Corey Brewers defense

Post#1 » by diggity_88 » Tue Feb 23, 2010 11:01 pm

Hey, outside fan.. not able to catch a lot of Minnesota games, but I know Corey Brewer was drafted by his status as a lock down defender. Now this year I have heard tons about his offensive outburst this season.. but I was wondering how he's been on the defensive end.

Is he living up to his reputation?
What areas does he excel in on defense? And what areas does he lack? ie. Post, fighting through screens, pick and roll, help/weak side defense, closing out, man/zone defense.

Just looking for a sort of updated scouting report from its fans, because I have been intrigued by his play as of late.

Thanks.

I think he's a much better defender at SG then he was at SF. He's got a length advantage over most SGs and he's quick enough to stay in front of them as well. I think he's also a very smart defender who is very good at getting into the passing lanes. His problem comes when he's guarding bigger rougher SFs or even some bulky SGs because he's so slight he can get brushed aside when a player drives to the basket. He does have "wirey" strength but I don't think he'll ever put on much more good weight.

yeah i was going to ask about that too. Getting drafted alot of the places that was said he needed to improve on was weight to bang with the guys in the NBA, but if im not mistaken hes been 185 since hes come into the league. I don't get it... you'd think Minny and Brewwer himself would have this as a top priority in the offseason to put on some weight so he can be versatile and play both the 2 and 3.

He has a lot of energy and gives good defenses spurts and is great at ripping the ball. He makes a lot of mistakes however and he certainly isn't a lock down guy at this point. The wolves has some of the worst perimeter D in the NBA. Players are always getting by our defenders and scoring in the paint.

He lifts all the time, just doesn't show it. He needs to eat more protein it seems. Get him eating 36 omelets a day.

It's a little overrated. I think he is valuable as a hustle player on defense and he has very long arms. But he isn't a perfect defender or someone worth a lottery pick base just on his d. Luckily his offense has picked up making that pick seem alright.

He needs more calories in general. It is the whole concept from bodybuilding of bulking and cutting. You HAVE to eat excess calories to put on weight of any kind (fat or muscle). So to really build muscle bodybuilders will eat like animals for their bulking phase in which they also pack on some fat, and then use strictly formulated diet and exercise plans that allow them to keep the muscle and strip the fat.

Corey is just not eating enough food to put on muscle. I'm sure he burns an inordinate amount of energy with all the basketball (obviously), so he needs to eat like an absolute beast to put on weight. Especially a naturally stringy guy such as himself. Genetics can be overcome when it comes to building muscle (obviously much, much easier for some guys than others, but it is not insurmountable).

I'd be worried about his quickness being somewhat limited if he put on too much mass, though...obviously breaking 200 wouldn't be a concern. I'm only 6'2" and I have (intentionally) bulked up from 178 to about 205 from last summer to now. I'm still not exactly "big." I can't imagine being 6 inches taller than I am and almost 20 lbs lighter.

He's definitely not a lock-down defender, but he's scrappy as hell and can be extremely disruptive when he wants to be. He would benefit greatly from a defensive big to make up for his mistakes and gambling.

Its tough to tell how good Corey is on the defensive end. By scheme (I'm assuming), it seems like he is always roaming or running around chasing after the ball. He's got pretty good closing ability on shooters that he's left open, but he gets burnt a lot because the scheme has him way off his man helping. I think he could become a lock down defender if his team ever gets to the point where they have 4 other solid defenders on the court.

I don't want him to gain mass, his game is predicated on quickness and activity

Brew is mostly energy, combined with some pretty solid defensive bbiq. He isn't "lockdown" ala tayshaun prince or bruce bowen, but he's a solid addition defensively to a team.

i don't think we can evaluate anyones defense on this team accurately since we really do stink at team D. Darko and Hollins can block shots, Love can rebound, Brewer and Flynn have a knack for steals... thats all i'm willing say are facts.
