Lions claim LB Ashlee Palmer off of waivers from the Bills.

http://www.freep.com/article/20100218/SPORTS01/100218042/1049/Sports/Lions-claim-LB-Ashlee-Palmer-off-waivers-from-Bills

"I believe it’s a good move,” Palmer said. “I feel good. I guess my services were no longer needed in Buffalo. I’m excited about the Detroit Lions picking me up. …

“Hopefully, I can just come in and contribute anywhere, whether it’s playing time here, special teams here, wherever I can help. It really doesn’t matter to me. I’m not one of those guys. I just want to be on the field playing and just helping the team out wherever it’s needed.”

Palmer expected to take his physical, meet the coaching staff and tour team headquarters. The Lions have not confirmed the waiver claim. They generally will not confirm a roster addition until the player passes his physical.

Not a big splashy move, but adding a 23 yr old OLB to a young defense to prove himself can't do anything but help us build it up.

I'd like to see him stick through training camp.

hey, young depth is young depth. He wasn't even waived for being bad, Bills are changing defenses and he didn't fit. The pick-up can't hurt. At least we'll get a long look at the cat.

He makes Jordon Dizon look big, weighs less than some corners. Probably camp fodder only even though he can flat-out fly around the field. Worth a look.

Hes 23 and he was pretty good on special teams. That alone makes this a good no-risk move for this franchise.

That's the thing though. There is no 'strong' or 'free' safety on this team. Schwartz has made is clear that he wants two 'do everything' safeties.

To be honest, I'm more concerned about both corners than I am whos opposite Delmas out there. If we could fill in a S in there, good. But it's not a huge priority IMO.

Defensive concerns:
1. DT
2. CB
3. DE
4. S
5. LB

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

1) Trade 2nd rounder for Dorsey

2) Trade 3rd rounder for Cromartie

3) Sign DE Julius Peppers

4) Sign S Antrele Rolle

5) Draft a LB in round 4

PS - Round 1 - trade down and take OT Okung or CB Haden

We don't have that kind of money to get both Rolle and Peppers... and I'm afraid we're stuck with this #2 overall pick.

So, we have Calvin's contract, Stafford's contract, Rolle contract, Pepper's contract, Dorsey's contract, and our #2 this year's contract. Hell no that will NEVER happen because we'd have to sell Ford Field to afford all that.

Plus, SD is getting close to no offers for Cromartie and have said if they don't trade him, then they will release him. So knowing that, a 4th round draft pick is the highest I see on him at the moment, but I also don't see them trading him unless they get a RB in return. Kevin Smith for Cromartie is about right.

Not sure I'd offer Kevin Smith for Cormartie if he could be had with a 4th rounder.....rather just do that.

Ture, Peppers is just a pipe dream anyway - not going to happen. Would love to do the rest though....

Kevin Smith doesn't have the same value as where we drafted him. He is a 4th or 5th round value imo and if we are looking for a RB as much as wiretap says we are, I'd rather have that 4th round pick then Kevin Smith.

See, I'd rather have Smith over some 4th rounder....we just disagree I suppose. Plus, if we want another RB, why is it we'd also give up our starter?

That'd be like the Pistons, who need big men, tradin Ben Wallace for another SG....

I think it's more about whether you think Kevin Smith is a part of this teams future. PP might, but Bar doesn't. If he's not a part of the future, but not trade him for a player than can help, or at least expire after the season?

You think Dumars wouldn't trade Ben in a deal that would upgrade the team? Yes, he needs bigmen, but Ben's not going to be a Piston for long. He's gotta look long term. I think that's what alot of fan miss sometimes. The long term picture.
