Lakers 2010 PG options
This is what I see happening:
1. Fisher re-signs for the minimum.
2. Shannon Brown opts out and gets signed for a 4-yr 20M deal.
3. Jordan Farmar is offered 10M over 3. If he takes it, he's ours. If he doesn't, some team who struck out in FA might be willing to offer him 4-5M per.
===============================================================================================
Assuming we do nothing w/ the MEM 2nd, meaning not draft a PG, the Lakers could very well make use of the MLE to acquire:
1. Randy Foye
2. Raymond Felton
3. JJ Redick
We could also use Sasha's then-expiring to acquire someone who already has a contract. Your thoughts?

Re: Lakers 2010 PG options
Phil Jackson has Mitch resign Fish while Shannon Brown and Farmar sign some where else. So our point guards will be Fisher and Sasha as back up. The Lakers decline to take on anymore salary.

Lakers do not want to add money. They do not want to resign anyone.

Re: Lakers 2010 PG options
I am changing my tune on Calderon (and like 6'3 and 28 y.o). He is impressing me with his 43% 41% 41% 3pt shooting the past 3-yrs and nearly 9 assist per game as fulltime starter, 6 this season sharing distribution with Jack and Hedo. Points are just a plus (11 or 12).
Defensively he is not a strong on-ball but since the Lakers play that 'steer the ball to parts of the floor' Phil D (I like to call it the Triangle D), he should do fine.
Fisher retires, becomes Mgmt in Players Assoc.
Farmar s/t'd out to Toronto in a Calderon deal with Vujacic, Powell (to make Bosh happy)
LA rolls PG with Calderon, Brown (resigned with Birds longer), and 2nd round pick from Memphis (#46?) who should be Scottie Reynolds - great range, good defender, and ideal triangle PG, not a traditional one.
Calderon/Brown/Reynolds
Kobe/Brown
And keep the MLE to get a solid backup for Ron Ron, or split it and get that and another Big.
Added- Toronto goes for it to make Bosh stay, Farmar gives them a natural b/u for Jack (Bosh's other buddy) under contract for a few yrs inexpensively, but for JFar can hit free agency later still young.

Pairing Gasol and Calderon together would be pretty solid. Calderon would most likely have an easier time fitting in because he and Gasol have chemistry for playing on the Spanish National team.

Re: Lakers 2010 PG options
It doesn't take much.
Roger Mason starting with Steve Blake backing him up would be a nice duo. Perhaps Houston looks at their 2011 plan and gives us Ariza for Vujajic, and we re-sign Brown.
PG- Mason, Blake
SG- Bryant, Brown
SF- Artest, Ariza
That second unit would be quite dynamic with Odom at PF and one of the big men.

Re: Lakers 2010 PG options
Calderon's salary and benefit would be harsh and I don't think they'll accept Walton. I expect Calderon to be traded for Curry+perhaps Tony Douglass.
There are enough options in 2010-2011 that any decent veteran will join along with another and improve the team. Combination players such as Mason are excellent bets in the triangle, having the capability to play at PG and SG.

Re: Lakers 2010 PG options
Calderon is the perfect PG for the Lakers -- except (capital E) his defense.
Mason and Blake are cool too -- but I can't help but to hold out hope that we can get us a real quarterback for Vujacic and Gasol or Bynum.
Any real quarterback in the league who doesn't mind dumping it down to Kobe over the next 4-5 years could come here and win a few championships and be apart of a dynasty.
LBJ
D. Williams
Paul etc.
Anything is possible with the Lakers -- a guy just has to REALLY wanna come here to win rings (he'll get PAID).
Gasol or Bynum are pretty good trading chips if they want to make a splash.
Otherwise, if Calderon was just an average defender, I'd take him in a second. Other than highlights and box scores I have only actually watched Calderon play about 10 times. I think he is a GREAT player but his defense or lack thereof can really stand out sometimes -- that's not good. On the other hand, veteran players have really improved under the Phil Jackson in the past.

