Sources: Mavs Benched Howard With Hangover
"A night of drinking may have spelled the end for Josh Howard in Dallas.
According to multiple team sources, the Mavericks benched Howard for their Jan. 20 game against the Wizards because of a hangover after a night of partying."

Take tips Wizards upper management. This is how you properly dismantle a situation. You keep quite about it until after you accomplish your objective, in this case a trade. The ends justify the mean.
All we had to do was keep quite about the Arenas situation when it happened and then pulled off a trade, which wouldn't have been as hard as it seems. The reason being is because around the time of the "gun incident" Arenas was playing well. He had just come off a 40 point + performance against the Warriors; he had a good stock value. But what does our management do? They do what they do best, shatter it. Where is the organization development, rationalism, and fundamental leadership?
If the “gun incident” was brought up a month or so after the fact when Arenas would have been on another team it would of just been wispers and passed over.
Now we are stuck in a situation where we have to rebuild around Arenas to get his value up before trading him. We can't buy him out because that will be too expensive. It will be cheaper to build up his value for the first half of the season and then trade him. I'm not completely for trading him, what I am for is new ownership and management. Upper management needs to be wiped due to incompetence on several levels as everyone knows.
At least J. Howard's contract isn't guaranteed and we have team option on him for next season, which obviously won’t be exercised. However, you never know what to except with these Washington Clownz in the front office.

After the Wizards defeated Minnesota on Wednesday, Howard said he would like to "stick it to" the Mavericks. But when asked about the story, he said, "I'll just leave it alone. I know it's not true."
He said excessive partying the night before was not the reason he missed the game. "I was sick and that was it," Howard said. "I don't know where that is coming from and it's sad they are trying to talk about me the way they are. That was over a month ago. It's amazing how stuff is coming up like this now and I'm not even there. But I know I didn't do anything and it's time to move on."

I agree with you, the entire gun episode was bungled badly by Grunfeld and the Pollins & Cuban abused Ernie in the trade

i dont blame eg or the pollins with the arenas situation. it was bad news bears for arenas from the start. iirc, eg and the pollins kept the story fairly quiet until an unnamed source blabbed their mouth as a "key witness" then gil ran his mouth on his twitter and it was slippery slope from there. the new york times were the first to report it and reported that gil had a stand off with jaravis. guns pointed and everything. since then, half the nba fan base based their opinion off this story.

How can you not blame them? The situation should of been kept in house, and that's where they dropped the ball. Your right a "key witness" did run his mouth. However, that’s due to the incompetence of management not being able to provide the diligence and leadership to keep it an in house matter. Plenty of heated stuff goes on in the locker room, read Jordan Rules just to get a glimpse. 95% of incidents don't make it out of the locker room. The fact of the matter is once the incident happened EG and Saunders should have had a serious talk with the entire team and staff. Instead we hear EG is texting Gilbert "you know this could be grounds to void your contract right?" It's not as if word didn't leak amongst the players and staff as soon as the incident happened. It was reported that several players were actually in the locker room during the incident and then it transitioned into practice or amongst the players and staff. So basically as soon as the incident happened EG and Saunders were both more then aware. They could have tight lipped the situation then and there and shut the lid. If I’m EG I'm making Arenas pay back double his debt on the spot and apologize to not only Crittenton but the rest of the team. End of story.
As for the twittering I mean come on you got to be kidding me. I saw this fool twittering and I knew that was going to be his demise. I was even thinking about sending him a message to tell him you’re putting yourself at risk. How does someone from management not grasp the situation right away and put an end to it. Where are their critical thinking caps? There is plenty of precedent that signifies players getting into trouble for tweeting. The Wizards current management should hire me so I can consult and school them into the game of How-Not-2-Be-Clownz 101.
I'm not saying what Arenas did was right but we all know it was a joke. However, he is known for extreme jokes. With that being said obviously what he did was boneheaded and wrong, joke or not. However, if it was so serious then they should have handled it on the spot and reported him to the Feds. They didn’t though because everyone knew it was a cruel prank. It was a serious matter that should have been handled on the spot amongst the organization. No one else should have been involved. We shouldn’t have heard this story until after Arenas was traded. Think about what we could have got for him at the trade deadline. I’m sure he could have built up his value even more by then. We could have easily got some good draft picks and expiring contracts. I’m fine with cleaning house if management feels the project just isn’t working out. There are certain procedures good management follows to properly illuminize the situation. You would think that for getting paid millions of dollars EG and Saunders would be able to do a better job of controlling the situation. I mean it really is just inexcusable. I still have a feeling if Abe was around he wouldn’t of let it go down as it did.
With all that being said, for you to protect managements interest, stating “that we kept the story fairly quiet” is a little off basis. Especially considering if it wasn’t for the Nets we would be the laughing stock of the league. They could have gone about it a more oriented way. Perhaps, they were trying to hide it, but they didn't do a good job of it, and that’s because well quite frankly our management is horrible. And this situation exemplifies that, actually it magnifies it x100.
I’m not trying to take anyone’s side here. I’m looking at this from a perspective of an owner/gm with the bottom line, value, and reputation of the team considered.
Well the balls in your court now Arenas. The funny thing is once new management comes in along with getting a lottery pick, signing a few good free agents, Arenas coming back in form and the Wizards maintaining a good record next season all would be forgotten.
