Based off the rumor that Boston wants Hinrich and the theory that Chicago wants to get as far under the cap as possible for a major FA run this year. The protected 1st from BOS might be overkill.

Why for Min- Get a young, quality player at a position of need, pick up two 1sts for taking on his contract. Potentially gives us 5 1st rounders this year, which should allow Kahn to garner a lot of attention on draft day, and gives us the ammo to move up as we see fit.

Why for CHI- Sessions and Gomes are potentially suitable enough replacements for Deng and Hinrich that they can make the playoffs this year, all but about $5 million of the Deng/Hinrich contracts is cleared from next year's salary number (if they cut Gomes), and they have the chance to try and build a Super Team in FA next year.

Why for Bos- Were reportedly willing to give up straight expirings for Hinrich, this is expirings + late 1st for Hinrich and Hollins. Hinrich steps in as 3rd guard/defensive specialist, Hollins rides the pine, maybe surprises in a playoff game due to athleticism and the attention paid to Rondo/Pierce/KG.

I'm not sure if I like Deng these days, never evolved into a difference maker. At least w/ Gay or Kevin Martin I can envision them as a difference maker if some variables all fall into place, but Deng has no chance, he's just a good role player. I don't like him at that salary

I just think Deng and Hinrich are overpaid, so those extra years just don't excite me. I think we may be close to getting later picks for Gomes and Sessions without using our cap space.

For people that like Deng and Hinrich though, I applaud a well-designed trade.

I'm not totally against this but Deng is about 3rd or 4th on my list of potential vet SF additions so I'd prefer to wait until other options are off the table, which would probably negate this deal.

I see no reason for Chicago to give up a 1st in this deal, and that BOS 1st probably should either go to Chicago or not be delivered at all

Deng is a good player, Hinrich is a solid player. Just because they are each overpaid slightly and have contracts which run post-2010 doesn't mean they are negative assets as they are being treated here. Sure, few teams would go out and try to acquire each player in a deal, but as it is they are worth more than expirings and fodder, which is basically what they're getting here. Gomes is decent, Sessions is decent; but with Chicago getting those two they are greatly hurting their playoff chances. It's a relatively even trade for Chicago without the pick involved is what I'm getting at, and if I were to side on it being unfair or too good for them, I'd say it's still unfair.

Minnesota is hardly hurting their 2010 cap space (about 1.75mil) and acquiring a good player in Deng for relative peanuts. Does it hurt them down the line? Yes, but they weren't likely to have room in any of those years anyway, so it only has tax implications - and as a Deng fan I'm confident he can keep up his recent play for the remainder of his contract, if not improve upon it. I absolutely do the deal even without the picks.

Boston gets a decent deal, but this kills their depth, making them hope for buyouts and minimum pickups after the deadline. They'd be relying on Walker or Giddens to play spot minutes if anyone gets in foul trouble or is injured in the back court. Again, I don't think a pick is required out of them because of the risk and taking on Hinrich's contract.


I do like the base of the deal, however (Min - Deng; Chi - space, assets; Bos - Hinrich) just think it needs tweaks.

This actually isn't a bad trade for the Wolves. The difference between the contracts of Sessions/Hollins/Gomes' unguar and what Deng makes is made up by the Chicago and Boston picks. Although I don't see the need for adding a 4th and 5th pick in the 2010 draft. If we can defer the Boston pick to 2011, that would be nice.

No chance Chicago does it, though. They've been rolling as of late. 13-5 since Hinrich was put in the starting line-up.

13-6 actually, seems like a total tailspin, probably need some Gomes mojo, to pull out of it.

I think Casper's right in that it's a little too good for the Wolves. BOS 1st is overkill, but hey, shoot for the moon and even if you fall short you land amongst the stars. It does kill their depth on the wing. The deal could also work with any two of Giddens/Walker/Landlord replacing either Tony Allen or Marquis Daniels.

I do think (or hope) CHI would have to toss a 1st in (protection could be made heavy, it isn't important we get the 1st in this draft), since they're shedding about $15 million next year, and we'd be taking on the $50+ million that Deng is owed over 4 more years. I think Rose/Salmons/Gomes/Gibson/Noah with Sessions/Thomas/Miller/Brown/Johnson/Pargo off the bench still beats out Milwaukee and New York for a playoff spot. The only way they do it, though, is if they've decided the chance to go balls to the wall in FA this summer and bring in a couple max FA's is more appealing than Deng + max FA.

Owners are going to be very careful taking on contracts with the looming possibility of a labor stopage. I've heard that the owners want to seriously reduce the players' share of the revenue to about 45%. There are several teams that are not filling their home arenas and have little room to operate.

Deng might be overpaid, but he's a good player and there's plenty of uncertainty about some of the other names we're hoping we could acquire in trade or free agency as well, in addition to us even being able to get them here.

youve gotta say gomes and sessions are the only guys with any value in this deal, and theyre only backups and depth players on any good team, with hollins and cardinal being the garbage that would be waived

maybe one 1st round pick or deng would be about the best you could ask for in a deal for gomes and sessions