Re: Lakers 2010 PG options
This "Lakers don't want to add money" isn't so clear cut as many of you think. Dr.Buss won't do it if it doesn't make the team better than it already is. He's said many of times he do it if it keeps us contenders.
Secondly Jordan ain't coming back, yeah he's restricted but his agent is going to ask the Lakers not to match any offer for him........Jordan want's out in the worse way.

Fisher retiring would open the door for Calderon. That way, we dont have two defensive liabilities at point guard. I would offer Walton, Sasha and a resigned Powell for Calderon and Banks.

Re: Lakers 2010 PG options
Kobe is going to be traded for Deron Williams
We will need to find a shoot guard to fit in with the rest.
But seriously if the Lakers win the championship this season then you know damn well Phil is going to be back since he will want to finish his 4th 3peat and his second with the Lakers. Kobe and Phil will both want Derek to be there with them because he has played a part in the first 3 peat and if we win this year he would have been a part of 2/3 of another 3peat. There is no way that he isn't going be around to finish the job.
However Ammo and Farmar expiring leaves the door open for the front office to sign a capable point guard for at least the MLE. FIsher would most certainly come off the bench because we would finally have a point guard of our choosing. Here is a list of all 2010 free agents.

Agreed.
Buss dosesn't want to spend money on a guy at 8 or 9 mill per only for us to be slightly better. If we pay that kind of money it should be a marked improvement ... or it would have to include Walton's contract. If Walton is included, it's a true no brainer.
Also, you are dead on about Farmar. At this point you could promise him 20 minutes a game on a team that wins 5 rings in a row and he would pass it up for the chance to go somewhere else and become a 34 minute a game starter.
Farmar's situation is good for us because he wll be more focused than ever to get to get his next deal and he knows playing for the Lakers that everyone will be watching him for the next four months.
He'll have some really good games going forward. Trust me.

Chris Duhon might be a good fit here too. He plays defense and can shoot reasonably well. Most importantly, he is cheap. I think a combo of Duhon and Ridnour as our PG would give us all the offense and defense we need to compete.

Re: Lakers 2010 PG options
Lakers' have only 7 players under contract for next season. Kobe, Gasol, Bynum, Artest, Odom, Sasha and Luke. So they have to sign at least 6 to keep up with last years lineup.
I think Farmar and Morrison will become free agents and never to be lakers' again. The other free agents are Fish, Benga and Powell. Fish will come back I think as a bench player at a lower rate. Benga might come back but he will probably get a raise of some sort. Powell I don't think is back.
Then their is Shannon Brown who has a player option at 2.1 million. I think he tries to get more money elsewhere but he is not worth the MLE. So the lakers take a pass.
So that brings the roster to 9 players at around 88 million. So they would have to sign 4 more players in order to get to 13. Either way, the Lakers will exceed this years pay roll of 91 million. Unless they can find 4 players for less than 3 million.
I love Ray Felton and I think he brings the speed and get to the hoop ability need to put pressure on other teams. He is making 5.5 this year and will be looking for a raise. He is def worth the MLE but he might be outta reach. The backup to the plan for me would be Steve Blake who is a great shooter yet lacks the defense that is the Achilles heal of the team this year so what do you do.
The other possibilities would be the Lakers to move Bynum for an all star type point guard. That would be based on them feeling Bynum and Gasol can't play together as a unit. For me I think they can and it will come down to unselfishness by Bynum. He will command help and he has to be a willing passer. Him passing to Pau cutting to the hoop would be an automatic score everytime but right now he just wants to score everytime and that hurts the team game.

If Toronto agreed, I do this one all day. They might be interested in a signed and traded Farmar (maybe 3-4 mill per) with Walton and Vujachick. You're exactly right about the inadequacies of a Fisher/Calderon platoon as well. If Fish is back I don't think it would work.
If Fish is done then I would sign a Larry Hughes type of big defensive facilitating PG to start and bring Calderon off the bench. A Hughes/Calderon platoon is WAY better than Fisher/Calderon, plus Hughes and Calderon can play together if necessary.
