NFL investigating Packers player bonuses

Post#1 » by Fandom » Mon Nov 19, 2007 7:28 pm

Green Bay - NFL spokesman Greg Aiello confirmed this morning that the league is looking into whether payoffs between Green Bay Packers teammates for certain in-game incentives, as reported by ESPN on Sunday morning, were in violation of league rules.

The league's involvement was first reported by profootballtalk.com.

Sunday NFL Countdown reported that two Packers defensive backs had offered the defensive linemen $500 if they held Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson under 100 yards in the Nov. 11 game.

Another $500 was offered if the Packers held the Carolina Panthers to under 60 yards rushing on Sunday.

Aiello said league rules forbid such incentives.

"Clubs and players are prohibited from offering or accepting bonuses to a player for his or his team's performance against a particular team, a particular opposing player or players, or a particular group of an opposing team," Aiello said.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said he wasn't aware of the situation or the league's investigation.

"I have no knowledge of that," McCarthy said. "I have not been made aware or that. I haven't talked to (general manager) Ted (Thompson) this morning, so if it's somethign that happened this morning, we have not spoken. But I have no knowledge of that."

Illegal or not, that's awesome. I really don't know how you could prove that money was being handed out. It's all hearsay.

I saw the thread title and said a quiet, "Oh ****...". I assumed there was some sort of under the table shenanigans going on ala the Timberwolves and Joe Smith.

Then I read the article and thought, "Hey, whatever motivates 'em".

How is this different than a QB rewarding his lineman with cars and watches?

I had the exact same reaction at first.

BTW, I think you make a good point about the similarity of to this of QBs and RBs buying things for their lineman if they achive certain rushing/passing milestones. I don't see how we could get punished for this as long as the coaches weren't in on it, but I suppose anything is possible.

I really don't see any major punishment coming out of this; maybe a slap on the wrist and a reminder of the "rules".

But yeah, there's no way the NFL could prove any cash exchanged hands.

I'm missing why the league cares about this at all. It's players doing this among themselves, not the team. Plus, the money involved is pocket change for these guys.

This rule is in place to make sure:

1.) coaches and management is not offering under the table incentives
2.) players are not offering bounties to hurt other players.

They are investigating it to make sure none of that happened (especially with LJ and AD going down in consecutive weeks), then will decide nothing crazy went on.

I thought this had to do with the Packers offering crazy incentives in player contracts using loopholes in the CBA. We've been really aggressive in using up cap space through incentive bonuses. This is minor.

They wouldn't punish a team in New York, though.

I see nothing wrong with this. As was stated, as long as it isn't any coaches or management giving players money under the table, there should be nothing wrong with it. It isn't any different than a quarterback taking his receivers and lineman out to dinner. Its probably the media trying to put anything against the feel good story of the season.

This is just like the time-honored baseball tradition of a team holding a kangaroo court, levelling fines and paying out rewards during the baseball season. Is it any wonder the NFL frequently gets labelled as the "No Fun League"? Someone might want to remind the NFL that fantasy football leagues, which they actively promote, could be argued to be illegal gambling.

Here's some former Brewers talking about their kangaroo court:

$500 is a lot better than those crappy isotoner gloves that Dan Marino used to give his offensive linemen :)

Bah, those isotoners were potential get-out-of-jail-free cards. "If the gloves don't fit, you must acquit!"

A quick update to this "league investigation"...

If the players' reaction on Tuesday was any indication, the National Football League's investigation into whether the Green Bay Packers violated league rules prohibiting player-to-player bonuses for in-game goals won't yield much.

Both cornerbacks Charles Woodson and Al Harris said they knew "nothing" about the ESPN report that Packers defensive backs offered $500 to defensive linemen for holding Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson under 100 yards, and the Carolina Panthers under 60 yards rushing.

"You guys are really wasting your time beating a dead horse," Harris said. "You're bringing wind to it to us. We know nothing about what's going on."

When asked if he had been contacted by the league, Harris did not answer the question. Woodson said he had not.

"For what?" They couldn't get nothing from me," Woodson said. "I don't know (anything)."

Sometimes ESPN pisses me off so much I can't even tell you. The network as a whole ofttimes acts similar to a 15 year girl trying to start gossip they know isn't true simply to stir sh*t up. I realize it helps them fill time and occasionally serves to generate better ratings, but it is almost always transparent and annoying as h*ll (not to mention totally unscrupulous).
