Tayshaun Prince returns, feuds with John Kuester as Pistons lose
The Pistons have had a few of these this season. Another ugly loss, this time 105-93 to the lowly Indiana Pacers, in a game in which the Pacers led by as many as 18 in the first half. Rip Hamilton scored 27 for the Pistons (15-27) while Jonas Jerebko scored 14. Danny Granger led the Pacers (15-28) with 25 points.

Tayshaun Prince returned to the Pistons lineup and had seven points on 3-for-12 shooting, with six rebounds and three assists in 24 minutes.

Prince, though, got into a shouting match with coach John Kuester and had to be restrained with 7:16 left in the game when Kuester pulled his starters and emptied the bench. The Pacers led 97-74 at the time. Prince did not return to the game.

NBA Game Summary - Indiana at Detroit
Final Score: Indiana 105, Detroit 93

Danny Granger scored a team-high 25 points and Brandon Rush made 5-of-8 from three-point range and finished with 19 points, as the Indiana Pacers claimed a 105-93 win over the Detroit Pistons in a Central Division matchup at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Troy Murphy went for 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Mike Dunleavy and Roy Hibbert each contributed 14 points apiece for the Pacers, who were able to rebound from a 109-98 setback at Orlando on Wednesday and snapped a three-game slide in the process. Richard Hamilton led all scorers with 27 points and Jonas Jerebko finished with 14 points and seven rebounds for Detroit, which gained an impressive 92-86 win over Boston on Wednesday and had won four of five coming into the contest following a 13-game losing streak.

Indiana was up by as many as 14 in the early going and had a 31-19 lead after the opening quarter. However, Jerebko's layup finished off a 16-2 Pistons run to get his squad within four, 47-43, with 1:35 left in the half. The Pacers answered with three-pointers from Rush and Granger sandwiched around another Jerebko layup to put Indiana ahead 53-45 at the intermission. Murphy's layup to open the third quarter started an 11-0 Pacers burst to build the lead up to 64-45 just over two minutes in. Dahntay Jones' dunk in the final second had Indiana in front 85-67 after three and Detroit never threatened the outcome in the fourth quarter.

Game Notes
These two rivals split four matchups a year ago and despite the loss, the Pistons have still won 11 of the last 16 meetings in the series...Indiana improved to 5-18 on the road this season...Ben Gordon (groin) missed the contest for Detroit, while Pacers rookie forward Tyler Hansbrough sat out with an inner ear infection...Pistons center Ben Wallace finished with nine points, six rebounds and one blocked shot and needs six blocks to reach 2,000 for his career.

Aaron Brooks and Kyle Lowry scored 23 points apiece, and the Houston Rockets ended a five-game road skid with a 116-109 win over the San Antonio Spurs on Friday night.

Carl Landry added 19 points as the Rockets held off a furious San Antonio run in the final minutes led by Tim Duncan, who became the 35th player in NBA history to reach 20,000 points.

Duncan had 25 points and 14 rebounds, and scored the last 11 points for the Spurs. But with San Antonio trailing by four with 37 seconds left, Richard Jefferson missed a running jumper that all but thwarted the rally.

Ankle injury knocks Hornets' West out of game
New Orleans Hornets forward David West left the game Friday night against Minnesota with a sprained left ankle.

West was injured late in the second quarter on a drive to the basket. His left ankle rolled when he stepped on Timberwolves guard Corey Brewer's foot. West remained in the game to shoot free throws, but walked to the locker room after making one of two.

West was leading the team in scoring with 14 points when he left the game. The team said his return was doubtful. West is the Hornets' second-leading scorer this season with 17.8 points a game. He also averages 7.7 rebounds a game.

West inks second 10-day contract with Hawks
The Atlanta Hawks have signed guard Mario West to a second 10-day contract.

West has averaged 1.3 points and 2.3 rebounds in four games since being signed him to the Hawks, who signed him from the NBA Development League. He had spent the last two years with Atlanta before being cut this season in training camp.

West was not in uniform for Friday night's game against Charlotte.

Prince to start against Pacers
Pistons forward Tayshaun Prince will return to the lineup Friday against the Pacers after missing six games with a left knee injury and Prince will be in the starting lineup. Rookie Jonas Jerebko will come off the bench, with Rodney Stuckey, Richard Hamilton, Chris Wilcox and Ben Wallace being the other four starters. Ben Gordon (groin) and Will Bynum (ankle) remain sidelined with injuries.

Pistons coach John Kuester said he will monitor Prince’s minutes in hopes to avoid another setback. Kuester admitted it’s possible they played Prince too many minutes we he returned from a back injury. “That is one of the things, knock on wood, that I’ve hopefully learned,” Kuester said. “You have to gauge certain things and this is one of those things that I think is going to be important to gauge.”

Kuester said while he will monitor Prince’s minutes, he let Prince decide whether or not he wanted to start. “Tayshaun’s got so much history here,” Kuester said. “He’s been of the true leaders and one of the great players for this franchise. This is the first time he’s ever had to go through this and this has been very challenging for him. We talked to other day and I said, ‘Listen, you just tell me when you’re ready to go.’ He had a chipper practice is the way I like to put it. I thought he was really aggressive. That was important. The decision was going to be his.”

Bobcats' Felton helped off court after spraining ankle
Charlotte guard Raymond Felton was helped off the court Friday night after spraining his right ankle against the Hawks.

