not for sale but could be in the not-so-distant future, a person close to the situation told the Free Press this morning. At issue is whether Karen Davidson, who assumed control of the franchise after her husband’s death last year, wants to continue to own an NBA franchise. Unknown also is what Davidson wants to do, if anything, with Place Sports and Entertainment, the umbrella operation that runs the Pistons, the Palace of Auburn Hills, DTE Energy Music Theatre and Meadow Brook Music Festival.
Also it’s believed any decision to sell the team right now would not be made solely by Karen Davidson, according to the source, but a collective decision by the heirs and trustees of the Davidson estate. Bill Davidson was estimated to be worth nearly $4 billion when he died March 13, 2009. The source did not want to be identified because of the sensitive nature of the situation.Finding a buyer could be difficult during the country’s economic turmoil. Forbes puts the Pistons’ value at $479 million, fourth highest in the 30-team NBA. Bill Davidson, who died at 86, purchased the Pistons from Fred Zollner in 1974. In 17 seasons under Zollner, the Pistons had two winning seasons. The next 17 under Davidson brought nine winning seasons, including two NBA titles.
In 1978, Davidson moved the team from Cobo Arena in downtown Detroit to Silverdome in Pontiac. In 1988, he built the privately funded Palace, one of the first NBA arenas to prominently feature luxury boxes. According to Forbes, the Pistons trail only the $607-million Los Angeles Lakers at No..1, the New York Knicks and Chicago Bulls. The Pistons’ figure represents no change from last year. Forbes released its annual rankings of team valuations early last month.Forbes, though, called it a nightmare year for the Pistons, with Davidson’s death, on-court failures, lower ticket prices and staff layoffs. On the bright side, Forbes cited a new cable deal.

Game Thread: Detroit Pistons at New York Knicks
Tip: 1 p.m., Fox Sports Detroit
Probable Starters: DET - G: Rodney Stuckey, Rip Hamilton; F: Jonas Jerebko, Chris Wilcox; C: Ben Wallace.
NY - G: Chris Duhon, Jared Jeffries; F: Wilson Chandler, Danilo Gallinari; C: David Lee.
Notes: Not much to say that wasn't said here, but if the Pistons can extend their win streak to four, they'll move to within a half game of the Knicks for 10th in the East. That doesn't sound like much, but we take baby steps around here lately. The Knicks are a dysfunctional team. The only two guys most assuredly coming back are Gallinari and Chandler. The Knicks also have a group of veterans like Al Harrington, Larry Hughes and Chris Duhon who are free agents and have to worry about getting a contract next year. Unfortunately, coach Mike D'Antoni has not been overly sympathetic and has handed out minutes very inconsistently. Here was Hughes after Saturday's Pistons game: "It's a joke.'' That salvo was uttered by Larry Hughes after last night's loss to the Pistons - fourth in five games. He was referring to Mike D'Antoni's weird ways - his ever-revolving rotation and inability to communicate to the players effected. He was referring to playing nine minutes in the first half, with no notice, and then being benched again in the second half. Hughes hadn't played in seven straight games since Nate Robinson's Jan. 1 return. Perhaps the coach could've given him a heads-up.The incident with Hughes follows incidents with Nate Robinson. The Knicks are just simply not a team the Pistons should lose to. They proved through three quarters that they can allow David Lee to get his numbers and contain everyone else. That has to be the plan again going into today's game in New York. Lee playing well is one thing, but when young streaky guys like Robinson or Chandler get it going and the crowd gets into the game, it's bad news. Look for the Knicks to go to Jordan Hill a bit earlier in today's game -- the rookie was pretty effective in the second half Saturday.
Last meeting: A 94-90 Pistons win Saturday.

25: Pistons: The mix looks awful as injured players return. Just too many guys seeking out shots. They're also anxious to deal, mostly Tayshaun Prince. Not a big market. Their free agency plan hasn't worked and you can see them making major changes.

