Dark horse candidates for our next coach...

Post#1 » by Dunthreevy » Sat Jan 23, 2010 3:53 pm

I was hanging out with the ol' boy HookShotHibbert last night and he brought up someone that I hadn't even thought about, but makes a lot of sense as our next coach.

Clark Kellogg has GREAT knowledge of the game, he's got that old school mentality that will push the players to get down and dirty to do what's needed to win games, but he's still young enough to relate to this new generation of players. He's got great passion for the franchise as well. You can hear when he calls the games on FSI that he legitimately wants the team to succeed and isn't just sitting there calling a game. "HSH" did bring up a good point as far as trying to sign Kellogg though. Would he walk away from the money that he's seeing from doing the NCAA games, and does he WANT to be a coach? Personally, I'd love to see him patrolling the sidelines for our Pacers.

Another guy that I wouldn't be opposed to bringing in would be...

Monty Williams, former Spur and current Assistant coach in Portland. From what I read on ESPN Insider a while back, he's actually a dark-horse candidate for a few different head coaching positions around the league and there are more than a few teams keeping tabs on him. He did a great job with the Blazers this season while Nate McMillan was away from the team, and with all of their injuries that really says something.

The one thing I know for sure is that I don't want O'Brien as our Coach. Just thought I'd mention a couple of guys that we haven't discussed on here before, that could potentially be had for cheap and could turn out to be very good coaches if given the chance.

These are both great choices. Clark Kellogg actually "needs" the money a little more, though. His Pacers career was cut short before his big payday came in. Prior to that he was a 20-10 guy. Unfortunately, he was probably still on his rookie scale contract and over 5 years earned 2 mil, which isn't shabby, but then had nothing to make money with afterwards.

Yeah it stinks that Clark wasn't able to have as good a career as he could've. Damn knee injuries have a history with this team (Kellogg, Bender, O'Neal, Dunleavy). I assume he's probably making pretty decent money from CBS though, being their lead college hoops analyst, not to mention the money he's making doing the Pacers games on Fox Sports.

I would not mind to see Mark Jackson get a shot. Our worst part is the point and he could really help the young players such as A.J. ( Walls when we get 1st pick).

've tried to make a case for seeing if Bill Lainbeer would jump at the chance to be a head coach. I always hated him, but there's no doubt in my mind he would be exactly what our young bigs need...and he'd definitely bring a whole new perspective on things...

I'll still in Byron's camp. I don't think OB's extension will save him if we decide to make a move. I could care less about turning things around mid-season though as falling further in the lottery is just fine with me.
