Pistons for sale,

Having the Pistons, Lions, and Tigers all playing the same day IS theoretically possible.

Add in the Red Wings as well.

This really isn't a concern for three reasons. One, there really aren't that many days in a given season where multiple teams are playing at home on the same day. Two, people that generally attend games on a regular basis attend one particular sport regularly and not the others. You aren't going to find many season ticket holders of more than one sport. Three, if the team is good it will sell out, period. That goes for all four sports.

I doubt the Pistons will ever leave Detroit. Even in the country's worst economy the team is still profitable. Why would a new owner move the team?

This is just another reason I hope LeBron leaves Cleveland this summer.

Dan Gilbert tried so hard to get the Pistons from Mr. D. In fact, he made a standing offer that to my knowledge, he never rescinded. Obviously he decided on buying the Cavaliers when it was clear Mr. D wouldn't sell the team, but when LeBron goes, so does any incentive to hold onto that team.

He hasn't been the world's best owner in Cleveland, but as a replacement for the Davidson's, I like him for three reasons:

1) He's willing to spend. He won't demand a clean salary slate before buying the team.

2) He's willing to let his GM have autonomy. He's not a Heisey who wants to micromanage the team.

3) He (and everyone in his ownership group) is a Michigan guy. Hell, he tried to make the Q exactly like the Palace, just dimmer and louder.

As mentioned, I don't think Illitch has interest and no other obvious potential buyers come to mind.

Karen Davidson only cares about money and is trying to sell many of the families assets. She can do what she wishes, but she needs to make sure the next owner is going to do the right thing, because the Pistons have so much history, and the NBA needs them to continue to be strong for the future.

The team is worth just over $400 million and I believe was purchased for under $10 million during the 70's.

Karen can sell the team as she wishes and isn't responsible for the next owner. The next owner will most likely look at this as a business and run it accordingly. Only a few owners, like Cuban, are willing to overspend to win. With the current salary cap, GMs have to be smart with how they spend it, and the owners make more revenue if the team is winning. Add all of that up and we should still be in a competitve position as long as Joe has a better year this year than last.

As for the team moving, there has to be another city that has a brand new arena - not too many of those around right now, and in this economy, not likely anytime soon. So I think the Pistons are staying put.

supposedly, the Vancouver Canucks owner wanted to buy Pacers over the summer, and move them to Vancouver. Any chance they can buy the Pistons and move them? As for a new arena, I don't they'll need one. I think GM place is pretty good.

What if a buyer wants to move the team? Palace might be a nice venue, but it is 20 years old, and a few cities have new arenas and are just waiting for a pro team. Pistons are no different then Seattle Super Sonics really.

Sadly, I'd probably begin to lose interest in basketball. I'd root for Denver but certainly wouldn't watch as much. I know I've lost interest in the playoffs once the Pistons have been knocked out unless it's a damn good series.

Actually the Pistons aren't like the Sonics. The Palace has been renovated over the years, including new gym, practice facilities, etc just last year. Also, the Pistons are not dependent on public tax money like the Sonics were. The city doesn't have to vote for upgrades, renovations, etc that the residents of Seattle didn't want to pay for.

To be honest, I don't know if I could root for the Pistons if they moved. I'd support the players wherever they go, but the Pistons are special because they are my hometown team. They represent me. If the team did move and changed ownership, team concept, colors, maybe the name... it just wouldn't be my Pistons.

with a possible lack of bidders, i wonder if going public is ever considered. green bay is the only pro sports team in america publicly owned, and it seems to have worked for them.

And recently, Newcastle (another famous English football club) are for sale, and their fans are trying to raise capital to buy their favourite team out.

The Pistons would be tougher to move or "go public" because of the Palace. It's a private stadium that's owned by the group that owns the team. They are not likely to sell one asset (the team) without either including the stadium OR ensuring that the stadium is filled 41 days/nights of the year.

Yes, even without the Pistons the PofAH would be a concert venue, but it's Palace SPORTS and Entertainment. The two are hard to split here.
