Josh Howard
(Mods, please feel free to merge. Didn't see any threads that focused solely on JHo.)
Which would be better for the Wizards?
1. Let JHo walk after this season and collect the $10.9m in cap space.
2. Pick up JHo's $11.8m option for next season.
I would prefer we keep him. I feel like he could really boost his value here and bring back something of value this time next year. If not, we let him walk after next year and go hard after Melo or Durant.
Your thoughts?

Well, up for debate is more like....
1. let J-Ho walk
3. decline the option and make an offer in free agency.
I don't think picking up the option is in the discussion.

Okay, so let him walk and do what with the cap space? Acquire other useless castoffs on expirings? I don't get the plan here, most people here "RealGM.com" (big surprise right) love to make moves for the sake of making moves; I don't see anybody having a plan for anything aside from gut the team and watch young players develop and keep hoping for that #1 every year.

Zero interest in picking up the option. I'd probably offer him a one or two year deal at $6-7 million per, and if he didn't like that, then that's okay, we already have Thornton signed for next year, so we'd just start him at SF instead.

I think we'd need to go 3 years to get him. I'd resign him at 4-years, $24M with a team option in Year 4.

I would like to have him back assuming the price is right. However, teams who put all their chips in on 2010 could get crazy and start a bidding war. If that becomes the case, we'll have to let him walk.
I don't know if its just the honeymoon period, but as of now Howard seems focused and ready to ball. In his interview he seemed genuine that he likes Washington so we'll see how it goes come summertime.

Decline the option... a one or two year deal is the max that should be offered....

I don't want to keep him around. Everyone is in love with him right now because of the honeymoon period but I don't want to keep him given his past history. It is going to start showing up at times over the next season.
Furthermore, Thornton seems to be replicating what Howard does. I'd rather have Miller back and he should be more signable (3 years/19 mil?).
I wish we didn't have to worry about cap space. It's a shame because Howard and Miller are perfect complements next to each other.

Re: Josh Howard
Lets just talk about Howard the player for a second. Thats the main thing and Im 50/50 on him. I loved the trade because I have always liked him and I thought he would fit perfect in Flip's system because unlike Caron, he can put the ball on the floor & slash. If he just played smart ball then I would love to resign him and wouldnt hesitate.
The problem is that last game he started playing like a guy who said that I went from a great team to a bad team so now I can just go all out and hoist up shots because Im the #1 option. Its like he thought this was his chance to average 30 on a bad team and the only way we can win is for him to get 30. Again, I love his game but if he's going to be on that AJ black hole tip then I dont want to resign him. Im a huge Thorton fan also but the problem is that Thorton still doesnt give us that ball handling & slashing that Howard can and I think we need that in Flip's system. We will need it less with Gil back and if Blatche keeps playing like this but I still think we need it

Re: Josh Howard
Basically i see this as Washington giving him a tryout for the rest of the year. I would certainly not pick up the option if i were you guys. His value should have fallen to the MLE or 7 million range. 1 to 3 year deal. When he is 'right', when his game is on, he's worth the type of salary he is gettign now but he just hasnt been that way since the ankle problems started 2 years ago.
Also, he is a good guy and seems genuinly nice, but he is a total dumbass. He's as dumb as a rock. He's very emotional and almost childlike with his behaviour. The Mavs brass had to try to baby him and protect him alot of times. He's not going to beat up a chick, he's not going to shoot someone, but he will do stupid stuff like say he smokes weed on the radio, show up to a game hung over, throw a birthday party while in the midst of losing a playoff series. Just stupid brainless things like that.
But with the way your team is now, if you can resign him to a short term contract for 6 to 7 million and he turns back into the Howard that the Mavs relied on so much, then you have a real steal for that type of contract.

2 years - get extra picks, and then use cap space to get an outstanding player or 2. Then there's the option of signing okay players in an attempt to be good enough for the last playoff spot - so we can get swept by Cleveland - which we usually follow.

Re: Josh Howard
He's essentially playing for a contract right now because there's no way this team picks up his option. So let him walk.

Re: Josh Howard
I think the options are:
1. let him walk
2a. Make him an offer a little over the MLE(3 years max)
2b. S&T if he gets interest high above the MLE(or for a contract that is too long)
I think his play should dictate what the team does. I think unfortunately the team can only keep him or Miller.

I am not ready to make a judgement after 3 games but if he can sustain this level of play, I would love to keep him for the right price. But I will say this if he proves to be a good fit for Flip's system, we need to think long and hard about keeping him. Howard, Thornton, and Miller can man the 2/3 spot for most of the minutes. Plus he will get after it on defense which is always a plus. Dont like him at 11 million though.
I really like the line up with Howard, Thornton, and Singleton. They really get after it.

You're a funny guy hands. What kind of team do you expect to build? Do you not realize that most athletes succumb to these transgressions. Even those you may not have thought would otherwise? Tiger Woods? Michael Jordan? Tim Duncan... People need to get off it with trying to build this choir boy team.

Hands...don't act like Andray Blatche is not cut in the same mold of idiocy as Josh is.
