The Boston Celtics announced today that guard J.R. Giddens has been assigned to the Maine Red Claws. Giddens is the team’s third assignment to the NBA Development League this season.

Giddens, a 6’5” guard, has appeared in 21 games for the Celtics this season and registered season-highs of six points and seven rebounds against New Jersey on January 13.

His average for the season is 1.1 points in 4.7 minutes per game.

Rasheed Wallace enjoys return to Detroit
Wednesday night, the Detroit Pistons hosted the Boston Celtics. Now wearing Celtic green, former Piston Rasheed Wallace enjoyed his return.

Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press reports: As expected, he received the familiar chants of “Sheeeeeed!!!!!” as well as a smattering of boos, perhaps by some who remembered his penchant for controversy and technical fouls. “It was cool and definitely wonderful,” Wallace said after the Pistons’ 92-86 victory. “It let me know that the fans here still love me as a player. “It was pretty cool.” Wallace was playful with former teammates and the Pistons’ coaching staff during the game. “Just messing with guys,” Wallace said. “My ex-teammates and coaches … just letting them know that we still cool.”

Rasheed is having a decent season in a support role on the Celtics. He fits in and plays well with the team, but misses too many shots. Playing 23.5 minutes per game, the forward/center averages 10.2 points and 4.5 rebounds, but is shooting just 40.8% from the field and 29.7% from three-point range.

Glen Davis shouts at heckling fan
Gary Washburn and Julian Benbow of the Boston Globe report: Perhaps if you were watching last night’s Celtics-Pistons game on television or listening on the radio, you heard an expletive yelled out. That was Boston’s Glen “Big Baby’’ Davis shouting at a Detroit fan who kept calling him “fat boy’’ during the first half.

Davis’s graphic remark stunned fans sitting behind the Celtics’ bench. The fan, Scott Zack, was warned by arena security about his heckling but was determined to press the issue about Davis’s remark. Zack said he filed a complaint with NBA security.

Celtics coach Doc Rivers expressed disappointment in Davis, and it’s not the first time this season the player has been in some trouble with his coach.

Stack Gets His Chance
When Jerry Stackhouse walked out of American Airlines Center in Dallas at the end of last season he vowed he would be back. Though he has designs on coaching one day, he said he wasn't ready to stop playing the game just yet, and now he's getting that chance with the Milwaukee Bucks. When Michael Redd went down with yet another season-ending injury, the door of opportunity opened . . .and Stack jumped at the chance to get back in the action. "I was just kind of waiting for an opportunity," Stackhouse told ESPN Radio in Milwaukee. "Once you get into the season injuries happen, teams have needs and I just felt that something would come about. Obviously, I missed last year. I tore my plantar and was only able to play 10 games with Dallas. I've had a long time to kind of let my legs rest. I've been dealing with some little nags for the last two or three years so I was kind of questioning it a little bit. I have 14 in, maybe it was time to start thinking about doing something else. I think the rest and stepping back from it again kind of got me excited. I'm ready to go. Hopefully I can help this team do some things."

Stackhouse has been biding his time, hearing rumors of interest, but ultimately it was a relationship he had in Detroit that landed him a role with the Bucks. "I had been having some little bit of dialogue with some other teams," says Stackhouse. "It was like hold on with Atlanta, hearing some rumblings with the Lakers, couple different teams. But (GM) John Hammond, I was with him in Detroit, gave us a call and was like would I have some interest. I was like, when you want me to come? So I came out, worked out for them and obviously they liked what they saw and here I am now." It helped Stackhouse feel at home right away when head coach Scott Skiles actually discussed what he thought his role should be with him. "Scott (Skiles) kind of asked me what I wanted. That's the best thing that a player can hear. I just said, whatever you need. I know they have a young team that they are trying to develop but I've seen them play a little bit and I think I can help them close some of those games."

Stackhouse is particularly enthusiastic about playing alongside rookie Brandon Jennings, and there's little doubt Jennings will benefit from the presence of a veteran like Stack."I'm excited about it," says Stackhouse. "I'm excited about the potential for him and the potential of playing with him. I think he's a special talent and a rookie of the year candidate. He's got room to grow and I think he has a great coach. Scott's gonna tell him the straight up honest truth, the bitter truth and I think that's why we had some common ground. We are both guys that are not going to B.S you." Stackhouse suited up for the first time last night, scoring three points in 17 minutes, and while he struggled with his shot, he contributed five rebounds and four assists in a win over the Toronto Raptors. Jerry Stackhouse may not be the star he once was, but it's clear he still has plenty to give on the basketball court.

