OT: Game management (Coughlin)

Post#1 » by Kerb Hohl » Mon Dec 3, 2007 6:27 pm

So most of us in here can agree that if MM has a weakness it is his game management with the clock/timeouts/etc.

What the heck was Tom Coughlin doing?

For those of you who didn't watch, the Giants were down to the Bears 16-7, scored a TD, and were driving again down 16-14.

On the drive they completed a pass to the 2 yard line down 16-14 with about 1:30 to go. They had 3 timeouts and the Bears had 1.

Maybe you guys have a different philosophy but the Giants had the option of running the clock all the way down and kicking a game winning FG if they wanted to.

So what are the chances of missing a 20 yard FG(that you can probably center up on one of the plays) as time expires...1 or 2%?

On the flip side, you can go for the score, which the Bears will most likely allow you to do if you try and run a forward play...

What are the chances of fumbling while trying to score? Then after that, you are giving the Bears 1:30 to go, with a timeout, and they have Devin Hester who has made sure that they start out at at least the 40 on all kickoffs. They need a TD to WIN and not even tie the game(if you score the TD to go up 7 or 8 maybe I can understand...).

What are the chances of the Bears scoring a TD there? You're in a prevent defense and they start at the 40 I can pretty much guarantee most teams will get 3 shots from your 20 yard line at least(the Bears got it to the 22 I believe then backed themselves to the 27 on a penalty). I would put the chances of that failing for you at 20-30%.

I just can't believe that coaches who are this boneheaded can coach in the NFL. MM has a known weakness at game management so I write this thread because I was just thinking about the possibility of a situation like this arising in the playoffs or something. I hope to god MM handles a situation like this much better. And aside from Eli being extremely overrated and Shockey being a complete tool, this was just another example of why the Giants are overrated this year(woah, they beat the Dolphins, Jets, 49ers and Falcons as a part of their 6 game win streak) and why they always wilt in the 2nd half of the season.
