I actually really like the signing. Philly signed him as a starter last year, which at this point, he is obviously incapable of doing. He started the year off awful, but once he moved to the pen he had an ERA of 2.5 in 50 innings (52 K's, 16 walks, 43 hits). For 1.2 million its not much of a risk at all, and could turn into a very valuable piece going into the post-season.

Plus I like the way the bullpen is shaping up. You can let Hughes pitch in AAA to get his innings up as a starter and get him ready for next year, plus bolster the bullpen when he reaches his innings limit as a starter. The bullpen has a lot of inning eaters (Aceves, Park, Gaudin).

Dude there's no way that Hughes doesn't break camp with the team. He's not going to progress in AAA.

I'm pretty not thrilled with this deal. I think this guy is going to get eaten alive in NY.

And if they stick Hughes in the bullpen then it will be another year of development wasted. I think they're better off putting Hughes in AAA to start the season off and keep developing him. Let him be the 6th starter (come in if somebody gets hurt) and when he reaches his innings limit (whether he's at AAA or the majors) stick him in the bullpen for the remainder of the year. This lets him develop as a starter and reach his innings limit (he can be a starter all of next year when pettite retires) and bolsters the bullpen when he reaches that limit. That's just my opinion. It's very short-sighted to just throw him into the bullpen if he doesn't win the 5th starter spot, because that sets him back another year.

I like the signing. It really gives the Yankees maybe the best bullpen they've had in a while: Rivera, Joba or Hughes, Chan Ho Park, Robertson (darkhorse), Marte (if he pitches like postseason), and Aceves (if he pitches like guy for first 3/4's of last season) is a pretty formidable group.
