Why do people want Kevin Martin?

Post#1 » by Shocker00 » Wed Feb 10, 2010 3:05 am

It seems like Sacto wants too much for him. And Wesley Mathhews has better stats.

Kevin Martin MPG 36.6 FG% 38.4 3p% 36.3
Wesley Matthews MPG 22.0 FG% 46.3 3p% 36.0

Wesley Matthews is much cheaper and is a lot better defensive player than Kevin Martin. Maybe I am just missing something here. It just seems to me that if Matthews played the same amount of minutes as KMart and you ran a couple more plays thru him then Matthews would average just as many points if not more per game

People don't want him for his defense. They want him for his offense. He is the go to primary guy on the Sacramento. Take off most of the pressure on him and some people think that he will shine even more. He can create his own shot, which we don't really have. Plus add Deron into the mix, who can help him get even better shots.

Comparing Matthews stats to an injury riddled season of Martins stats is laughable.....if youre going to even entertain the thought that Matthews is better, youve never watched Martin play. I just watched him take over in overtime and get the win in NY, I'd love to have him on our team for the right price.

And if you want numbers, look at what he did to us the other night.

Last I checked we are the number one fg% team in the nba. We our also around 24th defensively. Doesnt it make more sense to get better defensively rather than worse? Why do we need to get better offensively? To me it makes more sense to get someone that can Guard Gasol who shoots like 75% against us in the playoffs the last two years. To me it just seems all Utah fans want is offense and more offense and lets just forget the defense aspect of the game. This is just my opinion

Where do you get the number 24 from? I heard David Locke the other day say we were in the top 10 or something in defense. What numbers are you using?

Actually, I have watched Martin play a lot and his defense absolutely sucks. Which prolific big man are you willing to trade for him? Thats what Sacto wants in return. Kmart might be a lot better than Matthews offensively but I guarantee you that Matthews is much better defensively. There is more to a game than just offense. I think Kmart is the right person if we want to get weaker defensively and stronger offensively. Since we our number one offensively already I would rather us improve on our defense which is 24th in the league.

If you goto Nba com and look at team stats and click on defense you will see the jazz are 24th in the league on defense.

Im not sure what number they are using on their site, but it isnt ppg, or points per 100 posessions.

Youre looking at the game far too simply. There are other ways to impose your will on the other team, aside from "getting better offensively but worse defensively".

If you have a legit threat at every position, which right now we dont with Brewer out there, you force the other team into thinking like you do.....substituting their better offensive players for better defensive ones, therefore making your defensive players meaningless. Like the Jazz of the 90's, their best defense was their offensive juggernaut. At this point, with the make up of the team, with the amount of offenive weapons we have it seems silly to try to turn it into a defensive team by adding just one guy...it wouldnt work. In the mean time we only have one glaring offensive hole to fill, thats what we should try to do.

Because every playoff series what suffers our O or are D? Look at SA the WCF year and the Lakers the last two we have struggled on O in the playoffs because the lack of a consistent 3rd scorer. Ideally you would like the Jazz to get someone like Martin and a big to bang with Bynum, but I see the Jazz having a better chance to succeed with Martin than any "D" player we could get.

Martin is over-rated and over-paid.

Because he's a very similar player to Jeff Hornacek, and the Jazz have an all-star playing at the PG position and the PF position... sound familiar?

Martin puts up those numbers even as defenses specifically plan for him, so the thought is, if he were on the jazz teams would leave him more open to guard dwill, boozer...etc or vise-versa. I think he is a very good offensive player, who doesn't even think about playing defense. I personally don't think the jazz need more scorers, and they need more defensive minded players.

If anyone is curious. Look at their defensive and offensive rating to see how similar they really are.

Jeff Hornacek's Defensive Rating for 4 years leading up to joining the Jazz.

106
108
107
111
_____

Avg: 108

His Offensive Rating before joining the Jazz.

121
122
120
110
_____

Avg: 118.25

Kevin Martin's Defensive Rating over the past 4 years.

107
109
112
117
_____

Avg: 111.25

His Offensive Rating over the past 4 years.

116
120
121
115
_____

Avg. 118

Horny's DRtg: 108 ORtg: 118.25
Martin's DRtg: 111.25 ORtg: 118

There is a 3 point differential per 100 possessions between them defensively. Essentially for every 100 possessions there is an extra three pointer made. That's the only difference between Horny and Kevin Martin. So for everyone saying he's the worst defender in the league, realize he brings almost exactly what Hornacek brought. And I'm willing to say he's a better athlete and is a better pure scorer than Jeff ever was.

He'd be amazing on this team.

While Martin is the better athlete, your selling Hornacek short. Jeff was one of the best pure shooters ever in the NBA. Here are their career numbers.

Jeff .496%fg, .403%3p, and .877%ft
Kevin .449%fg, .387%3p, and .851%ft

I like Martin but it seems like he is always hurt.

He does have big injury concerns. The hope would be that if he wasn't being asked to be the first option he wouldn't have to put his body through so much.

Who knows?

I've kind of soured on Martin. I'd like a Mike Miller-Haywood deal. Or really anybody that's not afraid to get physical and bang down low.