Outlook
Most looked at this as the Pistons’ last chance to get into the playoff race. I didn’t necessarily agree, but so far, so good for Detroit.
The Pistons are 2-0 to begin their stretch of having eight of nine games at home. Today is the only road game, and it’s against a very beatable Knicks team.
But it will be tough for Detroit to extend its three-game winning streak, and I think David Lee will be the main reason.
Lee is averaging 28.0 points (.579 field-goal percentage), 14.5 rebounds and 7.0 assists in two games against the Pistons year.
Oh, and the Pistons best interior defender, Ben Wallace, is 35 and is coming off the three-game stretch with the most minutes he’s played all season.
Doesn’t look promising for that matchup – and thusly, the game.
Willy Bynum and Ben Gordon are doubtful, and Tayshaun Prince is questionable, according to Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press.
Patrick Hayes of Full-Court Press has a nice breakdown of Saturday’s game between these two teams.
Check out Daily Dime Live to chat during the game.

Rip out (stomach)
NEW YORK - Amazing. Rip Hamilton (stomach ailment) joins Ben Gordon (groin), Tayshaun Prince (knee) and Will Bynum (ankle) out of the action today against the Knicks. In covering team sports for over 20 years, I can't remember a team being so unlucky in terms of injuries as the Pistons have been this season.

The Detroit Pistons will try to extend their three-game winning streak without shooting guard Rip Hamilton this afternoon.
Hamilton will miss today’s game against the Knicks because a stomach illness. Austin Daye will get the start at shooting guard.

Roy misses second straight game
Portland Trail Blazers guard Brandon Roy will miss his second straight game because of a sore right hamstring.
Roy hoped to play Monday afternoon against the Washington Wizards. But after consulting with coach Nate McMillan and a team trainer following warm-ups, Roy decided not to play. He also missed Friday's game against Orlando. Roy left during the third quarter of the Blazers' 120-108 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday night. An MRI on Thursday confirmed the strain. The two-time All-Star leads Portland with 23.4 points and 5.1 assists per game.
Jerryd Bayless will start for Roy again.

Nate Robinson showed his game is much more than dunks, scoring 27 points Monday to lead the New York Knicks to a 99-91 victory and a split of a home-and-home series with the Detroit Pistons.
Fellow reserve Al Harrington and Wilson Chandler each added 17 points as the Knicks bounced back from consecutive losses, including Saturday's 94-90 defeat in Detroit, and improved to 18-6 on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Rodney Stuckey scored 22 for the short-handed Pistons, who had their three-game winning streak snapped. They led after three quarters with a gutty effort but simply didn't have enough firepower with four of their top six scorers out.

Robinson scores 27, as Knicks beat Pistons 99-91
Nate Robinson showed his game is much more than dunks, scoring 27 points Monday to lead the New York Knicks to a 99-91 victory and a split of a home-and-home series with the Detroit Pistons. Chosen earlier in the day to defend his slam dunk title at All-Star weekend, Robinson made five 3-pointers, one during a 7-0 spurt that started the fourth quarter and gave the Knicks the lead for good. Already missing Ben Gordon (strained right groin), Tayshaun Prince (sore left knee) and Will Bynum (sprained left ankle), the Pistons were even further weakened when Richard Hamilton came down with an upset stomach. Detroit hung around into the fourth quarter, but Stuckey appeared to run out of gas, scoring his only two points of the period in the final minute. Ben Wallace scored a season-high 16 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, and Austin Daye and Charlie Villanueva also had 16 points for the Pistons.
Robinson did most of his damage in his 13-point second quarter from the perimeter, though he thrilled the crowd late in the period with a dunk off an alley-oop pass from Chris Duhon for a 12-point lead. The Knicks led 57-43 at the half. Detroit turned it around by holding the Knicks to 11 points in the third, their worst quarter of the season, and led 70-68 going to the final period. The Pistons were down only one with 10 minutes left before Harrington, Danilo Gallinari and Robinson made 3-pointers in a 13-4 spurt that gave the Knicks an 88-78 lead, and they held on from there. Gallinari finished with 16 points and David Lee had 11 points and 15 rebounds for New York. The Knicks missed their first six shots in falling behind 7-0, made five of their next six to grab the lead, and it was tied at 23 after one.
NOTES: Eddy Curry is expected to miss about six weeks after knee surgery, the latest setback for the injury-plagued Knicks center. The team said he would have an arthroscopic procedure on Monday to remove loose cartilage in his left knee and begin rehabilitation within a week. Curry has played only seven games this season. ... Robinson will compete against Gerald Wallace, Shannon Brown, and either DeMar DeRozan or Eric Gordon on Feb. 13 in Dallas. ... Stuckey came in averaging 21.9 points when Hamilton and Gordon are out.