With less than a minute left in the first quarter, Felton was trying to cut past Jamal Crawford when he stepped on the Atlanta player's left foot and twisted the ankle. He went down in severe pain, then was taken to the locker room with arms wrapped around the shoulders of two team officials, putting no weight on his foot.

The fourth-year point guard came into the night averaging 12.7 points a game. X-rays were negative, and Felton planned to test the ankle at halftime to see if he could return.

Clippers waive Rush, sign Curry from D-League
The Los Angeles Clippers have signed guard JamesOn Curry to a 10-day contract and waived injured forward Kareem Rush.

Pistons vs. Pacers
Postgame Quotes - January 22, 2010
Regular Season Game #42

Pistons Head Coach John Kuester
(On the team’s effort)

“There’s no question, it was disappointing. We’d played hard four out of the last five games and this was a disappointing effort.”

(On whether the euphoria from the Boston win carried over)
“You know, it shouldn’t have happened. Guys understood that, they talked about it beforehand but it didn’t happen.”

(On the third quarter run by Indiana)
“That was disappointing.”

Pistons Forward Charlie Villanueva
(On disappointment with a loss)

“It seems like we can get excited and play the Boston Celtics but just seems that we couldn’t get it to play Indiana Pacers. It’s frustrating. It’s very frustrating to see that type of performance of us. We are better team than that.”

(On the game)
“It seems like we didn't pick it up. The Boston game gave us a lot of momentum and a lot of confidence, but it seems that we took a step backwards with this team. Hopefully we will learn from it. Don’t take any team lightly.”

(On the game)
“Guys seemed at the beginning of the game pumped up. We were excited, we knew the importance of this game, but it just seemed that when we got out there they through out the first punch and we couldn’t answer it. It was over after that. We picked it up a little bit in the second quarter and than we came out flat again. We talked about first five minutes of that third quarter to set a tone and we didn’t do it.” “They just outhustled us, played harder than us. That’s just simple: they played harder than us.”

Pacers Head Coach Jim O'Brien
(On the game)

“I think that we had a very consistent game tonight for all four quarters. I think that we set the tempo, had good shot selection and defended very well. We are 6-6 in 2010 now and looking for some consistency.”

(On using a big lineup)
“We were playing against a team that doesn’t want to fastbreak and the bigs were effective. That is where the desire for consistency comes in and we want more of our lineups to be consistent.”
(On Rush stepping up)
“He is starting to become very aggressive and I am very pleased with how he is playing.”

(On good start to halves)
“We did, our starters did a great job for us and we had good inside-outside attack and good movement. We also defended and made the extra pass tonight, we did get off to two very good starts.”

Pacers Forward Danny Granger
(On good starts)

“Good starts are very important, we built the big lead early and then they cut it to eight at halftime and we came back out in the second half and built the lead right back up. Then I don’t think it got below 10 and that is really important for us and it is demoralizing for teams when they fight back. We’ve been in the situation where you cut the lead and cut the lead and then the other team hits a couple big shots and it is back to double-digits and we stopped that for them with the 8-0 run in the second half.”

(On getting road win)
“It has been tough for us on the road and we just haven’t been able to pull off many on the road. This was a great win for us, I mean Detroit is struggling, but they are a good team. We now have a great opportunity as we go home and play Philadelphia and then go on the road to Philadelphia. This win could be a good building block for us as we move forward.”

Pacers Guard Brandon Rush
(On his three point shooting)

“There was some good ball movement and I had the hot hand tonight and the guys were looking for me and I hit the shots.”

(On both lineups (big and small) playing well)
“I think a lot of it started with us shooting the three so well that everything was working so well. They didn’t get into the flow of the game and we were attacking the whole time, so it was definitely a good win for us.”

(On being 6-6 in 2010 and need to build consistency)
“We definitely need to play with consistency on both ends of the floor and we need to keep this going for tomorrow night.”

Reality Check: Pacers 105, Pistons 93
What Happened
:
Any momentum we thought the Pistons gained from Wednesday's win against the Celtics went right out the window with this atrocity against a not-very-good Pacers team. The Pistons lack of energy to start each half made all the difference tonight -- the Pacers went on a 14-0 run near the start of the first and started the third with an 11-0 run. The rest of the game was back-and-forth mediocrity. The Pacers hit nine three-pointers to the Pistons one and shot above 50% for most of the game (until garbage time), while Detroit was under 40%.

The Good:
Rip scored a game-high 27 points on 9-17 shooting, with five rebounds and three assists. He did have seven turnovers, but I tend to think his 27 points played a much bigger role in keeping the Pistons within 30 points tonight. Though the turnovers need to come down, it was encouraging to see him bounce back from a pretty awful game on Wednesday.

The Bad:
We could talk about Charlie Villanueva (1-9 shooting, minus-22 in 20 minutes) or maybe Rodney Stuckey (3-13 shooting, minus-25). The Pacers allow on average 104 points per game compared to their 99. You can pick two of our best scoring options as the bad or you can pick the defense. Either way, tonight's loss was the real 'bad.'

The Chuck Nevitt Unsung Hero:
Jonas Jerebko. He didn't have the gaudy numbers in the box score, but he played every second of his with the utmost effort and is deserving of some props here (and probably should have gone under "The Good"). He finished with 14 points on 7-12 shooting and seven rebounds off the bench. He also didn't back down from Danny Granger who was all hot and bothered by the rookie Swede actually playing hard.
