Think medium
Assumptions.
1) Pekovic comes over, signs a 3 year contract that pays him 4 mil his first year.
2) We have the same general team, minus the expirings.
3) We get all 3 draft picks. We take a Wing with our pick (Turner, Johnson?), a shot blocking big with Charlottes pick (Udoh, Alabi, Sanders?), and BPA with the 3rd pick.
4) We now have 9 million in cap space.
We have 11 players (including the 3 draft picks, not including Rubio) on the roster. Who do you sign with that money?

^If Brewer is still starting next year the team has done something wrong.
Maybe Mike Miller if he wants to come back although Outlaw wouldn't be a bad pickup. Really anyone that can shoot would be a solid addition.

I don't think so. A guy like Ronnie Brewer is starting in Utah too, Ariza, Sefolosha...
The way Brewer has played lately I don't have a headache if he's a starter. The important thing is that we need a scoring threat next to him.

Re: Think medium
I'd like Josh Childress though. He wasn't bad for the Hawks.
I don't know if it is realistic to pursue him because I believe he gets quite a lot of money in Greece. More than he could get here.

Nobody. Save the space for a trade, hopefully clearing some of the Timberwolves mediocre talent glut in the process.

I really wouldn't mind Azubuike on a 3 year, 12 mil deal personally. Leaves us with more cap space to trade if need be, and a developing young team.

But if the roster looks like (using your guidelines, and then plugging in prospects):
Flynn/Sessions
Turner/Ellington
Brewer/Gomes/James
Jefferson/Love
Pekovic/Alabi/Hollins
Where do you sign a player? Ellington and Hollins are the weak points there, but even if those two don't get minutes, all the PG minutes are used up, all the SF minutes are used up, all the PF minutes will be used up, and all of the C minutes will be used up. The few minutes left at SG could be cannibalized by Brewer sliding over to the 2-guard for a few minutes.
That's why I'm hoping the Timberwolves look to move CHA/UTA and another asset to move up, and also look to move Ellington/Gomes and especially Hollins if Pekovic is a Timberwolf.

Re: Think medium
under this scenario I'd rather trade one or both of the draft picks with expirings to get good, but financially committed talent. Then use the MLE for Pekovic. I think that works, but requires more financial commitment than Glen Taylor is comfortable with probably.

I don't really want to see a three-man rotation of Al/Love/Pekovic. We need length and athleticism in that third guy.

Just my opinion....but if the offensive philosophy changes....which it may or may not next season....Pek, AJ, and Love, if surrounded by a couple good shooters, would crush defenses in the paint. Obviously, Pek needs to be as good as advertised and Love needs to continue to expand his shot. But short/non athletic, however you want to classify that trio...they would simply crush any other frontcourt. Defensively, we'd still suck...but that also is completely dependent on how hard AJ and Love work this offseason on working on their D. I personally believe AJ has been noticeably better than last year in many ways, Defense included.

If Brewer keeps up his recent level of play, taking him out of the starting lineup would be wrong.
I'm down with Outlaw if he's cheap and we only draft one wing. The team could use a long, athletic combo forward that can create his own shot and stretch the floor.
"A while back,'' Cardinal said, "I took a picture of the standings and texted it to Love, just to bust his chops,'' Cardinal said. "He sent me a picture back of a snowdrift.''

It seems like some good players are really going to be available at a bargain price if we play things right. I would probably try to make a value signing for someone.
I would agree with Outlaw, Azuibuike, and Childress.
If NY somehow frees up cap space and signs two max guys, they would need to waive David Lee's Bird rights. It isn't exactly a position of need, but David Lee on a $7 mil deal may be very good value. Possibly keep an eye on Al Harrington also.
I would also keep my eye on the following as potential value signings:
Boozer, Tyrus Thomas, Scola, TMac, Prz, Manu, Felton, Will Bynum, Morrow, Frye, Foye, Mike Miller, Brendon Haywood, Ronnie Brewer
If no value signings are available, I would agree with this
and sign a couple min contract guys to fill out the rosterCasperkid23 wrote:Nobody. Save the space for a trade, hopefully clearing some of the Timberwolves mediocre talent glut in the process.

Re: Think medium
Trade Jefferson or Love for a good center and Peko would be a good 4-5 backup. Minnie can't continue with Jefferson playing at 5.

For the record, I was just making a visual of the scenario before free agency. Brewer would be an amazing 6th man, but would it affect his confidence?
