Hypothetical NBA All Stars vs WNBA all star game

Post#1 » by Roger Murdock » Tue Mar 2, 2010 12:20 am

Lets say you are in a situation where you have to pick a starting 5 of NBA players to play against the best players the WNBA has to offer. The rules of the game are that you and each of the 5 players you pick die if they dont win the game by over 200 points, to ensure that everyone on the team plays their hardest for all 48 minutes. Played by nba rules.

Who are the 5 players you pick and why? Do you think they would win by 200 or not? Keep in mind the WNBA team is playing by the same rules and needs to lose by less than 200 to live so they are playing their hardest too.

I would pick players to dominate then with size, speed, strength, and stamina rather than skill. I would go for the most athletic team. One that can aggressively steal the ball, run the court, play above the rim, and break their woman down on the dribble. Jump shooting would be discourage because its too low a % shot. I also wouldnt want it to be possible for the WNBA team to grab a rebound. Its optimal if all my players can block their shots without jumping.

I would pick a lineup of Paul, Wade, LeBron, Gerald Wallace, and Dwight. I think they could pull it off.

What about you guys?

You're going to have a big strength advantage anyway, and you're going to need to pressure the ball. I might go even smaller.

i feel the opposite id just dominate with superior size and athleticism

PG:Deron
SG:Lebron
SF:Wallace
PF:Bosh
C:Dwight

we'd pick up as many offensive boards as necessary to score every time down the floor

I like the idea of having a really big fast guy to pressure the inbounds every play. I think the WNBA team would easily have more turnovers than FGA. Having a 6-11 dwight in the face of the inbounds passer with the best ball thief's in the league behind him sounds good to me. I see intercepted inbound passes with the guy who catches it turning and tossing an ooop for dwight as he throws down a facial over whichever woman tries to stop him.

Female players are often underrated from a skills standpoint, but if the game is this serious I can see screens and hard fouls eliminating a lot of the women players pretty quickly.

I totally agree with the skills point you bring up. Its basically a question of skill vs skill + incredible athleticism.

Wade
Kobe
Carmelo
Lebron
Dwight

I think that team would just punish the WNBA team with their size and strength. They could literally just let Dwight Howard stand under the basket and throw alley oops to him the whole game.

They die if they don't win by 200?

PG Allen Iverson
SG Nate Robinson
SF Kobe Bryant
PF Adam Morrison
C Rasheed Wallace

Final score: 212-18

PG: Rose
SG: Rondo
SF: Westbrook
PF: Iguodala
C: Lebron

I think the key is making every play a fastbreak, and picking off like 90% of their inbound passes. I don't think the WNBA team will ever shoot the ball. Their plan will be to dribble it as long as possible. So every time they got it in I'd foul them. I'd rather give them the 2 points instead of wasting 20 seconds or whatever.

If I score 110 times to get 220 points, 10% of that is 11 times, if they score at an 80% clip from the FT line that's 18 points. That's fine. The key is picking off their inbounds passes THAT much

Yeah, you have to play very aggressively to steal, rather than just shut them down, since if you let them dribble out 24 seconds each time, even if you spend only only 6 seconds on each of your possessions, that's only 96 possessions, clearly not enough to win by 200. I think it will be very tough, because you simply don't have enough time, and if you ever do foul, that's just more points you need to score in a limited amount of time, because one thing women can do is shoot free throws.

LeBron by himself could beat the WNBA start 1 on 5. Seriously. He'd dunk it on every possession.

each of the 5 players you pick die if they dont win the game by over 200 points

PG: Nash
SG: Kobe
SF: LeBron
PF: Dwight
C: Bogut

Reasoning (non homer): Taking outside shots in this game would be beyond pointless. You'd just want guys who score inside. Dwight and Bogut are probably the two best C's in the league at the moment, and definitely the two best shot blockers... LeBron is LeBron, Kobe is a great post-up player and Nash would find anyone who was remotely open.

Second team:

PG: Deron
SG: Durant
SF: Gerald Wallace
PF: Josh Smith
C: Andrew Bynum

They'd have a harder time scoring the 200+ points than that first team but they'd probably stop them from scoring on nearly every possession.

Am I the only one that thinks it is IMPOSSIBLE for the NBA players to win by 200 points. They need to outscore the WNBA players by 50 every 12 minutes. Not that easy considering WNBA players aren't that bad.

Rajon Rondo
Monta Ellis
Dwayne Wade
Josh Smith
Lebron James

The key is quick guys who can get steals and finish, outside shooting is pretty worthless, and you don't need 7 footers, because you want to score before they will even get up the court, and women are short anyway.
