Deadline deal with Miami

Post#1 » by drivewayball » Sat Feb 6, 2010 5:50 pm

Boozer (exp 12.6) and Okur (9.0) for Jermain O'Neal (23.0 exp) and Joel Anthony ($835 exp.). Deal requires Anthony's approval.

Why for the Jazz? Takes Utah's payroll down by $2.2 million this year and takes Okur's contract off the books for the future. O'Neal's offensive numbers match Okur, but his defense is better. Anthony is a shot-blocking menace for 15 minutes a game at center. Gives Kirilenko and Millsap Boozer's minutes.

Why for the Heat? Gives the team much needed offensive weapons to make the team more competitive in a season that is on the brink of tanking. Provides a chance to look at how Boozer works in the lineup. If they can get Bosh or James in the offseason, they can simply let Boozer walk.

No, this deal makes us substantially worse this season, and not any better next year.......

This would be a financial only deal. We can find a million deals like this one. I'm open to this possibility, but only if we get some serious sweetener in return. At least one 1st with minimal protection and throw in Mario Chalmers. Then I'd be ok with it.

JO is dead man walking, though, and Anthony is a bit player, though a usable one.

O'neal is a declining star. I haven't seen anything special about him in the past 4 years. No way do we trade Boozer, who is a somewhat rising talent, for a washed up thug.

The only reason I'd do a deal to get out of Okur's (actually reasonable) contract is to make re-signing Boozer easier.

Trading both of them for nothing makes little sense.

Nope, they got good just in time that saving a few million at the cost of competitiveness is a wash. Getting to the WCF would easily make up any monetary loss by sticking with this squad.

Seriously? O'neal is washed up, Okur is more servicable at this point. We're giving away Boozer for nothing, I rather keep him and see if we resign him than loosing him for Joel Anthony. JO is a free agent, so basically he is at the liberty of walking at the end of the season. So this is a salary dump for two guys who have been playing well. Okur has been great at home, and playing great defense. Boozer is back to his All-Star shape after a slow start. You don't usually put good players on clearance, so no thanks.
