Por/Min trade

Post#1 » by Narf » Wed Jan 20, 2010 8:36 am

Saw this on the ESPN board and thought it was a worthy trade discussion.
Jefferson and Flynn -or- Jefferson and Sessions

for

Oden, Rudy Fernandez, and Andre Miller

Fernandez is an obvious upgrade at SG. Oden is a big, defensive center...for about 50 games a year. And Andre Miller has a team option the year Rubio is supposed to come over. Rubio comes over, we cut him. Rubio stays, we pick up Millers option.

This is a high risk, high reward type of trade. I think I'd do it for Sessions, I have a hard time doing it for Flynn. Portland gets a good fit next to Pryzbilla with LMA coming off the bench. When Pryz sits, Al shifts to center (usually against the other team's backup center).

It might be right value wise, but I just have a hard time picturing Oden being moved. I feel like he's worth a lot more to the Blazers than he is to anyone else, and therefore skews the notion of a balanced trade. They invested a lot in him, and though Jefferson is far from a boobie prize for someone who has proven to be extremely injury prone, it would be unwise to give up now.

I really like Fernandez for us, though. Provides some much needed outside shooting and seems like a high-energy and colorful character for the fans to root for.

i love Fernandez for us too, allows Brewer to be our fulltime SF, moves Gomes to the bench, and lets face it, Oden does need a change of scenery, he is never going to be a "success" in Portlands eyes unless he single handedly wins the MVP/championship/Finals MVP, especially not with how Durrant has been playing.

i don't believe this trade will ever happen due to Oden's "potential" and his preceived value.

I think Portland will say NO ...

... even if Wolves offers Jefferson+Flynn x Oden+Fernández (without Miller). Two reasons :

- Oden has a great potential of developmen and is a (scant) pure center.

- Portland's fans are in love with Rudy and he is still young and he is untested player. Some (american) NBA specialists named him as a sophomore with better develop options for 2009-10.

But I love this trade.

I think I'd have to say no to this. Fernandez is someone I'd like to target. Oden has great potential but is pretty scary given his history. I'm not sure how he'd fit in a running offense, either. I'd probably do something involving those two but adding Miller is the deal breaker for me. I don't want to pay an over-the-hill PG $7-8m through 2012. We would need a vet PG that would be a good backup to Flynn or Rubio and Miller seems to want to be the starter. Too much financial risk, chemistry risk, and injury risk for me.

The Google Translator say me that we need a PG veterinary. I think Rubio isn't it, but his family likes animals and his sister has a turtle.

BTW, being realistic, it's a good trade Oden x Jefferson+Sessions

vet PG was referring to veteran PG, not veterinarian PG but it's good to hear they like animals. I had a bunch of turtles when I was a kid.

Here's my canned Oden response:

While I like the potential upside Oden would represent, he has more value in Portland because fans have dreamed of it for far longer, and I don't think he could be traded for a fair value. However, he'd probably be a mistake for us financially as well.

Oden is due a new contract in 18 months.

Who here is confident about giving him four years, at $10 mil plus? What has he shown? And even if you are OK locking into a long, risky contract, what do you do when another team (probably POR) offers your RFA $12?

Here's my canned response.
23.9 minutes, 11.1 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.3 blocks, 26.0 PER, 13.3 opponent PER
Risk, meet Reward. Reward, meet Risk.

As far as Miller goes, the salaries of Portland's players are equal to the salaries of Minnesota's players next year, and he has a TEAM option for 2012. So it's only 1 year at a semi-bad salary, where as Fernandez has 2 years on a great salary before being a RFA (we could extend him this year rather than wait though). It more than evens out, since it's total salary for the talent vs total salary for the talent.

When Oden can play a full 82 games in ONE season, and not spread out over 3 seasons, then I'll consider him. Until then, Oden does nothing for me. Yeah he has a ton of talent and a ton of potential, but no chance I'd take a chance on him.

Andre Miller is way too old and expensive for this club.

Rudy Fernandez is the only plus we're getting, but I don't think he makes up the value.

As soon as Flynn's name was mentioned I'd hang up the phone.

No reason to gamble our teams future like this. You get ahead making consistent smart - safe choices. Worked for OKC. Works for Wall Street. Same goes here.

I laughed too. I would expect some of us internet mavens to start researching other NBA players with similarly aged sisters/daughters who have reptiles for pets, who we can trade for to insure Rubio comes over.

Last week's WNBA trade between the Lynx and Sun was said to be because they wanted to bring best friends back together on the same team. Whalen was brought back home. Q-Rich was traded to Miami so he could hang out with his BFF D-Wade.

Seriously, the world is turning into a sunnier place. I'm sure this reptile, similar family interests thing could work.

Or we could just get some Thai hookers for the locker room. You know, go the college route.

Portland sure wouldnt want another shoot first young pg in their ranks, they already have Bayless, and to a lesser extent, Mills.

Return to Minnesota Timberwolves
