Bastian: AA contemplating Damon? (twitter)

Post#1 » by OldNo7 » Fri Jan 29, 2010 3:06 am

AA: "We've got Lyle Overbay at 1B and our priority would be to have Adam Lind as more of a DH. That's why a guy like Damon has come up."

That quote from AA was in relation to the Jays discussing Delgado. He'd have to be a DH -- the spot AA would prefer Lind to remain in

Will there be a second call to Boras on Damon? Anthopoulos: "It's very hard to say right now."

AA: If Jays hadn't made commitment to John Buck, they would've looked more seriously at bringing back Rod Barajas, who is still a FA.

Cant we just save the money..
lets just really suck / let the young players play for a year / get high picks for a year..save the money and think about 2011..
Damon / Delgado are not going to make a difference..(except probably hurting our draft pick)

Not a chance,
Jay's management understands that fair weather fans (Like myself and the majority of the city of Toronto) would close the shades if this current Jays roster was playing in our backyard.

Tossing a few bones out there may actually get some of us to bother flipping to the baseball section of the paper, but much like with Chapman, Sheets, and any other free agent most of us folks who don't get excited about Single A prospects would get excited about, I am sure its just chatter that will amount to nothing.

First of all, Damon isnt going to spend the twilight of his career on a rebuilding team. Second, even if he was willing why would we commit any money to a 36 year old while the team is rebuilding? We could have just kept Scutaro for cheaper if we wanted an aging lead-off man.

I think it's best to see how bad (or good) these young guys play next year and then add FA's accordingly.

If AA signs Delgado and/or Damon for one year, he's essentially buying prospects, draft picks and time for his current prospects to grow. That's because if Delgado or Damon does well, they will get flipped to a contender (thus the reason why either of them would even contemplate playing for a rebuilding team like the Jays). Also, if they do REALLY well and the Jays keep them, then they become free agents, they could qualify, like Scutero and Barajas, as Type A or B FAs, which means high draft picks. Furthermore, for a perceived unattractive free agent market like Toronto (it's Canada), Toronto gets to keep control on their prospects at their positions another year longer (ie Brett Wallace and Travis Snider) and not rush them to this level.

Also, signing these players, at least, makes the team a little bit more "attractive" to the bandwagon fans because I don't think Toronto fans can stand a full rebuild. I'm thinking this because of the rushed jobs of rebuilding the other professional teams in Toronto seem to do ie the Leafs and the Raptors. Even the Argos, who seem to splurge on stupidity by signing a perceived "star" every year. There must be some reason to it.
Two years from being two years away.

You sign Damon and you could almost certainly trade him to a contender for prospects in the summer. So basically you'd be indirectly paying Damon to buy more prospects.

I'm not 100% sure this is AA's plan, but it would fit into the type of direction he seems to be moving.

Nurse is below average at best.
Masai is overrated.
