Warning for using the word "Rapist"?

Post#1 » by Avenger » Mon Jan 25, 2010 7:14 pm

Is this actually a forum rule and if it is would any of the mods or admins please be kind enough to point it out in the TOS? and are there any other words that we are not allowed to use that don't get filtered out?

BTW, this word wasn't used in one of those 20 page Kobe vs X player arguments, so there was no baiting involved. it happened in the post game thread on the Raptors board, i was making a general point about Laker fans at the ACC? It was immature of me to use that word but where is the harm when i didn't use it in the context that is actually offensive?

Also, i would like to talk one of the admins about a suspension from about a year ago, i completely forgot about it until i saw my PM's again. What email address do i send my question to?

Avenger, for what it is worth there is no warning issued on your record regarding this event. I am not sure what context you used the word (which does make a difference). The word certainly is prone to ruffling feathers.

It was used in the Kobe Bryant context. Just noticed that the guy above me has the same issue with the same moderotor. Now i'm not as upset as the other guy but it seems to me like Yogistewart is the only user on this forum who gets offended by that word in a harmless context. I want to know if its actually realgm policy or if its one particular moderator applying his own set of rules. His exact words in the PM were "RGM does not tolerate the use of the word Rapist", i wanna know if that's true. Because if it is why don't the Admins just include that word in the language filter?

In context to Koby Bryant, RealGM does not tolerate that term for a few reasons.

First off it is slanderous and therefore libelous in the eyes of a court - a potential lawsuit.

Secondly, and this depends on what board you are on, but it can be seen as baiting LA or Kobe fans.

Avenger,
I sent you a PM because yours wasn't as ridiculous and rude and malicious as another poster's post.

the rape comment/warning stems from two things:
1. complaints about its use on other boards, among other names/terms being used to describe Kobe and LBJ (the latter not involving rape, just for your information)
2. a fair # of mysogynistic posts on the main board that made some posters feel uncomfortable

we're really trying to nip any inappropriate posts or posts that can be interpreted as inappropriate (but were posted in jest) in the butt.

I'm sorry, but that's one of the stupidest things I've ever read.

You moderate a message board, and are baiting someone that is borderline agreeing with a complaint against you. I might suggest that "good judgment" should sway you against that course of action.

your attempt to be a back-seat mod fails.
i am merely laughing at the irony of stating that something is stupid when one uses a word that is grammatically incorrect.
so nice suggestion and nice try.
stick to the subject at hand.

The open and constant use of the word rape (or it's derivatives) is one of the only things that drive me crazy on this board. I always have wondered why blatant racism is not excused (rightfully so), and yet blatant misogyny and homophobia are (or at least often are).
