Caron Butler's Strengths and Weaknesses?

Post#1 » by PrettyEdward » Wed Feb 10, 2010 11:05 am

I'm a Houston Rockets fan and with all the trade speculation going on around Caron Butler coming to the Rockets, can someone tell me what are his strengths and weaknesses. Thanks

Not a tweener. Above average in almost everything, including passing and defense. Excellent mid-range shooter and foul shooter. Good at driving and absorbing contact. When this situation wasn't a nightmare, he would consistently show up and bring the toughness and energy (and has the last couple games).

Negatives: Not a star player on either side of the court. Average three point shooter. Will often jaw to the refs and not get back on defense (my biggest pet peeve).

In addition:

He's a fantastic defensive rebounder, not just in what he gets but as far as team rebounds.

More effective when he's asked to initiate the offense from 'his spots'; isolations and some post ups. Less effective when he's asked to defer or catch and shoot.

Needs shots and needs the ball, though can create for others within that context.

He will dominate in Houston.

They have no scorers there at all.

Maybe Brooks, who isnt even that good.

He's also a very good offensive rebounder for his size.

loves to isolate. his go to move is a pump fake or jab step which normally fools no one. used to be a very consistent mid range shooter but has struggled ths year. used to be a very willing passer but his assist ratio this year has been down. he is a great slasher and gets to the rim easily but isnt the best finisher. half of his drives result in an air ball layup but he never gives up on the play resulting in a tip in or follow layup finish by him. seems like a good guy and someone the other players like to have in the locker room. he would be a great fit in houston.

Good summary of his offensive pluses and minuses. It remains to be seen, but some of his problems this year may be tied to his adjustment to the current system, but his shooting %, PPG, and APG are trneding upward after a horrible start. His defense this year is clearly better; he's applying consistent focus and effort to the skills he already showed in flashes, and he he's currently a better-than-average defender. His play of late has made me like the idea of keeping him unless the offer brings back a pick or a good young player.

One plus that has not been mentioned is he is a very good free throw shooter.

One negative is he has a tendency to force a contested jump shot rather than passing to a teammate in a better situation.

Sounds like he would fit well in blue uniform.
