Hey j2j, be careful who you start a war with.

You wouldn't want a mouth-breather to focus his vast mental energy on you, right?

So I'm wondering if a drastic drop in salaries would result in a drop in ticket prices as well. The projection for 5 yrs @ $12 Mil for STAT seems more realistic than $5-6 Mil. That number is just ridiculously low... I wonder which owner would say something like that?

You know, I'm a HUGE fan of me. Seems not everyone agrees. :-)

I just hope with his important music connections he doesn't raise the price of the CD's I don't buy from the Wal-Mart he works at.

And as far as who quoted STAT making that little, isn't it obvious? Rob Sarver, owner of the Phoenix Suns. :-)

Sarver.

It's ludicrous though. That's a 200% drop in salaries from where we were 3 years ago when a player like Amare would have definitely got the max.

I think this is good in a way. I think the players salaries are a little too high. STAT certainly doesn't deserve the max, and hell, maybe he still won't get it. I do think that the great thing about the NBA is that contracts are guaranteed, which really puts a strain on GM's and really was the reason McHale was so terrible. Why do I think it's a good thing when it directly hurts my favorite team? I dunno the answer to that.

If the NBA strikes I will seriously be pissed, cuz I'm not extreme enough to say "If you strike I'll never watch the NBA again" and plus that'd be a blatant lie.

If you think the cut is too drastic, take a look at the the situation over the last five years:

shrink wrote: For the five previous years, total NBA payroll has risen every year. The CBA increases the salary for rookies each year, and guaranteed raises also account for a rise. The major way to decrease salaries is through replacing players with cheaper alternatives, or giving the same player a cheaper deal. The changes?

2005-06 INCREASE $112 million
2006-07 INCREASE $61 million
2007-08 INCREASE $106 million
2008-09 INCREASE $100 million

.. so what happened this year?

2009-10 DECREASE $40 million!

Is a $140 million U-turn shocking? I think so.

Since the majority of players are on multi-year deals, the decrease is correlated with the new contracts that replace ones that ended in 2008 and 2009. I think you'll see an even greater decrease next year when we see the payrolls in 2010-11, with smaller contracts and several teams operating at a $55 mil cap and $65 mil lux, which will force most (not all) owners to be even more frugal with their new contracts.

Owners as a whole have already started to embrace the new economy, with more reasonable contracts the last few years. True superstars will still get paid, but if you're just a star, you're already seeing competition for your high-priced services dwindle. MIN's been very good about this the last three years. We didn't even offer Sessions the full MLE -- and he had to take it.

This trade deadline could be a bloodbath for fans, where many could see their favorite players dealt in Pau Gasol-type deals. Seven teams were recently mentioned that are actively looking for new buyers, or privately looking for better markets. A lock-out will have a major impact on the face of the NBA. It should be a very exciting trade deadline and summer.

Maybe we should save our cap money until 2011? Use our $10-$12 million to absorb one year deals while taking on assets in return. Our pick owed to the Clippers is still top 10 protected for another year.