Sam in New Orleans:
Should the NBA consolidate teams, like Jerry West wants? I think both LA teams should merge; Tor/Det could merge; and, NY/NJ should merge...

Joel Brigham:
The Clippers and Lakers merge? Holy crap... do you realize what that would leave their roster looking like? It's not going to happen, by the way. If a team ever were to fold they'd hold some sort of dispersion draft where bad teams would be the better players until all the guys teams wanted were snapped up. But no teams are going to merge. Never gonna happen...

who has a better career...stuckey or beas...guess im askin if u had to keep one..who would it be? beasley scores wen given the time, whats his prob?

Tommy Beer:
think they both have the potential to fantasy studs, but if I had to keep just one, I'd go with Stuckey. Beasley will likely be stuck playing second fiddle behind D Wade. Whereas Stuckey will probably the Pistons primary offensive weapon most nights.

Doctors Reveal Griffin's Knee Procedure
We often see news releases from teams describing "successful surgery" on a player (still waiting to see the first release announcing "unsuccessful surgery"), but rarely do we hear such details of the operation as we heard about the patellar fragment excision performed on Clippers rookie Blake Griffin's left knee Wednesday.

Dr. Steven Shimoyama, who assisted Dr. Neal ElAttrache on the surgery, appeared on the Clippers pregame show on FSN Prime Ticket to discuss the procedure -- and even brought a model of the knee joint to illustrate his points.

According to Dr. Shimoyama, they cut into the patellar tendon, spread open the tendon's fibers, then removed a three-centimeter bone spur that had formed. They also found two other one-centimeter calcifications on the side of the knee and removed those. Then the tendon was sewed up. The next step was platelet-rich plasma therapy, a still-emerging treatment for athletes that is supposed to promote faster healing. (Dr. ElAttrache was quoted in this New York Times story about the procedure last year).

Pistons Owner May Sell Team
The Detroit Pistons might be for sale. “The options are being explored,” Pistons owner Karen Davidson said Wednesday night after the first quarter of a game against the Boston Celtics.

Her husband, Bill Davidson, died last year. The late owner known as “Mr. D” helped the Pistons win NBA titles in 1989, 1990 and 2004. He had said during an interview before his enshrinement into the Basketball Hall of Fame that a succession plan was in place to keep the team in the family and it would not be sold.

Karen Davidson told reporters the team could be sold by itself or as part of a package with Palace Sports and Entertainment, which includes The Palace of Auburn Hills, DTE Energy Music Theatre and Meadow Brook Music Festival.

Roy Sidelined Again; Aggravates Injury
All-Star Brandon Roy most likely will miss the final two games of the Trail Blazers' East Coast trip after aggravating his balky right hamstring Wednesday night against the Philadelphia 76ers. After banking in a driving jump shot with 1:02 remaining in the first half, Roy grabbed his hamstring and grimaced as he gingerly moved to the other end of the court to play defense. Thirty-three seconds later, after Roy was unable to sprint for a fast-break chance on offense, he limped off the Wachovia Center court with team trainer Jay Jensen and did not return for the second half.

In the visiting locker room, after the Blazers defeated the 76ers 98-90, Roy's hamstring was heavily bandaged and taped. "Odds are high that I'll miss the next two (games) just because we want to be smart with (the injury)," said Roy, who underwent treatment throughout the second half. "They don't want me to rush right back out there. I'm sure they are going to be a lot more cautious."

Officially, the Blazers are listing Roy's status as day-to-day. "I wasn't 100 percent, but I felt good enough to go out there and play," Roy said. "As the game was going, I felt like I could start picking it up more and more. And that's kind of when it happened. I was holding back a little bit on some things. When I got to the basket and I missed that left-handed layup (in the first quarter), I was like, 'Ah, it's short.' So I had to tell myself, 'Either you got to explode or you can't play.' So I started trying to play a little bit."

D.J. White Out 4-6 Weeks
Oklahoma City Thunder forward D.J. White is expected to miss six to eight weeks following surgery to repair a fracture in his right thumb.

The Thunder say White had successful surgery Thursday to repair the thumb, which White injured in practice on Tuesday.

