Odds of Al Thornton getting traded?

Post#1 » by dklee13 » Tue Jan 19, 2010 6:26 am

Just noticing that Al hasn't been playing b/c of an ankle injury. Anybody think he's destined to be dealt before the trade deadline? Is so, where and for who?

I could see Big Al being traded, maybe not until we realize that we are out of the playoffs though.

Preferably for a big upgrade at SF or a combo guard who can score off the bench.

Possibilities?

a. Charlotte for Boris Diaw (Packaged with Camby & other bench guys)

b. Memphis for Rudy Gay (Camby, Butler, + draft picks???) - probably not very likely anyway

c. Dalls for J Howard (w/ Camby & other bench guys) - don't really want him though.

d. Phoenix for Barbosa (w/ Butler, Telfair, ?)

If Thornton is traded, I think it will be in the summer time. Probably with a 2nd round pick and cash to clear up cap space for a free agent signing. Similar to what Philadelphia did with Rodney Carney before they signed Elton Brand.

I doubt he gets traded, I mean seriously what could we get for him? He has been absolutely horrible for the most part. I would however love to see him get traded.

I was thinking, if the trade rumours around baron are true do you reckon a trade like the following could happen? Clear cap space and build for next year with a healthy Griffin?

Out - BD, Camby, Thornton
In - O'neal, James Jones

Could get a nice draft pick and hopefully pick up a big name free agent.

Where'd you hear the rumors about BD?

You hit the nail on the head. There's no need to trade him now unless something great comes along and he's tossed in.

With Butler playing better of late there is more of a chance that he gets traded. It probably will be during the summer time. I used to be a big Al supporter and he hasn't played all that well this season. I'm still hoping that he gets back in the rotation and players better, he will be needed if we are going to be successful.

I would like to trade him and probably Butler for Battier, even though I like Butler here. Battier is exactly what we need. After a deal like that, we could trade our TPE to gain back wing depth (Devin Brown).

I wouldn't mind seeing him get moved. I agree that it probably wouldn't happen until summer and that it would be to free up a little extra cap room if necessary. He's a very frustrating player. I like what he can bring to the table, but the lack of consistency to bring it has been his problem since the beginning of his NBA career. Right now he's concerned about being a starter, but doesn't give us what we need as a starting 3 (we're 7-4 with him coming off the bench). You would think that he would thrive as instant offense off the bench. The problem is that he hasn't been able to do that very well either.

Still believe AL is a legit sixth man if he will accept the role. He is for sure going to give us 14pts off the bench which is a huge need for us.

I like what I have seen out of Thornton as 6th man, but if he and his agent don't like that arrangement, then maybe a summer deal could be in the works. He had a slow start to the season, but has picked up his play since then.

Wizard fan here - I understand by some of the comments that Thornton is not well appreciated in LA. Since we've just acquired him - can you provide us a few details about him? His strengths/weaknesses? His attitude and work ethic?

Cheers.

Well.. He likes to score. In various ways of taking wild turn around jump shots, or driving to the basket. There are days where you'll appreciate the energy he provides on the offensive end, then other days where you just wanna scream to him not to take such stupid shots. His man defense is sub par, and his help defense is okay. With his athleticism you'd think he would rebound better, but he doesn't. He's quite inconsistent, and as others have said, if he ever accepts the role of a bench player he'll be a good spark off the bench. Definitely not starting material with the way he currently plays though.

Man, looking at some of the comments here and seeing Thorton play, you'd think it's two completely different players. Thorton absolutely shut down Melo tonight. His defense was downright vicious.

Oh Well. Thanks a bunch!!

He definitely has the tools to be a good defender, but his D just didn't work out here for some reason. He is an athletic player and has long arms. Maybe since he was traded maybe something clicked that he needed to play defense. I hope he works out for the Wizards because he is a player that I really liked. See if he can consistently play defense, because he seems to have a problem with consistency.

Most of us liked him, but yeah we got sick of him at times too for the reasons stated. Being a Wizard's fan is kinda cool right now. They got Sammy as an assistant coach, Q. Ross, Singleton, and Thornton. I'm kinda jealous. :(

Thornton has always had talent. The thing that frustrated many is that his performances were never really consistent. He could be the type where if he averaged 20ppg, it would be 30 one night and 10 the next. IMO he's better off when he's the go-to-guy, and when he presents a mismatch while playing the 4. I didn't really get to see him go off in yesterday's game (only caught the 1st half), but I'm glad to see that he played well in his debut. I hope he keeps it up. If he truly turns it around, maybe it was just a change of scenery that he needed.

I almost forgot about Sammy coaching. That's 5 ex-Clippers, 6 if you included Paul Davis who they had earlier in the season, and possibly a future Clip in Mike Miller.
