Pick & Roll
What happened to running the PnR with Gasol and Odom? Using Odom's and Gasol's passing ability after Kobe gets double was nearly unstoppable, Bynum isn't capable of making a pass out of...well...anything.

Re: Pick & Roll
Almost didn't notice this thread. I'm also worried about the Kobe - Pau PNR turning into a pick n pop at the FT line with Bynum in the middle. This play is our bread and butter in the playoffs and most coaches said last season that its the toughest to defend.

Re: Pick & Roll
I hope we go back to running the pick and roll because it worked well in the finals against the Magic and I should work wonders against the Cavs since Shaq can't gurad it at all.

Re: Pick & Roll
We're not really here to win 70 games. We're here to get 1st in the west, and then hit the finals with all of our tools. Logically we don't NEED to show our best stuff just yet. Save the best for last. While teams practice HARD and scramble to set up plays to defend our offense, we're developing new tools to become better. YOU DO NOT get better by winning a game. You get better by losing and understanding your flaws. Phil is a smart man... Our offense was basically only Kobe and Gasol last year... ( ok i'm not giving it enough credit _
Now it's slowly reaching new levels like from Odom to Bynum, Artest to Bynum. I'm seeing something GOLD here. I do feel that we lack the intangibles that Ariza gave us, but I feel that Brown is filling that role.

That theory is sound in principle but what happens when we experiment too much and then go into the playoffs on an uneven keel? I think there needs to be some balance in that. It's not like come playoff time you'll just outcoach someone by putting in this amazing new play or formation. Phil's been running the same scheme for the past 20 years and it's worked because team's know what's there yet can't stop it. The advanced scouting in the NBA is so deep that any team will be able to know what your going to run on every play before they even meet.

Re: Pick & Roll
Except for that one "special" play:
All the guys get in a circle and pass the ball around and sometimes fake out or no-look, with some jazzy music in the background, then Kobe peels off and starts dribbling real low to the ground, going around in circles while the defender chases him like a dog chasing the tail, then Odom sneaks up behind the defender and pull his shorts down causing hilarious laughter while Kobe fires a bullet pass from the 3 point line off the backboard to the other side of the court where Fisher snaps it up, and while all the defenders dumbfoundedly shift to that side, Bynum moves under the basket real low and puts Pau on his shoulders making a 12 foot tall guy with arms stretched upward to 15 feet. Fisher then lofts the ball toward the hoop and when the defenders turn to look the see the gigantic BynumPau collecting the pass, they jump harmlessly like little kids grabbing for candy as the Giant 15 ft Laker stuffs the ball through the rim for an unstoppable 2 points.
Cue music.
Sweet Georgia Shannon Brown.

Re: Pick & Roll
i thought the coaches let the players play, note down which plays worked and which plays didnt...
which plays were defended better or worse by oppositions and then mention it to the players when the 4th quarter comes around

Re: Pick & Roll
Which in theory is an extremely stupid way to coach but I can't argue with Phil's ten rings. I can argue with the fact that he's lost two titles though recently but not so much because of coaching during those title runs. It really seems like Phil doesn't care about home court. He's just seen his team win on the road a few times and believes they can do it again.
The one unbelievably effective play we saw a while back was Farmar-Gasol's pick and roll against Brooks-Yao in the playoffs. Any time you can move a C like Shaq and Yao around like that you cause that defense unbelievable trouble.
