now that's the reason why this board is still relevant despite our teams utter betrayal and mismanagement. there's just no other way id ever hear that. love it, much better (imo) than the original (a rare feat).

reminds me of

Amadou et Mariam - Dimanche A Bamako - live version and another Malian who some say represented the true roots of the blues Ali Farka Toure - Diaraby

I got curious about the deconstruction of old school hip hop classics, got interested in finding the samples that make 'em up. Fortunately there are music scholars who've already done all the work for me. But discovered new favorites in old classics, then enjoyed a good few hours live mixing off youtube clips, essentially 'scratching' by stop-starting youtube running on a couple open windows, essentially looping by replaying the same sample, old turntable style, nearly recreated 'Paid in Full' of just a few samples:

Principally: SalSoul Orchestra "Oooh I love it(Love Breaks)"

And the haunting opening chant from Yemeni singer Ofra Haza "Im Nin Alu".

Then looping the first 20 seconds or so of Gevurahby John Zorn's Masada sextet and mixing Ofra Haza on top of that.

I got to get a midi sampler.

oh man, that's just weird. that's the sound i was hearing that made me think of the malian music, since those guys are basically transferring the sound of the kora to the electric guitar and the kora is clearly the predecessor/inspiration of the gourd banjo he's playing. not the best link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JNl8kIwj1_k but it'll do to show what im talking about.

so, just to bring it full circle. the corries (scottish) - wild mountain thyme and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LeOTbTTmiCY and the dubliners (irish) mason's apron and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GR0UWSDf ... re=related.

[the scot in me demands to point out that those "irish" you're talking about were scots-irish :D ]

and because nobody sings the song of the defiant defeated futile underdog that has come to terms with their fate but sees no reason to accept it or declare it right that seemingly represents the district and all wizards fans like the scots-irish, Ye Jacobites By Name (your faults i will proclaim, your doctrines i blame)

Not a coincidence. Dom Flemons (on banjo in this clip) studied with Mike Seeger, and singer Rhiannon Giddens helped form Sankofa Strings, after traveling to africa. The three players in CCD met at the Black Banjo Gathering which gives a knowledgeable nod and respect to those very roots.

I heard there's a biopic in the works with James Franco playing JB. (the physical likeness is uncanny, but who knows how they'll handle the musical aspects.)

a lot of folks, maybe a lot of AfAmerican folks, are unaware of the african
roots of the banjo.

BTW - bluegrass and OT music are generally considered to be 2 different things.

Bluegrass music is a relatively recent genre having been invented in the middle
of the 20th Century not too long before R&R.

I bow to superior knowledge. I just like the way it sounds here. Or when done well in general.

not a banjo tune [edit - I didn't initially think there was a
banjo played in the video, didn't watch it long enough.
Saw Darrell Scott perform this song at the State Theatre
and he gave a tour de force rendition then, this here is
NOT video of that night]

but a song written about the history of the banjo, based
on old banjo/fiddle tune

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwBHG7Qs9Rs

Check out either of Bela Flecks 2 CDs called Tales from the Acoustic Planet

vol 1 is more jazz oriented
vol 2 is called the Bluegrass Sessions for obvious reasons.

Found this on YouTube when I was looking for something else:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ae47phOq ... L&index=20

I used to have the entire set of 33 1/3 LPs when I was a kid. Can't believe I threw them away! I'm on Ebay now looking for them. I don't want the CD, I want the originaly vinyls.

That video is pretty awesome.

What are the chances they perform that live at the VMA's like they did the treadmill video a few years back?
