A few observations from a fan in attendance...

Post#1 » by Timberpups » Mon Feb 8, 2010 6:17 pm

Long time reader, very infrequent poster (plan to change that). I've been to quite a few games this season, sitting courtside for 2 (early win against Utah and loss to Orlando). Thought I would chime in a few thoughts from my time spent at the Target Center this year...

-Although there are quite a few empty seats, the place gets surprisingly loud. The million dollar acoustic renovation might have something to do with it, but regardless, it's encouraging to hear. I've been to the last 3 home games (and will be going this Friday, as I superstitiously attribute my attendance to the little winning streak we have going), and the volume of the place has been especially noticeable.
-We go early to the games to watch the pregame shoot around (and watch Natalie Kane on the jumbotron screen), and when we can peel our eyes off of her to notice, it seems like Brewer does not miss during the shoot around. Another Stewie and Games always play a little one-on-one warm-up during this time.
-Ryan Hollins, whether he is starting or not, gives high-fives to everyone on the bench (Glen Taylor and his crew included). I love watching that.
-During the win against Memphis, we noticed that Sessions played a lot more than Flynn in the 2nd half. Rambis said in the post game news conference that Flynn told him that Sessions was playing too well to take out, and that he should not put him in the game to replace him. Absolutely love hearing that. Flynn was going crazy on the bench cheering during the 4th quarter (looked like a little kid), and when Love hit that 3 near the end of the game, Flynn was the first to run out to him and gave him a jumping bear hug. It was fantastic.
-And when love went down clutching his knee in the Memphis game, I immediately thought that the Timberwolves year 2 knee injury curse was more real than it's Madden counterpart. After he had been back in the locker room for a while, I turned to my buddy and said "Watch Love come running out of that tunnel with a Willis Reed/Paul Pierce like comeback and we win this game." Sure enough, not 1 minute later, Love came jogging out of the tunnel. Nailed it...

What did you have to pay to get courtside? (if you don't mind me asking)

Cool to hear that Brewer doesn't miss in shoot around :D
I love how he has progressed under Rambis and it's nice to hear that Flynn wants to win even if that means riding the bench sometimes 8-)

Don't hesitate to post more Timberpups. I love those fan game reports because I haven't got the opportunity to go to Wolves games here in Europe

I (am very fortunate to) know someone who gets tickets every now and again and passes them along. He's not a big basketball fan, knows that I am, so he tosses them my way. Not that anyone would turn them down, but if you get the opportunity to watch from the first few rows, definitely take advantage of it. It's incredible, and you get a whole new appreciation of how athletic these guys are and how fast the game moves.

A few courtside observations...
-Dwight Howard is HUGE. This isn't breaking news or anything, but wow. I was standing in the tunnel behind the basket when he came in at half time, and he walked right by me. Guy is a monster.
-Was sitting in the corner right by the Magic bench for the Orlando game, and Vince Carter was giving Matt Barnes grief because the ref was trying to hand him the ball to throw it in, but he was too busy looking at the cheerleaders to notice.
-Either Brandon Bass or Adonal Foyle (couldn't tell, never took off his warm-up) was heckling Mike Rylander (one of the Wolves MCs) the whole game, calling him Wally Szczerbiak, asking if that was the closest he could get to being back in the league, etc... Thought it was funny coming from the guy who couldn't get off the bench or even bother to take his warm-up off.

It is fun to watch some of the pregame rituals of these guys. Not only does Hollins high-five everyone, he has to do it in a row. If Glen Taylor is talking with someone, Hollins will wait until Glen is "freed up" to high-five before he goes on to the next person.

After Gomes takes off his warm up jacket he flips it over his head to a certain ball boy. Al usually goes 1 on 1 with Wilkens. Brewer just hangs around on the 3pt line and drains shot after shot. Pecherov is like the new Mark Madsen cheering on the bench. If he gets in the game the crowd cheers for him - unlike the groan that happens when Sasha goes in.

We don't sit courtside - we're at mid-court 1/2 way up - some players look huge from there. Some look relatively small (Jonny Flynn) in comparison to the others - sometimes it's hard to believe he is supposed to be 6' tall.
I've been a fan since the beginning and I will be until my end.

At least they didn't shuriken him with a dorito.

Wally needs to lay off the Doritos, he's let himself go.

If you mean the Wally look alike - I agree. He's put on a few over the last 18 months.

I sat in the 2nd row and the seats cost $260 each, but my roommate had connections so the only expense I had was beer

I think Flynn is already a great teammate. His personality alone could help out any team. I remember one game in which Flynn was playing lousy, so he was sitting on the bench for the better half. When the wolves started making a comeback, the TV camera switched to the bench, and Flynn was laying sprawled out over 3 seats (with players sitting in them) just screaming something at Bill Lambeer. Hilarious. I sort of hope Nate is too injured to compete in the dunk contest and Flynn is the last second replacement.

What about the other benchwarmers like Jawai and Cardinal, any quirky news on them?

Thank you for mentioning Natalie Kane, I never knew her name until now. She looks way better in person.
