Like Gary Payton in 04 maybe?

Thing with us is, we don't even know if we will be running the Tri next season or not. Which is why I love Foye for this position. Many contend that Foye for the full MLE is too much, but would you expect a guy who expects to be paid, and hasn't been paid yet to be content with 3-4M just because we are the Lakers?

Washington at 3-4M will pay Foye. Washington at 5.5M will hesitate. Triangle or not, Foye will fit in just fine. I like how he and Bynum can potentially be the core when the Kobe-Gasol era passes...

The Lakers FA options at PG this summer are Blake, Foye, and Felton. Options for trade will probably still be Hinrich. Thats about it when it comes to PG options this summer and of course there is the option of bringing back Fisher to come off the bench and to start Brown.

If we learned anything, its that Shannon Brown is NOT a PG. Otherwise this debate would have been all over.

What do we really need from the position?

Popular opinion (including my own) was that we just needed someone to play defense and knock down jaders but considering that we SHOULD be an inside team and our best player (our TRUE point guard) is not made from the same yolk as Magic and LBJ ... I think we need a guy who can get the ball inside to Bynum and Gasol and Kobe while still able to knock down shots and play some defense.

I wish Walton could dribble, shoot, and defend because he's the type of distributor we need to keep everyone involved.

Defense and shooting are VERY important but at this point we have two seven footers who like to post and a guy in Kobe who should not have to be a facilitator anymore. At his age, like Michael Jordan, he deserves the opportunity to pick his spots on the floor without having to bring the ball up as well.

This is why I wanted J. Kidd so bad this summer and why I am deeply intrigued by Calderon (if they take back Walton, Vujacic, and Farmar).

Oh please you know we had no shot at Kidd or Calderon because no one wants our crap so do us favor by stop smoking weed because it's messing you mind up.

How about a Trade without actually trading?

Lakers sign Foye to an offer sheet starting at 4.0 mil, and Washington agrees not to match since...
they sign Farmar to an offer sheet starting at 2.0 mil.

They get what they need- a solid true PG to play behind Arenas and save some cap space year over year with the smaller salaried Farmar. He gets solid floor time as their only true backup so it's a good option for him and he'll only be 26 when he's FA again to go out and get a good MLE deal.

LA gets a triangle style PG, ie SG but with handles, at less than MLE. Maybe a 4 yr with team opt for 5th (that comes to 24 mil if all 5 yrs are played out).

If Washington knows they have a backup in place, via a wink wink with Mitch not to match, they can comfortably let Foye go since he's a bad fit for their style - kind of like Farmar for LA.

1. Fisher re-signs for the minimum.
2. Shannon Brown opts out and gets signed for a 4-yr 20M deal.
3. Jordan Farmar is offered 10M over 3. If he takes it, he's ours. If he doesn't, some team who struck out in FA might be willing to offer him 4-5M per.

===============================================================================================

Assuming we do nothing w/ the MEM 2nd, meaning not draft a PG, the Lakers could very well make use of the MLE to acquire:

1. Randy Foye
2. Raymond Felton
3. JJ Redick

We could also use Sasha's then-expiring to acquire someone who already has a contract. Your thoughts?

There's no way the Lakers sign Shannon Brown for that type of coin. I think the hard stance we saw with Ariza last summer will be the rule going forward with guys having a breakout season seeking the full MLE. The Walton and Vujacic contracts have taught the front office a valuable lesson.

Shannon Brown, unlike the other FAs we have, will be sought out. With all the cap space lying around, it would not surprise me if a team like the Bulls offered Shanwow something in the 4-5M range. Everything will depend on how the cap is set, and how FA goes for many teams. For instance, if the Hawks lost JJ via FA, it would make sense for them to nab Shanwow via the MLE.

In previous seasons, Luke and Sasha were mistakes because we were bidding against ourselves. In Shanwow's case, there actually is competition.

The Bulls have already seen Shannon on their team and they know what they're going to get and it doesn't workout for them like it does in our offense. Shannon is valuable though but not full MLE value.

on topic: there arent many teams out there that be looking at shannon brown immediately, maybe we could tie up a deal thats amenable to both the lakers and shannon...

he's playing well above his pay grade, im thinking kupchak offers him a 3yr/10mil contract with a player option for a 4th

I actually think Kupchak will be offering a 11/3 contract to both Shanwow and JFarm. Its just my understanding that Shanwow has more interest from other parties than Farmar.

If the Lakers have post season sucess again I wouldn't be surprised if they kept everyone and Morrison was the only one let go. Lakers would most likely sign a back up SF for a cheaper price and go on for the 3peat with the same roster. Only change that we would see is Farmar starting and Fisher coming off the bench.

Taking active steps is integral to maintaing a team's ability to compete over the next five years rather than just the next couple. We missed a major opportunity years ago when we passed on Chauncey BIllups as an upcoming well travelled young PG who fit perfectly into the triangle.

You could argue that had we not passed on Billups we'd have a few more rings.
01-02 MIN 82 54 28.7 0.423 0.394 0.885 0.4 2.3 2.8 5.5 0.8 0.2 1.68 2.06 12.5

Those were Chauncey's stats before joining the Pistons. Randy Foye might very well be the next guy of that nature although I'm not sure he has the defensive skills. The one guy that I think could be available for peanuts and could be a great fit would be Acie Law. I'm not suggesting we sign him as the first or second PG even. I suggest we sign him as depth at say 700k for two years.

There's just no reason to get rid of the triangle. It's a perfect system as long as you find intelligent players for it, actively looking through the scrap heaps to find guys that fit.

Yes, Rondo is the ultimate Triangle point with that accurate deep range and ability to play without ball in hand.

I'd still take Rondo in an instant despite his lack of a jump shot. The guy straight hustles, rebounds, and plays good D.

To All Hail the Lakers will use more than the minimum to improve the PG spot the Lakers will bring in minimum level players to fill out the remaining bench spots like 3rd PF or backup C.

I can only imagine how ridiculous the Lakers would be right now if they had Chauncey Billups.
