Finley to be released

Post#1 » by Nolan » Mon Mar 1, 2010 6:38 pm

Just filed to ESPN.com: Spurs agree to release former All-Star and Stein Line fave Michael Finley so Fin can sign elsewhere before playoffs

This is from Marc Stein's twitter.

I'm not a big fan of Finley, but i'm suprised we're releasing him and I really don't get it. I guess this means more minutes for Malik?

Bulls are talking buyout with Devin Brown. He could be the guy that takes Finley's roster spot.

Larry Hughes is another possibility. Word is he's not going to the Bobcats.

I like Devin Brown, I'd be happy if we sign him. I was just thinking how he's had two stints with the Hornets and he might do the same with us the other day and now that we drop Finley, Devin is definitely a good option. It looked like they never tried to work him in the rotation in Chicago. I believe he can fit in our system pretty quickly, plus he can help Mason with the ball handling.

OK, now that I'm thinking about it, two FAs that really interest me are Von Wafer and Rashad McCants. Any one of these two would also make me happy.

What's the scoop on Finley, is he done? Has his play noticeably decreased from last year?

He's not done, he's pretty much the same player he's been for the last couple seasons.

I'd be thrilled with Devin Brown. Good shooter, decent defender and just an all around versitile player.

We already have a similar player in Mason Jr. This could also be a move to free up more minutes for him as well.

I liked Finley with you guys, and I'm not quite sure why they released him. Does he think the Spurs aren't a threat in the Western Conference anymore? Was he getting less playing time this year?

We're either freeing up minutes for Mason and Malik or we're going after someone else, my guess being Devin Brown.

I don't know who's out there, but man we need a SF. Or atleas someone with a SF size. We can't have a team full of SGs. Bogans, Manu, Mason, Hill are all too short to play SF. I think we look for a SF, not a SG even thou I like Devin Brown more than Roger Mason or Keith Bogans.

Fin's going back to Dallas IMO.

My question is why he left. Is he losing hope? Is it just about playing time? Is he looking for a title? I don't think he'll get both playing time and title. If he wants to get a title, going to Dallas, LA, or Cavs, or Boston won't get him playing time. While going to a team short on G/Fs on a middle playoff team won't get him a title. So what's he looking for?

Ya I don't get it either. Maybe it had something to do with his family?

Well, Pop mentioned it's more about playing time.

Just finished looking at FA guys, there's some that I like but don't really know how in shape are they since they're not on NBA teams this season.

Wally Z got great size at SF and even played some PF for Cleveland last year. Looking at how Jefferson and Bowen gets a lot of open jumpers, Wally's shooting from that position can be very useful.

or Ruben Patterson. The self annointed Kobe Stopper is a tough defensive player and is a very good inside scorer. In Milwaukee, he's played very well as a part time PF and is a true SF. IMO, tougher defensively than any of our current perimeter players. He'd be a better "Bowen" than Bogans.

Honestly thou, I'd be super happy if we bring back Horry and Bowen. It's playoff time.

Boston has plenty of playing time for Finley, he'll fit in quite nicely with the rest of are old guys; im assuming that the spurs wouldnt buy him out and let him go to another western conference contender, so i guess it would make the most sense if he ended up in boston; cleveland could somewhat use him too, but im really hoping its boston

We can't bring back Horry. He was done two years ago, it pains me to think how useless he would be now.

Apparently Fin got the first DNP-CD of his career recently, and maybe reality stung a bit. He's still got something left in the tank for one last playoff run. He must've just thought we weren't the best team to do that with. I believe he's still owed $600K on this deal.

I don't see how Finley fits in with Boston. Players wise maybe he fits in, but not in terms of playing time. Fin right now is not a better player than Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, Marquis Daniels, and even Tony Allen.

I don't see how Fin gets playing time in Cleveland too. Lebron plays 40 minutes at the SF position. There's Jamario Moon backing him up. Delonte West, Gibson, and Anthony Parker are all better than Finley and plays the SG position.

Every Spurs fans know that Finley was done last year. It's why we got somewhat annoyed with Pop's insistence on playing Finley. I'd be very surprised if Finley goes somewhere and end up getting regular playing time for one of the league's top 5 teams in the playoffs.