White is averaging 4.8 points and 1.9 rebounds for Oklahoma City in eight games this season. He had not played in a Thunder game for over a month, and spent about two weeks in the NBA Development League during that time.

Fingernails Can Be A Problm
Miller said the most notorious nails in the NBA are from Detroit guard Richard Hamilton, a notion that Martell Webster seconds. “Yeah, I’ve seen his. They are nasty,’’ Webster said.

The Blazers play Hamilton and the Pistons on Saturday in Auburn Hills, Mich., and you can bet Miller isn’t thrilled. “Richard Hamilton has some nails,’’ Miller said. “I get scratched up every time I play him. Everywhere.’’

Miller says he can only take so much during a game. “I’ve seen a couple guys play with long nails, and I tell them in the game after a while that they have to cut their nails,’’ Miller said. Nobody knows scratches on the Blazers more than Brandon Roy. The All-Star estimates he has at least 30 scars on his body from fingernails, and some of the scars are strikingly hideous. It has reached the point where Roy now uses a special cream to help with the scarring.

Celtics forward could face punishment for lashing out at Pistons fan
Celtics forward Glen "Big Baby" Davis could be disciplined for shouting an obscenity at a heckling fan during a 92-86 loss to the Pistons at The Palace of Auburn Hills on Wednesday night. Coach Doc Rivers called Davis' reaction "unacceptable," according to ESPNBoston.com. "Not from me, but he might from the league," Rivers told ESPNBoston.com, regarding disciplinary action. "I'm upset that we lost, people call me names, but that's part of the game. ..."It's tough when the fans are yelling that stuff at you, but you have to be stronger than that."

The fan, sitting near the Celtic's bench, repeatedly referred to Davis as "fat boy." Davis' response was heard on Boston TV and radio telecasts, and the fan, Scott Zack, filed a complaint with NBA security, according to the Boston Globe. The Globe also reported Zack had been warned earlier about heckling Davis.

Even so, Davis, 24, a third-year pro out of LSU, should have handled it better, Rivers said. "I've heard some vile things to me and to players -- it's amazing what you hear," Rivers told ESPNBoston.com. "You should turn around, point to security and let them deal with it."

http://www.freep.com/article/20100121/S ... -Star-Game

Allen Iverson voted to start NBA All-Star Game
Former Detroit Piston Allen Iverson has been voted to start in the All-Star Game, while Steve Nash and Tim Duncan made late moves to claim starting spots for the Western Conference. Nash passed the inactive Tracy McGrady as the second guard, while Duncan disappointed Dallas fans hoping to see Dirk Nowitzki start by rallying past the Mavericks forward. LeBron James was the leading vote getter for the Feb. 14 game at Cowboys Stadium, becoming the first player to earn at least 2.5 million votes three times. Joining James and Iverson as East starters in tonight's announcement were Miami guard Dwyane Wade, Orlando center Dwight Howard and Boston forward Kevin Garnett. Lakers guard Kobe Bryant was picked in the West, along with Phoenix center Amare Stoudemire and Denver forward Carmelo Anthony.

Starters were decided by fan balloting at NBA arenas and electronically. The reserves will be chosen by votes by the head coaches in each conference and will be announced next Thursday. The fans still love Iverson, even though he has played only 19 games during the worst season of his career. He appeared on the West ballot because he began the season in Memphis, but he and the Grizzlies parted ways following only three games. Iverson’s votes counted in the East since he rejoined the Philadelphia 76ers, his longtime team. He is averaging only 14.8 points with the 76ers but will get a shot at earning a third All-Star Game MVP award if he chooses to play. Bothered by a sore knee, Iverson said he would consider his health before deciding whether to play in his 10th All-Star Game.

A McGrady election would have been a bigger embarrassment for the NBA, considering he has played sparingly in only six games for the Houston Rockets. The team gave him permission to leave the team and work out on his own while trying to find a trade, yet McGrady still was second among West guards when the most recent update was released on Jan. 7. That sparked some criticisms of the voting process, but Nash and New Orleans’ Chris Paul both moved ahead of McGrady in the final days of voting. Duncan’s late surge gives him a 12th All-Star appearance. Bryant, who claimed his third All-Star Game MVP last year when he shared it with Shaquille O’Neal in Phoenix, also will be appearing for the 12th time. Garnett’s selection was his 13th, trailing only O’Neal (15) among active players.

Return to Detroit Pistons
