It's easier for them though cuz they have tradeable assets. Detroit simply don't besides other draft picks. NE is a team that stockpiles trades but they usually do it having players involved.

Re: 2010 Draft prospects
I want Suh or McCoy at #2. I would prefer McCoy because he will be more of a pass rushing threat inside and I think Schwartz can do a lot with that, a la Haynesworth. I wouldn't be opposed to falling back a little and getting Joe Haden, who I believe is going to be a star at CB. This team needs stars and the odds are better in the top ten than accumulating more later. I get the need for more quality across the board like Bartender is saying, but I want more top-heavy impact.
As far as teams looking up, it would really help if STL took a QB at #1 because I know there are teams that will move to get Suh and/or McCoy. Everyone knows the Lions and Bucs aren't going QB and are looking at DL so if a team wanted one of those two they have to move there. Plus:
1. Not many people believe the Rams are going to go QB at #1 and
2. Unless Jimmy Clausen wows people in Indy and in workouts, no QB is worthy of going #1. You'll see some Bradford chatter but I'm not buying that at all, and a couple of the people who are spouting that know better.

Im excited for McCoy, whom i feel is the most likely player by a mile to be a Lion in April. He is really gunna bring something to the Defense.
And like you said, STL going QB is the greatest thing that could ever happen to us. Either we get to chose our future defensive stud or trade down for great value. Teams will overpay to move up for Suh. God i hope Bradford wows at the combine or his pro day

"In the year 2010"...
St. Louis will chicken out on taking a DL player after taking an OL and DL player really high recently, so they will look for a Public Relations Sanctuary via drafting a QB; Sam Bradford will be that guy. The Lions will then choose between Suh or McCoy or a trade down. I'm hoping for the trade down cause I think the price will be nice. Next case?

What you laid out is a very legit prospect. It will be interesting to see how much their new owner meddles in the draft process. Most new owners like to make a splash and that equals QB, which means the Lions will have a very interesting decision.
There is absolutely ZERO chance of trading down. This will be the last overpaid 1st round and nobody wants to be saddled with those kinds of contracts, not even Jerry Jones or Dan Snyder. Don't forget that last year teams were asking the Lions for compensation for trading up to #1, not the other way around as you would think. The contracts make movement virtually impossible. Some team might go gaga over CJ Spiller or Joe Haden and try to get up but they know they don't need to get to #2 to do it. It sucks but that what comes with being terrible for so long.

Re: 2010 Draft prospects
Wow I totally have to disagree with you on the lack of a trade down chance. I think there is a decent chance. Every player in the first round and the entire draft for that matter is overpaid. But if we trade down to say 10, well the amount that the team that has the 10th pick that they have to overpay on that 10th pick is there too, so you only have to worry about the gap from 10 to 2, which is a lot of money, but not necessarily enough to block a trade. Basically, the amount paid to the 10th player is sunk on that team' mind, since they intend to use the 10th pick if they can't trade with us. It's not inconceivable at all that they would pay the gap from 10 to 2 in order to get a premium pick. There's a huge dropoff at 10 from 2 in terms of the type of player you can acquire, if you happen to look at it that way, which the team trading up would have to look at it as in order for a trade to be realized. So as long as that is there, then chances should be favorable that a trade could happen, and certainly not a ZERO chance no matter what the situation is. Add in the fact that half the teams in the NFL are extremely stupid at the Front Office level and anything can happen.

Re: 2010 Draft prospects
I think it's amusing that the whole time Suh was expected to go to the Rams at #1, he was far and away the best prospect (no argument here), but as soon as more people get behind the idea that the Rams could take a QB at #1, suddenly Gerald McCoy is better, when Suh could drop to #2?
It's not even you Icness because I know you've liked McCoy for awhile, but suddenly Todd McShay switched his mock to have the Rams take a QB and Suh falling to the Lions and suddenly ESPN is suggesting that McCoy suddenly, out of the blue, is a better prospect. It makes me wonder how they got to that line of thinking, all of sudden when the Lions have a legit chance at getting the best guy in the draft and arguably the best defensive lineman the draft has seen in years.

It's not who's better... it's the needs of the team. If you need a run gap stuffing player, Suh is your man. If you need a QB penetrator and a guy that will rush the QB out of the pocket every time, McCoy is your man.

The big difference for me preferring McCoy is that I know what he is going to be in the NFL: the next Tommie Harris, a 3-technique penetrator. I think Suh is going to be great, but I'm not quite sure what he is--is he an under tackle, is he a 3-4 end, is he a 4-3 nose?
I think the change by McShay and some others is more of a realization on Suh than anything McCoy has done. He had some pretty good pieces around him at Nebraska and they geared their entire defense to make him shine. That's a lot easier to do in college than the NFL. That's not me saying he can't dominate in the NFL, but it won't be so easy. There's a bit more risk with him than I think most people thought there was after his fantastic finish.
Regarding the Dorsey deal--that was just one scenario. I heard it could be as simple as Dorsey and #4 for #2 and a later Lions pick, or it could involve Peterson, DeWayne White, Avril, Derrick Johnson, Brandon Carr, or any number of things. I suspect they'll iron it out in Indy next week, though you might not hear it until draft day.

Re: 2010 Draft prospects
So it's not a 2nd, 6th and Peterson for Dorsey and a 4th? it could be the picks or players? I have no problme moving JP, but I have a problem moving him for an unproven player when we're downgrading a damn good pick.
I liked Dorsey is college, but he hasn't really made the transition to the NFL. Maybe it is about switching positions. Maybe it's not. I'm not sure moving good picks to find out if in our best interest right now.

Re: 2010 Draft prospects
Dorsey has been doing fine. He had 54 tackles this year as a 3-4 DE. That's the same amount as Brett Keisel (Steelers 3-4 DE... one of the best in the game).
The one game he missed, Jerome Harrison torched KC for 287 yards. He was a big deal for that defense.
2 things I love about this trade that has to do with management:
1. We get rid of Peterson's awful contract
2. We only have to pay Dorsey's yearly earnings. KC still has to pay all the guaranteed money, so we're only paying half of his contract.
What a beauty.

McCluster's draft stock is raising through the roof. Seems like he's not an option for us anymore.

Re: 2010 Draft prospects
He's still espected to go mid 3rd in the mocks I've seen. He'd be available at the top of the 3rd... but will the Lions use that pick on a RB?
I've been messing around with some ideas and I wouldn't mind picking up LeGarrette Blount in the 5th round. I know the Lions coaching staff liked him at the Senior Bowl.

Re: 2010 Draft prospects
If we get a RB in the first 3 rounds, I'd want Ryan Mathews. That's it.
And an ESPN article I read said that McCluster could go from late 1st to late 2nd with how high his stock is rising.

Re: 2010 Draft prospects
Agree that Mathews could be a good pick.
According to Kiper/McShay, Gerhart's stock is falling a bit right now. They both rank him outside their top-5 RB's in the draft.
Any way Arrelious Benn falls to us in the 2nd round? Hate to take another WR that high, but his size/speed would be tempting in the 2nd....negates going after some of the blah WRs available in free agency.
