From GM and HC with the most prestigious franchise in the entire NFL to a college coach is a pretty massive step down.

Well they arent exactly a prestigious school. Sure they arent some Division 2 team but they arent a top flight team and dont have the history either.

If he didn't choke away the "4th & 26" game by
1) Going for it on 4th and Goal when he should've taken the points
2) Punting on 4th and 1 which led to yet another touchback
3) Vetoing the Donatell blitz on 4th and 26
we probably win that game and have an excellent chance at beating CAR and NE for the title, thus making Sherman one of the more fondly-remembered coaches in Packer history.
But instead, he choked that game away and provided us with great draft gems such as Fergie over Chambers, just because he was an A&M guy, and trading UP for a punter.
Fantastic. I could almost agree with the "Good coach-Bad GM" assessment, but the way he coached that Philly game just showed his total idiocy.

Being a natural contrarian I thought I'd take the position of defending Sherman a bit.
I think as a GM he's getting unfairly hammered.
He took Javon Walker and Nick Barnett in round one despite most thinking they went too high.
Dealt a 2nd rounder for Al Harris.
He found Aaron Kampman in the 5th, Corey Williams in the 6th round and Scott Wells in the 7th.
His huge misses include Ahmad Carroll, Joe Johnson and the trade up for BJ Sander.
More good than bad IMO.

That was a Wolf move. The 2001 draft was Ron's last. It also included the wonderful Jamal Reynolds.
2002 (Walker) was Sherman's first.

Ah, good call.
Don't you think that as a GM he's getting hammered unfairly, though?
He gutted this team. Other than a few exceptions and late bloomers, our roster was a mess.
Our defense was in shambles when he got fired as a GM and we lacked depth at numerous positions. His drafting was horrendous.

He hit some homeruns with Kampman, Walker, Willaims and Barnett, but when you look at his work as a whole he was pretty bad. About half of his picks are/were complete busts. The guy was pretty much hit or miss and he missed alot.
Someone over on the jsonline forums did a comparison of Sherman vs. TT in the draft:
http://www2.jsonline.com/idealbb/view.a ... sessionID={5441C99C-39A9-4722-9FC9-3F3EFB3F5F36}
I'll give Sherman credit for getting Harris, but as previously stated he also signed Joe Johnson, Clitoris, overpaid for KGB, actually resigned Ferguson, etc.
That's what really gets me upset. TT saw he made a mistake with Manuel and let his ass go, while Sherman actually gave Ferguson another contract and kept Sander on the roster.

I think his downfall as a drafter is what makes Thompson so good.
Sherman had no problems dealing up.
TT has had three drafts and made a total of 34 picks.
Sherman had three drafts and made a total of 21 picks.
If there was any problem with his drafts it was that he limited his own chances in finding talent.
