Not to break up the thread, but what constitutes a contender?

A guy with a real shot at beating the champ?
By this criteria, a guy like Jon Fitch would have to be considered a pretender, even though he's universally recognized as the #2 or #3 welterweight in the world. While on the other hand, I think there are some guys (Hardy, Sonnen to use current examples) with decent shots to beat the champs in their divisions, but probably not strong enough overall to maintain a top 5 ranking for years, like Fitch.

A guy who is top 5 in his division and will likely stay there for a long time?
The other side of the above argument, where Fitch would be considered a contender, even though he has no shot at beating GSP, and guys like Hardy and Sonnen would not be.

And with the age/experience level of the guys being discussed, are we talking about their next fight, or whether they could be a contender in the next 5 years?

I think its meant to be a little bit more "loose" than that, not a strict definition of cotender. Or at least thats how I take it, a bit of fun; is the guy over rated or not going to make it (pretender) or up there already (maybe some consider him over rated, but he's the real deal) or on his way into the "elite" or "higher tiers".

Otherwise it would be more a case of breaking down each fighter.

Trust CPT to get all serious ;P

Contender IMO until proven otherwise. Has quality wins and his one loss was a decision against Fitch.
