If Ray's available, is Perkins too?

Post#1 » by campybatman » Wed Feb 3, 2010 6:00 pm

This is interesting, I never thought that teams could be asking Ainge about Perkins. I wouldn't trade Perkins because his contract is a bargain for his current production. And I believe Perkins is one of the best centers in the eastern conference. I would only rank Brook Lopez and Bogut ahead of him. I don't view Dwight Howard, Horford or Bargnani as centers.

Rumblings about Ray Allen being on his way out of Boston are accurate, but only if the Celtics can get back a player who’d crack the top eight in their rotation. One scenario that has been discussed would have Allen going to Chicago for Kirk Hinrich and another piece – John Salmons? – to satisfy the salary requirements. If it came to fruition, what an intriguing swap it would be for teams that waged such a thrilling postseason battle only eight months ago. Since Allen’s $19.7 million contract expires after the season, acquiring him would leave Chicago flush with cap space for a 2010 free-agent binge centered around Chicago native Dwyane Wade and an additional superstar.

One of Allen’s teammates also is generating some interest: Kendrick Perkins, who’d be a perfect fit for a team like the Pistons, who are desperate for a post presence. But Perkins only makes $4.3 million, and it’s difficult to imagine the Celtics parting with him given the way Kevin Garnett is gimping around.

Perk better not be available. He's young and coming into his own on a great deal.

Celtics are desperate for a post presense. Using what logic would you trade the one post presense you have?

I laughed when I saw the Perk part. There's not a player on the Pistons I would trade Perk for. It just sounds like someone throwing sh*t at the wall.

I will be mad if we trade perk for reals nasty mean physical big men are extremely rare.
Even more than that imho he is a corner stone for our team just like rondo. And he is 25 and he will prolly play till 35 and not have much drop off.
Say what you want about championship caliber play now but we will be in the playoffs at various seeds while we have pek and rondo on our squad period that makes me a proud celtics fan. The two hardest positions to fill are the pg and center we have tested young players that play with passion at those spots we are in good shape.

i can see your point with horford and bargain ally but dwight is one of the best center ive seen in a long time he's a center dude...and horford plays mainly center right now but would be a great pf for sure.

Perk is not going anywhere unless they celtics get a decent center back in return.
Reggie stood out like a sore thumb no tattoos no agenda no chirping nothing Just a guy who could score at will He played college ball at Northeastern he replaced Larry as Celtics captain he belonged to Boston.
And I still miss him. Even now.

Perk came up in rumors this summer too, potentially with Memphis. They're supposedly looking for a vet defender - I'm sure you could swap Perk for Thabeet, maybe even get a first-rounder.. that's a win-later trade. But Perkins is a hard player to replace..

from CBlog.........

http://www.sbnation.com/2010/2/3/129051 ... e-iguodala

MAJOR PLAYERS
Boston Celtics

Status: Buyer
Team Weaknesses: Athleticism, perimeter depth, point guard depth
Projected 2010 cap room: $-11 million ($3 million under luxury tax)
Untouchables: Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Rajon Rondo, Kendrick Perkins
Potentially on the block: Glen Davis ($3 million this year, one more year)*,
Expiring Contracts: Ray Allen ($18.8 million), Brian Scalabrine ($3.4 million), Eddie House ($2.8 million), Tony Allen ($2.5 million), Marquis Daniels ($1.9 million)
Prospects: J.R. Giddens, Bill Walker
Good trade partners: Chicago, Detroit, Golden State, Milwaukee, New York, Philadelphia, Sacramento, Washington
Possible targets: Kirk Hinrich, John Salmons, Tayshaun Prince, Raja Bell, Monta Ellis, Luke Ridnour, Charlie Bell, Ramon Sessions, Kevin Martin, Andre Iguodala.

Ray Allen's expiring contract is officially on the market! This makes the Celtics a team that is a must-watch in the coming weeks. They've struggled so much recently that it appears Danny Ainge is resigned to the fact that the Celtics must get younger. Ainge is an extremely bold GM, so this is not just posturing. Don't believe him when he says there's nothing to this.

The difficulty of Ainge's quest, though, is that the Celtics can't just tank because of the vets the team already has. They can't just trade Ray Allen for young players; they need to trade Ray Allen essentially for a younger version of Ray Allen. Monta Ellis was one name that came up, but he doesn't fit in well with Boston's style of play. I think the Celtics would love to trade Allen for Sacramento's Kevin Martin, but Martin's not on the block. SB Nation's Celtics Blog and Liberty Ballers collaborated on a Allen/Andre Iguodala trade, but does Iguodala fit in well with Paul Pierce? Chicago could offer Kirk Hinrich, who the Celtics already tried to get (as covered in the Bulls section), and John Salmons, but is that a good enough return? This is the problem with trading Ray Allen now. He needs to be traded for someone really good, and how many really good players are out there that are better than Ray Allen?

Besides a Ray Allen trade, the Celtics also desperately need bench help, particularly at the point and on the wings. Andres Nocioni of Sacramento has been rumored to head to Boston several times, but he has a big contract. We already talked about Hinrich. Jeff Clark from SB Nation's Celtics Blog is enamored with Golden State's Raja Bell, but Bell's hurt now. Detroit could offer Tayshaun Prince, but Prince makes too much money. Milwaukee can offer Luke Ridnor and Charlie Bell, but the two combined make too much. Boston's only assets other than Allen are small expiring contracts and third-tier prospects. That could be enough to get them somebody, but nobody particularly great.

Either way, Boston went from a team likely out of the mix to one of the big players in just a couple weeks.

It seems a reasonable fan, other than Fuhrer Clark apparently, would at least know the health status of a player before one became "enamored" with him. Das Celticsbloggen is a freaking joke. They are like McDonald's of the blog-o-sphere. They are well-represented, are self-promoting to a fault and the quality sucks.

Please, if you are going to quote a "source" or provide exterior linkage on RealGM, anything that says "Jeff Clark" should automatically be 86'ed. Good gravy.

Ugh. I wouldn't like that trade, Perkins for Thabeet. He seems too much of a project and a player you would need to be patient with. Boston is a contending team that must win now. I don't even want to consider a player like Thabeet unless Boston was a young and rebuilding team.

Roy Hibbert is becoming a decent center so Thabeet could as well or he could be a Priest Lauderdale. For this reason, I tend to be wary of these extra tall (over 7'1'') centers becoming anything more than a serviceable player. I mean the draft seldom produces a Rik Smits, Dikembe Mutombo, Zydrunas Ilgauskas or Yao Ming.

I would do Perk and Ray for Duncan. I believe the Spurs would have cap room to go after a max guy. They'll never trade him, but that group's done so maybe they should. Perk and Bosh would be a pretty good way to start over.

Perk has been one of the best values in the league the last couple years. That may go in the opposite direction once he gets a new contract. But if you still want to be a team with an emphasis on defense after the Big 3 era, not a chance you trade Perk unless it's a package for someone really, really good.

How can you possibly not consider Howard a center?

Return to Boston Celtics
