Jays cover mound with Merkin

Post#1 » by Schad » Wed Jan 20, 2010 9:46 pm

Valdez is a tall, hard-throwing righty with no control, and middling strikeout numbers. But I'm excited. Not because he'll be good, but because AA has struck gold yet again in the name department. For those not familiar, this is a merkin.

The only thing better would be if we reacquired Dave Bush, had him pitch briefly before getting sent down to the minors in favour of Valdez, so that we could have "Merkin Replaces Bush" headlines. I might even have to start a petition to that effect, as I have it on good authority that online petitions make **** like this happen.

Is AA being dared to collect as many sexually-innuendo sounding names as possible?

Anyways, Valdez, from what I've read, was once a prominent prospect 5 years ago who, after Tommy John surgery, has lost his way a bit. However, he's still got an excellent fastball and, if he can develop a good second pitch, can be a League-like reliever.

Valdez is worth a shot in my book. I doubt he'll make the bullpen though, unlike what the article in TSN suggests, right off the bat but could spend time in Las Vegas as, at the very least, the closer there.

Giants totally ruined him in 2004 when he jumped 3 levels to the major leagues. This dude was a hot prospect back in the day. Next thing you know your 28 and you are dealt for nothing.

Still a chance the Jays get some use out of him. I remember when he was supposed to be the next hot shot closer for the Giants.
