Playoff Simulation

Post#1 » by Miklo » Thu Feb 25, 2010 5:59 am

I got very bored so I decided to do some playoff simulations. I updated my NBA 2K10 roster to reflect trade deadline trades and current player peformance, set the playoff standing to what it would be if the playoffs started now and then simulated it..25 times. Yes I do realize 25 isn't a huge sample size but I do have like half of a life so there's a limit people. Although I may do it again at some point...

This is the result of the 25 playoffs. For each team, I listed what round they got knocked out in. The count is how many times they got knocked out at that particular round out of the 25 total simulations.

Image

I think the craziest result is the Lakers failing hard..not even one Finals appearance.

Suns knocked out in the first round 20 times, knocked out in round 2 3 times and made it to the finals twice (getting knocked out both times).

For Championships, our leaderboard is
Cleveland - 6 rings
Dallas - 5 rings
Boston - 4
San Antonio - 4
Denver - 2
OKC, UTA, ORL, ATL - 1 each

Just some random fun

Ahh 2K10. I still play the my player mode. I left Phoenix after a season and a championship and went to play for Nets so I can make them better.

lol we get to the Finals twice. Which is not bad. There's still hope!

Interesting that the Suns are more likely to be knocked out in the first round than any other team in the west. Interesting excersize, though I am not sure I agree with PHX being the most likely to lose in the first round, especially with us having a real shot at home court advantage. We are only 2.5 games out of 2nd in the West, and 1.5 games behind home court advantage in the first round.

Very nice post, though.

Interesting, but removes all human factor from it. I wonder how it'll shake up -- personally I see the Suns in WCF against Lakers.

if we nab the 4th or 5th spot and manage a win we see them in the 2nd round

we gotta rise to at least 3rd (unlikely because of the stacked mavs, gellin utah, and just straight up great nuggets) or fall the 6th and hope lakers somehow get knocked out in the 2nd round

Suns can beat the Lakers. Esp. in a 7 game series w/ a healthy roster.

false. thats why we're talking about avoiding them. IMO there's 2 teams they must avoid as long as possible; Lakers and Mavs. Everyone else, including the Spurs, we can beat.

Suns as a 4 seed - Jazz as a 5 seed would be my ideal 1st round matchup... Scared sh^tless of facing OKC, POR, DEN or DAL in the 1st round.

I just won the Championship for the Suns as "My Player" and came in 2nd in MVP votes, was ROY, made All-Star team (game MVP) yadda yadda yadda. End of season I was up at a player rating of 83 (6'3" guard). We traded Nash mid-season for Big Z because he was unhappy my guy was taking all his minutes, lol. End of season rolled around and still had a decent roster. MyPlayer, Amare, LB, Z, Hill, Dudley, Lou, Tim Thomas, Larry Hughes, Earl Clark. I was asked to stay with the Suns or I had the chance to go to LA, Celtics, OKC, or SAS. I chose to stay, but after I chose that, the GM traded everyone away except for my starters. Now I have a bunch of grey faced rooks and my starters. Ugh, shoulda signed w/ LA.

Damn that's solid. My Player mode is so hard for me, I don't know why. The best I did was to be the starting PG of the Raptors...Jarret Jack got pissed so they traded him for Martell Webster. I was starting and playing like the whole game...but then all of a sudden they sent me to the D League and I never got back to the NBA after playing like a whole season. Bastards.

I got bored of playing 2K for a while, but then after the trade deadline I got the roster updates and started an Association as the Knicks - and simulated to the end of the season, where I signed LeBron and Boozer, and traded Boozer for Bosh (Bosh had opted in so I couldn't sign him straight up. I bolstered that with Rudy Fernandez and Marc Gasol, and a sick rookie PG. Dynasty baby!

Right now the playoff matches would go

1 Lakers
8 Blazers

4 Mavericks
5 Suns
xxxxxxxxxxx
2 Nuggets
7 Spurs

3 Jazz
6 Thunder

If we manage to beat the Mavs in round 1(which will be tough), we'll get bounced by LA in the semis.

In an ideal world, we would be in a bracket that doesn't have the Lakers, Spurs, Nuggets, or Jazz. Something like:

1 Lakers
8 Spurs

4 or 5 Nuggets
4 or 5 Jazz
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
2 or 3 Suns
6 or 7 Thunder

2 or 3 Mavs
6 or 7 Blazers

That way we'd avoid the top-heavy bracket. 3/5 of the toughest teams in the conference will be knocked out by the WCF, and we'll only have the Mavericks as super formidable foe on our path to the WCF(although I fully recognize the fact that with the way this team plays, we could get completely owned by anyone in the first round, no matter who we play).

Yeah we need to give other teams the chance to knock the Lakers out. Though I just think there are too many teams we can't likely beat in a 7 game series. Even in the scenario you posted we get taken by the Mavs before we ever see the other teams. Anything can happen though..I guess :/

The Suns have the squad to beat Lakers in a 7 game series. You guys are out of your minds if you don't think so.

Prop bet

If Suns play Lakers I'll bet any amount of money you want that we lose the series.
