Pacers to buy-out Ford ?

Post#1 » by Grang33r » Wed Jan 27, 2010 11:11 pm

Per Real GM's Wire Tap.....

Chris Sheridan of ESPN.com writes that the Celtics could add a veteran player to their roster over the next month.

Boston could wait for a veteran to be bought out by his current team and Sheridan listed Keyon Dooling, T.J. Ford, Mark Blount, Tony Battie, Jarvis Hayes, Trenton Hassell as potential fits.

I heard O'Brien say they could trade Ford. Never heard anything about us buying him out. Would make sense. Chris Sheridan is usually pretty spot on.

If Bird could work it out, we can get comfortably under the luxury tax threshold for next season, which would be great for the franchise moving forward.

As I recall in the CBA FAQ, there is little to be gained for Ford in the option year. If he wants to play he has to sacrifice the 8.5 million he'd play under and move on. Think in some buyouts in the past, the player got little to no money in the option year.

I'd say if he's willing to forgo the option year, the Pacers should be willing to waive him and allow him to collect the remaining salary he's guaranteed. Let him sign a one year deal with a contender, and see if he can't get the MLE or near it this summer.

Well if he'd take 80% of this season and $2 million for next yr I'd buy him out today.

Hibbert is looking good. And if Rush can catch fire, i think we can win this. You can tell Rush is playing his heart out tonight. He's been every where. Just his shots arn't all going in. Atleast not in the beginning. Very impressive defense too by Rush.

Kenny Smith before the game said expect a massive game from Ron Artest. 2 points so far.

Hmm?

As of right now, that option year is essentially treated as guaranteed money, and that's certainly a LOT to gain for TJ. Do you honestly think he could sign an MLE deal this offseason? Really? For 3 years? Could he even get an Earl Watson type 1 year deal (roughly $3 million) after his past two seasons of production here? If he could SQUEAK that out, it would only take almost 3 seasons to make up what he would give up next year in a buyout.

TJ's not going to give up much of anything. Maybe $2-3 million next year, if he's supremely confident of signing elsewhere for close to that much and wants a better situation. At that point, I'm not sure it's worthwhile. Might as well give him another training camp under a new coach to see if he can regain some value. If not, waive him or buy him out then.

I'd rather hold onto him than buy him out. I mean he's not a bad teamate like Tinsley was. Plus, his expiring contract may hold some value next season.

Trade him to the Knicks (Donnie likes him), instead of Travis while they are in town.
