Is Ray Moving? I Say No Way

Post#1 » by Cyclical » Sun Jan 24, 2010 12:07 am

Forum Temperature Check...

I've read so many trade Ray topics over the past couple of weeks that I'm starting to think a lot of people believe he'll be moved by the trade deadline date. I'm no mind reader but I just don't see Danny making that move. Not a chance IMO. I don't see him disrupting the chemistry (perceived or real) of the starting 5 anytime before the off-season. Danny stated a 3-4 year window and that's what he'll give - no less than 3. Sure, Ray is on the decline but the expiring contract trade will be Scalabrine's - not his.

Not a chance he's getting moved. It would end this season's chances of winning the championship. IF we were to trade him, it would probably be a sign and trade this off season so at least we would still have training camp and everything to work with the new pieces. But that seems pretty unlikely.

I'd say 5% chance he's traded before the deadline, 5% chance he leaves in the offseason (by S&T or free agency), and 90% chance he's back in green next year. I'd be surprised if we moved him.

There is no doubt in my mind that Ainge would be willing to move Ray Allen in the right deal and that he is actively investigating those possibilities. However, I think that deal is unlikely.

I think the only "right deal" that Danny would move Ray for improves our starting line up or at worst keeps it equally as strong while making us younger. The players who have been rumored to be available who fit the bill would be Iggy, KMart, and Ellis. Obviously we would need to eat a bad contract as part of the deal and even that might not be enough to make it work. But to hell with chemistry if you can improve your talent and long term future that much in one trade you do it.

As for the summer I could see Danny's primary plan being a sign and trade with Ray / Davis / pick for a young talent. Even if it's not a wing player we could sign a shooter for the 2 guarrd with the MLE as Mike Miller, Jason Kapono, and Kyle Korver will all be free agents.

You have to say never say never but I would be very, very, very, very surprised if he was moved.

I think he'll stay and resign.

I guess it was a loud minority then. Isn't it always.

I'd put it at somewhere between possible and probable.

Ray's expiring contract is Danny's best chance to add one impact player or several cogs before his greyhounds (KG and Pierce) get too gray. After the trading deadline, his only options will be trying to resign Ray for cheap enough that he can convince ownership to spend the MLE again this offseason.
