Another Leafs trade before the deadline!

Out: Ponikarovsky

In: Luca Caputi, Martin Skoula

Even though the Leafs have been horrible for the past few years, this has been at least an interesting season.

Caputi is a 4th round draft pick that's only played a handful of games, but has scoring potential while Skoula is a half decent defenseman, something the Leafs have been historically bad with.

For a team that has been bad for the past million years this is a fairly good trade to get someone younger to develop. It seems like they're going that direction which is kind of refreshing, since Toronto used to be a retirement haven for old, washed up players.

His max potential is becoming a Poni type player. A very meh thread IMO.

A "meh" trade? Poni was a UFA. Burke basically got a young player who might be decent enough to be a legitimate 2nd line player + a late round pick out of it.

Ontop of that, he cleared enough salary to take on another contract.

What more could you seriously expect? It reminds me of how people wanted gold bullion for Antropov.

I really truly believe this year has been a waste for the Leafs with the exception of getting Dion Phaneuf.

While it stands right now, the Leafs have 1 top 6 forward, and I'm not a huge fan of Kessel anyways. They have a pretty good D core when Komisarek gets back next year, and really, their goaltending is passable.

All of the success of the Leafs depends on getting about 3-5 top 6 forwards to play with Kessel. Kadri, Hanson, Stalberg and Bozak are still not ready for huge time. Maybe 3/4 could play on the third line next year.

The Poni deal is fine by me, I much prefer this over getting two draft picks in a supposedly weak draft after the top 3.
