If I was Donald Sterling...

Post#1 » by clippermitch » Sat Jan 30, 2010 3:50 pm

I've been thinking a lot about this. Mostly due to the fact that I've been unable to sleep since we got killed by the freaking Nets and Twolves!

Anyways, the first thing I would do is fire Dunleavy as Coach and GM. The team has completely shut him off and Dunleavy's micro managing style has to go. Then, name Lucas the interim coach for the rest of the year and see how he does. If George Karl is available at the end of the year, I would make a big push for him to be the coach. I would even let him bring his own GM. I think his style can work with the players we have, specifically Baron.

Now to the players. We only have 7 players under contract next year so that means we have at least 8 roster spots to fill next year. But since I'm DTS, I'm only keeping Baron, Gordon, Blake, and DJ then do the following right now:

1. Trade Camby and Telfair to Cleveland for Big Z, Danny Green, and 2010 1st round pick. Big Z is an expiring contract and Danny Green has 1 year left but I doubt it is more than $1M a year. Danny Green is a winner, has good bball IQ, and plays hard. We probably get the last pick of the 1st round but it still has good value. Camby is rewarded for his hard work and professionalism by having a chance to win a ring with LeBron.

2. Trade Kaman and Al to Atlanta for Josh Smith and Jeff Teague. We get the athletic SF/PF that can defend and a young combo guard. Atlanta gets a legit C to play with Horford and Al gets to go home. Atlanta can now become a legit contender.

3. Let all our free agents walk at the end of the year which would leave us with

PG - Baron/Teague
SG - Gordon/Green
SF - Smith
PF - Blake/1st rounder
C - DJ/1st rounder

With our own first round pick (mid-lotto), we select a Center or PF. Cole Aldrich of Kansas or Demarcus Cousins of Kentucky.
With Cleveland's pick, we select a PF.
It looks like we don't have a second round pick (traded to Toronto)

This leaves us with 6 roster spots with a ton of cap space. We go after Lebron and Wade hard first.

What do you guys think?

Yea, its really depressing losing to the 2 weakest teams in the league. Dunleavy is a bad coach, but is not as bad as a GM. He's made some solid acquisitions since he's been the GM. If i was sterling, i'd relieve Dunleavy of his coaching duties but keep him as a GM. Make John Lucas interim coach, I like the Camby to Cleveland idea, but not the kaman trade. I'd say keep kaman and play him at the 4 while big Z at the center. Im guessing we'd get around 37 wins at season's end. We then hover around 10th to 13th overall in the NBA draft. We draft Wesley Johnson (SF) of Syracuse. With the Cavs' 1st, we draft Sherron Collins hopefully if he's available, to backup Baron. Re-sign Craig Smith to a 2 year deal. Sign Roger Mason for the MLE.

2010-2011 LA Clippers

PG. Baron Davis/Sherron Collins
SG. Eric Gordon/Roger Mason
SF. Al Thornton/Wesley Johnson
PF. Blake Griffin/Craig Smith
C. Chris Kaman/Deandre ordan

If I was Donald Sterling, I would fire Dunleavy, Sr. by the all-star break. This **** is stupid. The Clippers should've won the last 2 games, no question. Mediocre play is not acceptable.

If I was Donald Sterling.......I'd obviously fire Mike Dunleavy as our head coach. And I'd hire either of the following to be our next coach:

Then this team can finally start to take off.

My problem with Dunleavy is that he has not been bad in evaluating talent on an indivdual basis, but does not seem to have a concept of what kind of team he actually wants on the floor. Which I guess is fine since he micromanages everything anyway. No it's not fine, but anyhow...

This team is the opposite of 'dynamic', which is ironic considering the team Davis played on previously. But again, Dunleavy the micromanager probably didn't even notice. I feel like we're not getting nearly the best contribution from Baron Davis we could be getting.

I really like Chris Kaman, at the same time I wish DJ was a better defender and a couple of years better, and he would start instead. If we could get fair value for Kaman I would trade him.

It's really too bad there is not a good potential deal out there for Camby's expiring, packed with whatever else we got (other contracts, #1 picks, etc.) Caron Butler does not cut it (maybe 3 years ago would have been okay, not now.)

Finally, we really need a quality NBA starting SF. He can be a scorer or defender, just someone.

I don't watch enough games to really judge, but this team feels like a Frankenstein collection to me- the whole somehow comes out less than the sum of the parts. But we have talent, and considering we are close to .500 we could be a lot better next year (healthy Griffin, lottery pick again, a roster move or 2.)
