Manu thinks he'll become a free agent

Post#1 » by Nolan » Thu Jan 21, 2010 1:37 am

http://www.clarin.com/diario/2010/01/20/deportes/d-02123529.htm

This is coming from an interview with a paper in Argentina.

Here's a translation of part of the article:

"Im pretty sure I'll be a FA(...)and I don't expect to be resingned"

Are they giving you any signs?

"No there hasn't been any signs. The last one was before I got injured last year and after that there was no more talking on the subject. I don't know if it has much sense at this point".(sounds very casual about it, like doubtful). (He's saying this because of the 2010 offseason madness. Saying that the Spurs will probably wait to see what happens. Not because he didn't want to)
"It depends on what they'd offer me (giggle). But Im mentalized that on July 1st I'll sit down with my agent and wife and see where I continue my carreer"

You aren't any other Spur, you're kind of an idol there, does it hit you harder for that fact?

At the beginning yes, I thought the relationship was different, I guess I'm a little bit too much of a romantic. But that was last year, now I realized that this is a bussiness and nobody gives away anything, now I get it.

How do you see the team?

We aren't playing as good as we should, we should have 5 or 6 more wins by now, let's hope we can improve.

You won 3 'ships in 5 years, did you expect a let down of the team, do you think you're done as championship contenders?
No, I don't. Is very tough to be an NBA champion, ha ha. The fact that we didn't win one in two years doesn't mean we're done, there are lots of great teams that have never won a championship, anything can happen: injuries, last second shots, other teams just beign better, you can't be too cocky and expect to win it every year.

I love watching Manu play, his run in the '05 playoffs was just amazing (I think he should've got Finals MVP over TD).

But maybe it's time for him to move on. It would be tough to see him in another uniform though. He might be my all-time favourite Spur.

He is by far my fav spur. I hope we resign him but for MLE type money. He has definately lost a step and cant finish like he used to. The dude has a lot of miles on him what do you expect. But he has the heart of a champion. Never afraid of anyone and will battle to the end. I hope he retires a Spur and we hang his jersey in the rafters.

I hope we keep him too. He can still influence the outcome of a game when he's on, and he's a smart player. Plus I want to see him rocking a Larry David hairstyle out there.

 Manu seriously needs some rogaine.

I really want to see him stick around and retire a Spur. He might not be the Manu of old but he's still a very effective player off the bench.

Manu got a little bent out of shape when the Spurs haven't even talked about an extension. He was saying first time in his career he felt like this was a business. Spurs organization always tries to low ball its players. I remember when they tired to stiff D Rob. The guy pours his heart out there make him an offer that is more than reasonable. I know we are a small market team and have little room for error but Manu is soo valueable to the team way beyond on the court. Great locker room teammate and sells tickets and jerseys.

Do you think he would accept a package similar of what Dice took. MLE for 3 or 4 yrs?

He's worth more than the MLE in my opinion, and he'll be offered more than that from other teams. But if the FO lowballs him, I say he should take another deal. He's got kids to feed after all.

I'd say something around 6-8 million would be fair for Manu.

I said this in the other thread and I'll say it here..We need to trade Ginobili for the betterment of our team..We won't win with this small ball lineup that Pop uses out of necessity..It was embarrassing watching 6'8" Ariza abusing 6'2" Hill time and time again..Our front court is fundamentally flawed as is and our undersized back court isn't exactly relieving the pressure off of Duncan/Blair/Bonner/Dyess by poor rotations..Teams will continue to exploit our undersized back court until we correct the problem by adding a much needed competent backup SF in the mold of Shane Battier who can hound the opposing team's best perimeter player while knocking down that open 3..Also adding one more good defensive big wouldn't hurt either..I'm hoping for the sake of our championship window which is getting narrower by the second a Ginobili trade for defensive backup SF and defensive big man is in the works..

Battier has been on my wish list ever since he was drafted. He's slightly overrated now but he's still a great, smart player that doesn't care about his stats.

2 years at $10 million per I'd guess. That way he expires along with Duncan in 2 years and it keeps San Antonio a top 5 or 6 team for another two seasons.

If they let Manu go for nothing this summer it'd be a big mistake... The key is not really amount, but rather contract length. Don't sign him for more than 2 years unless its on the cheap.

It's all gonna depend on how we look in the playoffs.

The only way I see the Spurs keep Manu is if we got beat by the eventual Western Conference Champions (or NBA Champion) but it was a pretty close series. If we don't get beat up like a biaaatch then maybe the FO thinks we're good enough and put one more run at it. If we do get beat up, I don't see why the Spurs would keep the team intact. Rebuilding plans will be under way. My question then is how we deal with Tim Duncan. If he's not ready to retire and we start to rebuild, is possible that we trade Duncan for the betterment of the team and Duncan himself?

I think he's worth more than that...and I think he'll get offered more than that on the open market.

If the big name guys stay home, they'll be teams with money to spend... If the big name guys leave (Amare, Bosh, Lebron) then I could see no one offering more than MLE.

To TOR: M.Ginobli
To SAS: 2 of M.Bellinelli (23) (i.e. the young Ginobli), A.Wright (25) (i.e. "a much needed competent backup SF in the mold of Shane Battier who can hound the opposing team's best perimeter player"), A.Johnson (22) (i.e. "defensive big man"), or maybe even S.Weems (22).

thoughts?
