Two Winter Classics - Good Or Bad?

Post#1 » by WEFFPIM » Fri Dec 18, 2009 11:48 pm

NHL wants two Winter Classics, one in the US and one in Canada. They haven't decided if they want to do both on New Year's Day or make the Canadian one on Hockey Day In Canada.

Personally, I would love there to be two on New Year's Day. What makes the NBA work on Christmas and the NFL work on Thanksgiving? It's an all-day event. The NHL can make New Year's Day their day if they put two outdoor games on that day, and be the first sport to break into college football's stranglehold on it. A night game would be pretty sweet as well, in my mind.

You thoughts?

The NHL pretty much now owns New Years Day with how successful the Winter Classic has been and how the bowls on New Years Day don't mean anything to the College Football season now. It would be a very smart idea to have 1 in America and 1 in Canada. Day game plays in Canada and the night game plays in America. I think the day game should be played in Canada because it gets a lot colder at night in Canada compared to the nights in America, on average. Also, having the game played on prime time in America, it gives the people time to sober up from the night before and it will give them something to watch, because for the most part, there isn't anything good on at night on New Year's Day. Also, for the hardcore hockey fans, it gives them something to watch during the day as well.

Good idea. I mean, honestly, how could it hurt? The more press and TV time the NHL can muster the better

After watching this one...please have two and make one in primetime. The 3rd period and overtime was just amazing to watch because of the shadows the lights made.

Damn you, lame college bowl games. Thanks to both the Rogers Centre and Yankee Stadium for hosting bowl games this December (that feels weird to type). I'd love to see the Leafs host the Habs at the Rogers Centre in the afternoon, Rangers host Caps/Islanders/Devils in primetime. But that won't happen now.

Agreed with your whole post. It would be a great thing. I was watching the Bruins and Flyers game and was shocked to hear them say it was the 5th most important sporting event ahead of the world series and masters.

This isn't baseball and it's not broadcast on ESPN. There are more teams than Boston and New York.

I talk with a good friend from "bean town" and he said that the Fenway Park one was a blast to be at a lot of fans were into it. I think that they should have 2 of them again one in Canada and one in US and possibly have a minor league game as well before the big game if you only have one.

So, I get to go to Wisconsin's version of the Winter Classic in February. Outdoor game against Michigan at Camp Randall Stadium. That should be fun.

Don't think a minor league game would work. Not enough of a fanbase to make it worth it.

Stick to the NHL. One in Canada, one in the United States and then try to get one in college per year. Michigan and Wisconsin at Camp Randall should be a blast just like Ohio State and Wisconsin at Lambeau was.
