Gooden is an expiring and this clears up salary for the Clippers to offer max/near max money to a free-agent in the summer.

Only Griffin, Gordon, Kaman, Baron, DJ and a potential first round Draft pick would be committed salaries.

This move will free up over $5.5M for us to spend.

We could've at least gotten a 2nd rounder even a future one

in two days we gave Thornton, Telfair and Camby for pure expiring contracts whom we have no intention to resign and have no chance of making playoffs.

If it were to be a first it would eat up cap space with a cap hold.

So basically the Clippers traded Thornton, Skinner AND Telfair for Drew Gooden?! The Clippers are now in full tank mode. Horrible trades the last couple of days.

It's for free agency this off season. I don't know if I'd call this one horrible. The Camby one definitely is, but we get rid of Thornton's contract, and there was no doubt Telfair was going to accept his option for next season. If we can get some good players this coming off season then I'll give Dunleavy his props, right now I'm in the gray area until I see the results of the cap space we have.

The Clips plan to buyout Drew Gooden's contract and allow him to become a Free Agent.

Fantastic trade, getting rid of three counter-productive scrubs for cap space. Blake and Trout (injured or not) are huge upgrades over Welfair and Thornton.

Not a bad trade I guess. It does however make the team pretty much unwatchable for the rest of the season.

Knicks' fan here. I read about this trade and had to come onto the forum to see if it was really true. I truly feel for you guys who stick by your team with the ownership that you have. Trust me, I empathize. I thought that Thornton was a talented player. Did you guys think he (and Telfair) were going to be parts of your future?

Will Sterling ever sell this team?

EDIT: I read something on the Knicks forum that you guys and now lining yourselves up to get a MAX FA. Good luck. Please make Kobe and the Lakers the "second" best team in LA.

Again we don't need to sign a max player we need to get assests that could help us next season. We get some young hungry talent in here and things could look better this is poor direction by the franchise. We gave up a lotto player for trash

I don't mind the trade at all, but I do feel that we could have gotten some type of pick compensation from trading Thornton and Telfair. But clearing more $ means more $ to spend come the Summer of 2010.

The ability to sign a max FA and pair him with Boom, Gordon, Blake Griffin, and Kaman sounds very enticing to me.

Feel for you guys. Understand the FA thing, but these Camby, Thornton moves are "sell low". At least some 2nds?

Of the FA's out there, Bosh/Amare/Boozer all play a position your #1 pick plays, Wade and JoeJ play a position your second best future star/asset plays, which leaves Lebron.

Now that is a freaking gambler move. Dunleavy/Sterling must have huevos.

Or they'll use it as a selling point later and say "look, we did everything to get Lebron but he didn't want to come" and then just pocket the savings.

I agree that the important thing is to get assets and build a good team. Thornton was a lotto player, that hasn't looked like a lotto player for quite some time. He has gotten a lot of hate from fans based on his play and lack of development (regression). I defended the dude like crazy, trying to focus on the positives as opposed to the negatives, but he hasn't shown that he is worth this franchise penciling him in as an important cog into the future.

If we weren't trying to get active so that we could become players in the offseason, then it would be a bad trade. It's not just about cutting salary so that it can benefit Sterling's wallet. It's about going all in and trying to make a splash. There are still decent players that aren't going to be max-level players that can help the team win. Plus we can also make trades in the summer as well.

F*** this team! Al Thornton was my favorite player. Now he gets shipped to the Bullets for nothing??? If we don't get Lebron or Wade its over. 21 years of hoping and praying, all down the drain.
